Book excerpt: The Failure of Leadership in Africa’s Development examines the dominant scholarly theories about the cause of Africa’s underdevelopment and argues that none of the traditionally invoked causes—an alleged black racial inferiority, the colonial and neo-colonial expropriation of Africa, purported natural defects in Africa’s geography—is plausible as the explanation of the main cause of the continent’s underdevelopment. Rather, the book argues that the chief cause of the continent’s lag is the failure of leadership of Africa’s ruling classes. This failure of leadership, the book shows, is most evident in the historically traceable indifference of a long succession of Africa’s ruling classes to the scientific and technological advances that were emerging from Europe and Asia during the most critical periods of Africa’s history. It was this indifference, the book argues, that set the stage for the subsequent conquest, expropriation, and technological stagnation of Africa. The book recommends a blueprint for the continent’s future development.

Knowledge of the culture helps shape the strategies that would convince people to buy-in and reduce resistance and weaken opposition attitudes. A leader must govern with moral purpose on all his/her actions or initiatives. He/she cannot tolerate social vices such as stealing the community's money, embezzling money from the people's business, behaving as political gangsters, displaying indifferent attitudes in face of calamities, and ignoring people's misery. A good leader is someone who strives to work for the betterment of his community. He/she is someone who helps everyone to succeed. He/she is the guarantor of the people's security and hope for the better. Any political leader, any organizational leader who neglects the importance of the culture would cause chaos that would lead the country or the organization to its demise, sadly. The relentlessness to quick enrichment from embezzling the country natural resources, squandering its assets through stingy abominable deals depriving the country from its economic and financial means is clearly the curse to the country development. Again, a leader must live with a moral purpose. He must be the embodiment of a decent model of live to the people he is in charge of or the organization he oversees. His first and utmost responsibility should be the welfare of the people and not his own quick enrichment. Some African leaders should consider going back to the traditional African model of leadership, adapting it to the world's everchanging events and realities. This book is to remind African leaders the meaning of leadership.

Such challenges as dependency, corruption, underdeveloped infrastructure and production sectors, leadership and governance, etc are some of the impediments to Africa's quest for sustainable and equitable development. Explaining such development challenges has continued to elude scholars. To the radical leftist scholars, Africa's underdevelopment can adequately be explained by its forceful and uneven integration into the global economic system. However, with over fifty years of independence, the debate is increasingly focusing on Africa's leadership as good explanation for its poverty and underdevelopment. This paper argues that the current poverty and underdevelopment of Africa have much to do with enabling conditions created by African leaders and that addressing this requires Africans to go back to pre-colonial history where they can draw good lessons rather than continuing importing Western based models which may not necessarily fit into Africa's unique characteristics.

Okocha Leadership and Development Crises in Africa: A New Approach to an Old Challenge is a book written to unearth the immediate and remote causes of the problems in Africa’s political and economic landscape. It asks and tries to answer these two critical questions: Why do we experience bad leadership and why is there a very low level of economic development in Africa? It uncovers the various internally generated, as well as externally exerted, challenges that have kept Africa in its current state of instability and underdevelopment, and proffers an incredible solution in a simple and pragmatic manner. This book presents and represents a veritable tool for the African Union in its responsibility of repositioning the African continent for greater global relevance. It is a must-read for the political class in all nations of Africa and around the world, scholars of History and Political Science, and all those who are genuinely involved in the struggle for the enthronement of good governance in a continent that is often characterized by hunger, disease, instability, and hopelessness. It is the foundation for a new order in Africa’s political leadership and economic development.

Analysing empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, the author evaluates the role of leaders in the failure of African globalisation and seeks to propose an initiative for change. As emphasis shifts from world control to regional and sub-regional control, the new face of globalisation offers an opportunity for Africa to grow and develop with a new leadership perspective. Presenting servant leadership as a solution to Africa’s global failures, this timely book explores the challenges of governance, resource management and regionalisation, and will be of value to anyone interested in the development of Africa as a continent.

Book excerpt: Development Communication and Leadership in Africa serves as a standard textbook, a reference guide, a repository, and a resource platform for graduate and undergraduate students in colleges and universities where relevant discussions on development are held. The purpose of this textbook is not to discount the continued negative effects of imperialism and neo-colonialism, but to readily understand that for Africa to reverse the pendulum of underdevelopment, there is an urgent need for leaders to take responsibility for their actions. From the understanding of the arguments presented in this textbook, the development of Africa should be futuristic in nature and must address issues that affect the people from the grassroots level, sensitize citizens as to what development means, reduce poverty, and increase healthy living and affordable healthcare platforms along with nutrition, career opportunities, jobs, and most importantly, education and income-earning opportunities for every citizen. This textbook, in its twenty chapters, frowns on poor leadership in the fifty-four countries of Africa and enthusiastically calls for the development of an authentic ideology that is pragmatic in outlook, and will assist both leaders and ordinary citizens to further development agendas that would consolidate Africa's freedom and independence. This ideology must address challenges such as the connection between poor leadership and underdevelopment, class identity, peace and insecurity, corruption and poor governance, income inequality, impoverishment, and the lack of patriotism. As a result of not completing all these prerequisites for development, Africa has continued to fail the test of the comity of nations. This textbook addresses relevant issues that call for every citizen in Africa to rise to the occasion and foster a social identity that will create a common social enclave where Africans not only belong, but also participate with its diverse entity as a formidable characteristic for its development.

Book excerpt: Leaders of the African liberation movements proclaimed ambitious objectives and promised swift dismantling of colonial policies and practices. It was believed that poverty and underdevelopment were consequences of the exploitative policies of the colonial masters, who had no interest in improving living conditions for local communities. Independence and freedom were anticipated to eradicate poverty, ignorance and disease, and the new leadership would accelerate economic development and prosperity. However, after more than 50 years of independence, most African countries are still poor and underdeveloped and this poses a few questions: Have African leaders abandoned their ambitions? Are African challenges more complex than in other regions? Has the political leadership failed to rise to the challenge? In his relentless pursuit of African excellence and development, Professor Lumkile Wiseman Nkuhlu offers profound insights and solutions to the challenges Africa has faced and continues to encounter. He wrestles with the vexing question of how a continent with such a rich history and heritage, as well as potential, remains an underperforming region of the world and offers insights into potential pathways and strategies for breaking free from the vicious cycle of underdevelopment. Africa can become the world's production powerhouse in the second half of this century, provided that intentional and purposeful leadership emerges. Purposeful Leadership for Africa in the 21st Century delves into the leadership strategies, qualities and policies needed for an African renewal, aiming to reposition the continent as a strategic and competitive global player.

Book excerpt: This book outlines perspectives of emerging and established African scholars on what one could describe as the debate on leadership and the articulation of the life of the mind in Africa's socio-economic, political and cultural life from the time of independence to date. The papers contained in the book cover the following thematic areas: Alternative Leadership Paradigm for Africa's Advancement; African Perspectives on Globalisation and international relations; Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance; Scientific, Technological and Cultural Dimensions of African Development. The first section deals with alternative leadership paradigms for Africa's advancement. It also debates the 'thin line' separating management studies from leadership studies and untangles the hermeneutic complexities in the term 'leadership'. Section two examines among other things, the crucial challenge of globalisation and public ethics and others African perspectives. The section also interrogates the current complexities and credibility deficits in the global governance of trade and towards the end engages philosophical questions about conscience and consciousness in African development and progress. The debates in section three continue to section four and focus on the overall issues of language and liberation, the significance of Multi-, Inter and Trans-Disciplinary Approaches in the analysis of the African continent, appropriate indigenous paradigms for promoting the African renaissance as well as a series of debates on the meaning and prospects of regional integration in Africa's renewal. This provides just a snapshot of a very wide ranging and interesting debate contained in the publication.
