Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of the Reformation: Luther, Calvin, Latimer, Knox, the Representative Men of Germany, France, England and Scotland The substance of these sketches was delivered in a series of Lectures at the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution during the past spring. I mention this not to excuse their publication, which I had designed from the first, but to account for a rapidity and summariness of statement, and certain oral peculiarities of style, which will be sufficiently obvious here and there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Campbell: Leader of the Great Reformation of the Nineteenth Century Such a heritage the young people of our Endeavor Socie ties have in the leaders of the religious movement which, in the early part of this century, led to the establishment of the Christian Church. Though the history of that move ment does not yet Span a century, no religious body has a richer calendar of saints than we. Many of them may have been lacking in the conventional graces of society, and in high scholastic attainments; but in the genuineness of their sympathies and in their familiarity with God's two great books - nature and the Bible - all were, in the highest and truest sense, gentlemen and scholars. First among these worthies must ever be placed that grand man, to whose faith, originality and genius our relig ious movement owes its origin, Alexander Campbell, the Sage of Bethany. To bring the story of his life within a compass that would enable busy people to become acquaint ed with him, has been the end sought in this volume. With a literature so rich in material, this has been no small task. The sixty volumes which grew up under the genius of Mr. Campbell, including the Christian Baptist and Millen nial Harbinger, are rich in biographical suggestion. In addition to these the author is indebted to Dr. Richardson's valuable Memoirs. All he claims is to have gathered, from these sources, the most important events in this great life, and to have compressed them within a space that may encourage every lover of truth to sit, for a season, at the feet of one of its most earnest defenders. Book excerpt: Please Note: This book has been reprinted many times. This particular reprint has been carefully re-formatted, edited and has footnotes. THE REFORMATION of the Sixteenth Century is the principal source of our civil and religious freedom. We are living in the era which it inaugurated, and are moulded by its influence. For this reason, it deserves to be studied by all who are interested in the development of the Church and State. The author has not ventured to write a history of this eventful period. He has, however, made it the subject of many lectures, and of these a series is here presented. Though the best authorities have been consulted and freely quoted, the general purpose has been popular rather than scholastic. Of the work of the most distinguished leaders of the Reformation no more than a brief sketch has been attempted; but men of less celebrity have been assigned to the position which is believed to be their due. There has been no disposition to exalt some men at the expense of others, and that subjects of controversy have not been prominently presented. Good book to give one a foundation for Reformation studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Reformation: Its Epochs, Episodes, Leaders and Distinctive Characteristics Few men have shown more indomitable applica tion to an arduous duty, amid physical weakness and bodily pain, than did the author of these Lectures in their preparation and revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Reformers of the Reformed and Presbyterian Churches: A Mission Study Manual on the Reformation And if truth is never more potent than when it is seen incarnated in human life, surely the study of the great Reformers of the sixteenth century - the leaders in that wondrous anabasis that brought the Church out of her medieval tutelage into the spacious liberties of the modern era - will ever be an effective means for the deepening and enriching of our conception of what Christianity is and what it may become. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformers; And the Theology of the Reformation IN introducing the present volume to the Public, the Editors feel that a few words of explanation may be desirable, in regard to the trust assigned to them, and the manner in which they have, in so far, attempted to discharge it. In the interview which, at Dr Cunningham's request, they had with him within a few hours of his death, he committed to them the charge of his whole writings and manuscripts connected with the College, to be deposited in the Library, and to be used and applied to any purpose they judged right; stating, that he gave them absolute power to do in the matter as they considered to be best for his character, and the good of the Church. The charge thus verbally intrusted to them was formally and legally confirmed by the Trustees acting under Dr Cunningham's settlement; so that the Editors became invested with the character of his Literary Executors, and with the full powers and responsibilities attaching to such an office. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection of the Most Celebrated Sermons of John Calvin: Minister of the Gospel, and One of the Principal Leaders in the Protestant Reformation; To Which Is Prefixed a Biographical History of His Life In the midst of his various employments, our re former was a diligent student of the Holy Scrip tures. He was so diligent at this time, that after having supped lightly, he continued reading until midnight; and in the morning was employed, while in bed, in reviewing what he had read the night before. Although these late studies contributed to his extensive erudition, and his remarkable memory, yet they injured his health materially, and brought on that weakness of stomach with which he was afflicted during his life, and which at length short ened his days.
