Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of Christ Jesus in the Church of the Living God: A Charge N o thoughtful observer can fail to see underlying our extremes of individualism an honesty and a de sire to apprehend the truth that is reassuring. But this comfortable assurance cannot justify an atti tude of quiescence on the part of those of us who are set over the Church as leaders, and who may not substitute mere personal influence for active and practical government. It is the creed of pessimism to leave things alone. Every man who by virtue of his vocation is called upon to guide others must make his contribution of thought and effort with generosity to those who differ, but also with clear ness and firmness. Download or read book The Catholic Faith in Practice written by Francis Underhill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Faith in Practice: In English Parishes It might have been thought that a method which in general outline has been worked with such excellent results throughout the great body of the Catholic Church would have been accepted by the leaders of the English Church without the opposition with which the Catholic Revival has been almost every where met. It is indeed true that if the method of working out of the Catholic Revival in all its implications is a circumstance which ought to cause trembling, then there are good grounds for fear for there is no doubt whatever that the movement is making ground everywhere, among clergy and lay people alike. It is being found highly effective, and the need for a living religion which has been brought home to us by the War is making its suppression an impossibility. Download or read book Alexander Campbell written by Thomas W. Grafton and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Campbell: Leader of the Great Reformation of the Nineteenth Century Such a heritage the young people of our Endeavor Socie ties have in the leaders of the religious movement which, in the early part of this century, led to the establishment of the Christian Church. Though the history of that move ment does not yet Span a century, no religious body has a richer calendar of saints than we. Many of them may have been lacking in the conventional graces of society, and in high scholastic attainments; but in the genuineness of their sympathies and in their familiarity with God's two great books - nature and the Bible - all were, in the highest and truest sense, gentlemen and scholars. First among these worthies must ever be placed that grand man, to whose faith, originality and genius our relig ious movement owes its origin, Alexander Campbell, the Sage of Bethany. To bring the story of his life within a compass that would enable busy people to become acquaint ed with him, has been the end sought in this volume. With a literature so rich in material, this has been no small task. The sixty volumes which grew up under the genius of Mr. Campbell, including the Christian Baptist and Millen nial Harbinger, are rich in biographical suggestion. In addition to these the author is indebted to Dr. Richardson's valuable Memoirs. All he claims is to have gathered, from these sources, the most important events in this great life, and to have compressed them within a space that may encourage every lover of truth to sit, for a season, at the feet of one of its most earnest defenders. Book Synopsis Great Men of the Christian Church by : Williston Walker
Download or read book Great Men of the Christian Church written by Williston Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Men of the Christian Church This brief series of biographies is designed for the reader or student without technical training in church history. For this reason considerable attention has been paid to the general condition of the church or of religious thought in the periods in which the leaders here described did their work, in order that the reader may appreciate their relations to their times. The number of biographies might well have been increased and the selection may easily be criticized; but the writer believes that none have been chosen who were not really representative men, and his aim has been to illustrate the manifold variety of Christian service, life, and experience. In mentioning additional reading the aim has been to present a few only of the most accessible works in the English language. Questions have been appended to facilitate review or to aid possible instructors who have made no special study of church history. Download or read book The Life and Times of Bishop (Classic Reprint) written by Julius H. Ward and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Bishop The career of Bishop White involves the history of the first half century of the American Episcopal Church. He was its first Bishop in the English line, and to him for fifty years fell the duty of guiding its growth and presiding over its councils. When he died in 1836, he was so well known that it was not thought necessary to write a biography in detail, and Dr. Wilson's Memoir is the only attempt that has been made to set forth his individual career. Bishop Perry has rendered invaluable service in gathering up and putting into print the documentary ecclesiastical history of the period; but, so far as I know, this is the first attempt that has been made to give a personal portrait of this great Church leader, and to show what part he had in the civil and religious life of the times in which he lived. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Democracy Its Promises and Perils Political power in the United Kingdom belongs to that portion of the population which contributes less than one-fourth of the total Imperial and local revenues, while the remainder contribute over three-fourths of the revenue, supply eleven-twelfths of the men who govern the Empire, and draw ninety-nine per cent. of the prizes of public life. Virtually a Republic with an hereditary President, Great Britain lacks a written Constitution embodying the fundamental principles of liberty, life, and ownership. The only existing safe-guard against despotism - other than the racial common sense of the English people - is a fragment of feudalism that has floated down from the Middle Ages to the edge of the Twentieth Century in the shape of an hereditary House, invested with legal power to oppose the will of an omnipotent, but never unanimous, proletariat.
