Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Food Forum was established in 1993 to allow science and technology leaders in the food industry, top administrators in the federal government, representatives from consumer interest groups, and academicians to discuss and debate food and food safety issues openly and in a neutral setting. The Forum provides a mechanism for these diverse groups to identify possible approaches for addressing food and food safety problems and issues surrounding the often complex interactions among industry, academia, regulatory agencies, and consumers. On May 6-7, 1997, the Forum convened a workshop titled Enhancing the Regulatory Decision-Making Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies. Workshop speakers and participants discussed legal aspects of the direct food additive approval process, changes in science and technology, and opportunities for reform. Two background papers, which can be found in Appendix A and B, were shared with the participants prior to the workshop. The first paper provided a description and history of the legal framework of the food ingredient approval process and the second paper focused on changes in science and technology practices with emphasis placed on lessons learned from case studies. This document presents a summary of the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last MAFF report on lead in food was published in 1982. This new report describes surveys and research which have been carried out since then. It gives estimates of lead intakes in the UK and presents data on levels in individual foods. Lead can reach food from cooking water, from incorrect storage in cans and from the soil and atmosphere. The report looks at these different routes and at how preparation and cooking can affect lead levels. It also reviews the evidence linking alcohol consumption and lead intake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food Legislative System of the UK discusses the principles underlying the country's food laws, the historical context of today's food legislation, and the process for amendments in legislation. The book also reviews the influences on the system such as those arising from interest groups, the changing diet, and health environment. In addressing the Food Legislative System of the United Kingdom, the book tackles various examples of food legislation and numerous food- related advisory bodies. Industry, consumer, or enforcement pressures can initiate changes and modifications of laws. Once ministers are convinced that a prima-facie case exists for amending food legislation, they will seek advice from various authorities; make a draft, and present it for full parliamentary procedure. For example, the "Food and Environment Bill" has passed through Parliament by ministers representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, while the "Food Bill" has gone through another route with the chief legal officers and company. The book emphasizes the mechanisms through which change is achieved, as well as the points when opportunities exist for interest groups to make their views known to the decision makers. The book can be helpful for food lobbyists, consumer food groups, nutritionists, political scientists, and heads of food and welfare organizations.

Book excerpt: During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A paperback edition for the student market, this standard work of reference has been a bestseller for over 70 years. It is an essential tool for anyone with a professional or leisure interest in the care of animals. Much more than a list of veterinary terms, its practical approach ensures that readers gain an insight into the signs and symptoms of common, and less common, diseases, as well as their diagnosis and treatment. For this edition much new and updated information has been included, reflecting the numerous developments that have taken place in animal care and husbandry, and welfare. There is greatly expanded coverage of topics relating to popular breeds of dog and cat, and the inheritable conditions that might affect their health. Advances in medicine, surgery and diagnostic techniques; descriptions of newly identified diseases such as Schmallenberg virus; the resurgence of old scourges such as TB in cattle, and ongoing enzootic infections such as bird flu are also included in this edition. The growing risk of exotic diseases such as heartworm being imported following the relaxation of travel arrangements for dogs and cats is reflected in new entries. Notes on many new species being farmed or kept as companion animals are among the thousands of topics covered.
