Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the leadership behaviors of the Catholic elementary school principal shaped the culture of the school in support of novice teachers. When principals ensure that their schools are filled with good teachers, they help to raise the achievement level of the students. However, becoming a good teacher takes time and support. Novice teachers need support if they are to become effective practitioners. Through their leadership behaviors, Catholic elementary school principals can provide necessary supports for novice teachers. It is vital that Catholic elementary school principals understand how their leadership behaviors impact novice teachers. This research study employed a quantitative method which utilized a web-based self-administered survey. Data were obtained from 74 novice teachers in the nine Catholic Diocese of: the Archdiocese of Boston, the Archdiocese of Kansas City, the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the Archdiocese of Seattle, the Diocese of Austin, the Diocese of Des Moines, the Diocese of Fort Worth-South Bend, the Diocese of Jackson, and the Diocese of Phoenix. The survey instrument, The Catholic Elementary School Novice Teacher Survey, elicited demographic information, and provided data on the relationship focused and task focused leadership behaviors of the principal from the novice teacher's prospective. A Pearson product correlation coefficient and two-way analysis of variance were used for data analysis. The most important finding of this research study is that the leadership behaviors of the Catholic elementary school principal do shape the culture of the school in support of novice teachers. Both relationship focused leadership behaviors and task focused leadership behaviors were shown to positively impact the culture of the school in support of novice teachers. However, novice teachers' perceived relationship focused leadership behaviors of the principal to provide a higher level of support. It is important that principals understand their leadership behaviors in order to provide the necessary support for the development of the novice teachers in their school buildings.

Book excerpt: The administration of Pre K – 12 Catholic schools becomes more challenging each year. Catholic school leaders not only have the daunting task of leading a successful learning organization, but also to serve as the school community’s spiritual leader and the vigilant steward who keeps the budget balanced, the building clean, and maintaining a healthy enrollment in the school. Each of these tasks can be a full time job, yet the Catholic school principal takes on these tasks day after day, year after year, so that teachers may teach as Jesus did. The goal of this book is to provide both beginning and seasoned Catholic school leaders with some insights that might help them to meet these challenges with a sense of confidence. The words in this text provide research?based approaches for dealing with issues of practice, especially those tasks that are not ordinarily taught in educational leadership programs. This text helps to make sense of the pastoral side of Catholic education, in terms of structures, mission, identity, curriculum, and relationships with the principal’s varied constituencies. It also provides some insights into enrollment management issues, finances and development, and the day in day out care of the organization and its home, the school building. As a Catholic school leader, each must remember that the Catholic school is not just another educational option. The Catholic school has a rich history and an important mission. Historically, education of the young goes back to the monastic and cathedral schools of the Middle Ages. In the United States, Catholic schools developed as a response to anti?Catholic bias that was rampant during the nineteenth century. Catholic schools developed to move their immigrant and first generation American youth from the Catholic ghetto to successful careers and lives in the American mainstream. However, most importantly, Catholic schools have brought Christ to generations of youngsters. It remains the continuing call of the Catholic school to be a center of Evangelization—a place where Gospel values live in the lives of faculty, students and parents. This text attempts to integrate the unique challenges of the instructional leader of the institution with the historical and theological underpinnings of contemporary Catholic education.

"The Daily Practices of Successful Principals" goes beyond the outward picture of excellence and provides a compendium of daily practices used by successful principals in various settings. Written by former administrators who have walked in your shoes, this handy guide's strategies are based on interviews with successful leaders and are applicable in multiple contexts. Book excerpt: This study explored the predictive nature of the relationship between lay Catholic elementary school principals' professional experiences in Catholic and public schools, demographic information, school demographics, religious formation, and spirituality on the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. Spiritual leadership was conceptualized using Ciriello's (1994) spiritual leadership framework and the behaviors of spiritual leadership were more fully defined using Catholic Church writings and Catholic educational research that describes the responsibilities of spiritual leadership (Barry and Brennan, 2008, Belmonte and Cranston, 2009; Campbell, 2000; Cook, 2001; Curran, 1996; Helm, 1989; Jacobs, 1996, McDermott, 1997; Miller, 2006; Muccigrosso, 1994, Robinson and Cirello, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c, 1994d). Data for this national study came from anonymous surveys responded to by 253 lay Catholic elementary school principals. Principals were invited to participate using a purposeful representative sampling to ensure inclusion of principals from the eight regions represented on National Catholic Educational Association's board. The Catholic Elementary School Principals' Spiritual Leadership Survey (CESPSL) used in this study was developed by the researcher. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Q-Q plots, a series of one-way, between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA), linear regression and stepwise regression analyses. The results of these analyses revealed no significant correlation between the combined years of experience a lay Catholic school principal has in Catholic schools, as a teacher and principal, and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. However, Catholic school experience was found to be predictive of the frequency of principal's spiritual leadership behaviors when their experience in Catholic schools was limited to only those years they served as a principal in their current Catholic school. This study did not find any correlation between the combined years of experience a principal had in public schools prior to their employment as a Catholic elementary school principal and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. This study did find nine demographic, religious formation and spirituality factors that were predictive of the frequency of lay Catholic elementary school principals' spiritual leadership behaviors. These factors include: the principal's age, catechetical certification, ongoing adult religious education, participation in Church Sacraments, support for Catholic Church teachings, participation in the cultural life of a Catholic parish, feeling close to God, daily prayer, and the practice of reflection and contemplation. It is hoped that the results of this study provide diocesan leaders and Catholic colleges and universities with a better understanding of the combination of factors that are correlated with the frequency of principals' spiritual leadership behaviors and that this understanding will help inform decisions that are made regarding the preparation, hiring and ongoing formation of lay Catholic elementary schools principals as spiritual leaders. Recommendations for future research suggest new ways to gain additional insights into the complex relationship between the lay Catholic school principal's professional school experiences, demographic information, religious formation, and spirituality factors and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors as Catholic elementary school principals.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Effective leadership behaviors are imperative in contributing to student achievement and the overall culture of a school. School leaders must mold the culture of the school in order to create an environment which is conducive to learning. Studies on school leadership and student achievement have highlighted the evidence of school leadership behaviors which contribute to student achievement. The purpose of this investigation studied the extent of school leadership behaviors and or characteristics that contribute to student achievement. This study was designed to identify the relationship between the behaviors of the school leader and student achievement. The study determined if teachers and principals perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. More specifically, this investigation was designed to study the behaviors and practices of elementary principals as it relates to student achievement in elementary school students in a large urban school district. Sixty-three elementary teachers and six principals were selected for this study. The six principals were apart of the focus group interview. Data was collected through teacher and principal surveys, audio-taped interviews and transcriptions. SPSS 13.0 was selected as a means to interpret and analyze data. 2 The results of the study support the literature and indicate that principal leadership is critical to student achievement in elementary school students. More specifically, it raised the question about what specific leadership behaviors are used to increase student achievement. This study further clarified that the principal is the primary person for instituting leadership among all within the school which ultimately contribute to student success. The elementary principal has a demanding and challenging job in and of itself, but by recognizing the leadership behaviors, the principal can influence the climate, productivity, effectiveness of their school and ultimately student achievement.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a succinct up-to-date summary of global research on principal instructional leadership as it has evolved over the past 50 years. The book’s particular focus is on the development and use of the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS). The PIMRS is the most widely used survey instrument designed for assessing instructional leadership for research and practice. It has been used in more than 250 studies in more than 30 countries around the world. The authors provide a detailed conceptual and data-based description of the rationale and development of the instrument as well as the ways in which it has been used in practice. The book also provides, for the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the scale’s measurement properties. This represents essential information for future users of the instrument across different national contexts. Finally, the volume outlines an agenda for improving future research on the role of principal instructional leadership in student learning and school effectiveness.

But what if there was a way to teach children how to manage priorities, focus on goals and be a positive influence on the world around them? The Leader in Meis that programme. It's based on a hugely successful initiative carried out at the A.B. Combs Elementary School in North Carolina. To hear the parents of A. B Combs talk about the school is to be amazed. In 1999, the school debuted a programme that taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleto a pilot group of students. The parents reported an incredible change in their children, who blossomed under the programme. By the end of the following year the average end-of-grade scores had leapt from 84 to 94. This book will launch the message onto a much larger platform. Stephen R. Covey takes the 7 Habits, that have already changed the lives of millions of people, and shows how children can use them as they develop. Those habits -- be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw -- are critical skills to learn at a young age and bring incredible results, proving that it's never too early to teach someone how to live well.
