On the African savannah they partnered with the Chokwe-Lunda who taught them language, culture and proverbs, which Ben used to explain salvation. Helen delivered the leprosy cure, mothered orphans, cared for the excluded, sick and poor. Their partners helped establish 80 churches, translate the Bible and run 24 clinics. They deepened their faith in spiritual battle against sorcery and corruption. The Eidses sought to empower the powerless and raise a family despite revolution, disease and disability. Book Synopsis Mennonites, Politics, and Peoplehood by : James Urry
Download or read book Mennonites, Politics, and Peoplehood written by James Urry and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mennonites and their forebears are usually thought to be a people with little interest or involvement in politics. Mennonites, Politics, and Peoplehood reveals that since their early history, Mennonites have, in fact, been active participants in worldly politics. From western to eastern Europe and through different migrations to North America, James Urry’s meticulous research traces Mennonite links with kingdoms, empires, republics, and democratic nations in the context of peace, war, and revolution. He stresses a degree of Mennonite involvement in politics not previously discussed in literature, including Mennonite participation in constitutional reform and party politics, and shows the polarization of their political views from conservatism to liberalism and even revolutionary activities. Urry looks at the Mennonite reaction to politics and political events from the Reformation onwards and focusses particularly on those people who settled in Russia and their descendants who came to Manitoba. Using a wide variety of sources, Mennonites, Politics, and Peoplehood combines an inter-disciplinary approach to reveal that Mennonites, far from being the “Quiet in the Land,” have deep roots in politics.

Book Synopsis From the Inside Out by : Royden Loewen
Download or read book From the Inside Out written by Royden Loewen and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 1999-10-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Royden Loewen has brought together selections from diaries kept by 21 Mennonites in Canada between 1863 and 1929, some translated from German for the first time. By skillfully comparing and contrasting a wide cross-section of lives, Loewen shows how these diaries often turn the hidden contours of household and community "inside out." The writers featured were ordinary rural people: young women and grandmothers, rural preachers and landless householders. They include a teenaged boy who immigrated from Russia to Manitoba in 1875 as well as a successful merchant, a traveling evangelist, and a devout, conservative church elder. An elderly grandfather recounted the daily circuit of his children's homes, while 19-year-old Marie Schoeder wrote of her literary aspirations, her "secret hope" that some day she would "write things that have a real worth, things that are worth printing, and things that other folks would love to read and pay for." From the Inside Out also contrasts diaries from two distinct Mennonite communities in Canada. The Swiss-American Mennonites in Waterloo County, Ontario, faced rapid urbanization, while the Dutch-Russian Mennonites in southern Manitoba maintained their more rural environment. The diaries mirror their writers' preoccupations with work and weather, but they also reveal a communityís social structure and round of activities such as weddings, funerals, and worship services. In the process of diary-keeping, the writers sought to make sense of a dynamic and often unpredictable world. Reading what they chose to record is to learn much about their culture. Their writings provide glimpses of their lives, their collective mindset, and their history as a people.

Book excerpt: "Mennonites are heirs to the Anabaptist movement of the Reformation period in Western and Central Europe. Mennonite groups from what is today the Netherlands and northwestern Germany settled in Danzig (Gdansk) and Polish-Prussia from the sixteenth century on-wards. At the end of the eighteenth century large numbers of their descendants began to emigrate to the southern steppes of the Ukraine, a movement which continued well into the nineteenth century. This book deals with the first century of Russian Mennonite settlement, and the dynamics of change in Mennonite communities in Russia between 1789 and 1889. It chronicles the establishment in southern Russia of prosperous agrarian colonies, the foundation of religious congregations and the creation of new economic, social and political institutions. Mennonites in Russia had to face the dual challenge of the emergence of a modern, industrial society and the increasing power of the Russian State. As Mennonites responded to these challenges, and some grew rich and successful, tension and conflict in their communities increased. This resulted in the division of congregations and communities and the further emigration of many Mennonites to North America." -- Back cover
Book Synopsis Living in God's Kingdom by : Arlene Friesen
Download or read book Living in God's Kingdom written by Arlene Friesen and published by Christian Mennonite Conference, Evangelical Mennonite Conference, Evangelical Mennonite Mission Conference. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in God’s Kingdom: a practical study guide is an attempt to devote ourselves “to the apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42) so “we reach unity in the faith” (Ephesians 4:12–13). It is to learn from Paul, as Menno Simons did, that “no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). This is a Tri-Conference work involving the Christian Mennonite Conference, Evangelical Mennonite Mission Conference, and Evangelical Mennonite Conference. Each chapter draws together the classical themes of Christian theology and Anabaptist emphases. The book includes the Apostles’ Creed and introduces the history and work of each conference. The material is suitable for classes of various ages and settings. The book can serve as a group study guide for six or more weeks, depending on how leaders select from and move through the lessons. A leader’s guide for the chapters has been developed, providing many questions and resources. Because of Jesus Christ, sent for our salvation, this book is presented to our churches to help potential, fresh, and older believers to follow Christ in life within his Church and Kingdom.
