Book excerpt: Current knowledge in the field of educational administration has emphasized the role of technology and how it can assist teachers to increase student academic achievement, but there lacks in popularity a familiar and academically-focused framework suitable for principals to assist teachers in their professional role. This research utilized the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale by Hallinger to (1) identify teachers' demographics, and (2) their perception towards the quality of principal leadership in order to (3) compare these perceptions to teachers' demographic factors, so that a determination might be considered on what areas lack development and what measures could be taken to strengthen them. This study measured teachers' demographics according to age, gender, years of work experience with their principal, as well as the total years of teaching experience at a private Thai high school. The results illustrated that many of the job-functions have a direct impact on others, while the principal's physical presence is key to Developing the School Learning Climate Program, Managing the Instructional Program, and Defining the School Mission. In particular, younger teachers believed their principal to be underperforming and lacking observable leadership skills. The implications demonstrated that the majority of all the ten principal job-functions were comparatively lower than previous studies completed in Western jurisdictions. Since the findings have contributed to the understanding of principal instructional leadership by establishing the negative implications it can have on overall institutional practice.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine task-oriented and socially-oriented leadership patterns in public secondary school directors in Bangkok Metropolis, Thailand. This analysis was conducted to determine if leadership orientation as well as gender-based leadership behaviours were related to school climate. Surveys, questionnaires and interviews were used to obtain data from directors and teachers. Utilisation of cross case study research analysis and qualitative data indicated that gender based leadership traits, rather than administrator gender, appeared to be associated with school climate. This research suggests that an effective instructional leader, at the secondary level, is fundamental to the teaching and learning process. Quality educational leadership promotes positive school climates for teacher satisfaction and student achievement. Research studies have focused upon possible determinants for school climates.

Book excerpt: This study examined the practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership among principals in Islamic private secondary schools in Narathiwat, Thailand. An attempt was also made to explore teachers' perception of the practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership among principals in Narathiwat. To achieve these purposes, a questionnaire was specifically designed to get information from the respondents who were teachers. The descriptive analysis method was employed to describe the teachers' perception regarding practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership. A questionnaire, using Five Point Likert Scale, was used as the instrument to collect the data. The sample of this study was randomly selected. A total of 302 respondents from 10 schools, consisting of 94 male and 208 female teachers were selected for this study. Percentages, means, standard deviations, t-test and Anova were computed for research questions. The analysis revealed that the teachers' perception towards principals' practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership in Islamic private secondary schools in Narathiwat generally appear to be positive. The findings also indicated that the teachers' perception showed a non-statistical significant difference based on gender, qualification and years of teaching experience. However, the finding showed a statistical relationship between the principals' practice and effectiveness. Finally, the study provided recommendations on how to improve the practice of distributed leadership practice in schools and suggested interesting further researches.
