Book excerpt: The author describes the influence on the Enlightenment of the intellectual currents that had been active in France, particularly the historical and humanistic esprit critique and the scientific esprit modern. In the first volume he traces the transformation they brought about in religion, ethics, aesthetics, science, politics, economics, and self-knowledge. His analysis of works by Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau—including the Encyclopedic—defines their organic unity and clarifies contradictions that appear to threaten the coherence, consistency, and logical continuity of the esprit philosophique. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entire work is divided into three parts. Each part has its accompanying chapters with corresponding introductions and conclusions. It is the incarnation that necessitated the self-emptying and self-abasement of Christ. It is the same mystery that underlies his passion and crucifixion and eventual resurrection. The mystery of incarnation capped with experiential events forms the tap root of this global vision of Christ in the poor. It is central to his theology of the poor, Christ in the poor and the poor in Christ. The incarnation and experiential events furnish the inclination and orientation Vincent’s thought pattern possesses. Such penetration and globalization process concerning the word “incarnate” are in line with the Church’s “permanent need of theological reflection.” The special inclination acts as a veneer that links other aspects. It forms a continuum, permeating and illumining the mystical link of the Vincentian Christ in the poor and the poor in Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phenomenon seldom recognized in the media of Western Europe and North America is the extraordinary growth of the Catholic Church of South America and sub-Saharan Africa during the last five decades, and nowhere more than in Nigeria. A key figure in that country and in that growth, up to his death in 1995, was Cardinal Ekandem, the first Anglophone West-African bishop - the first of many - and an outstanding churchman of the 20th Century. Fr. Michael Edem’s scholarly biography of the Cardinal is a fascinating account of a journey from life in a traditional African village to the consistory of cardinals of the Catholic Church in Rome. It will be of enormous interest to a wider public for the author’s personal knowledge of the cardinal and of the Efik/Ibibio culture in which they both grew up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete study of Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes, one of the most distinguished diplomats and statesmen of eighteenth-century France. Vergennes represented France as a diplomat in Germany, Constantinople, and Stockholm, and was Louis XVI's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Orville Murphy traces Vergennes' career as he steadily rose from the provincial nobility of the robe to the ranks of the court aristocracy; from the post of an obscure diplomat to the lofty position of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Murphy, however, has written much more than an interesting biography. The book develops a link between diplomatic personalities, the foreign policies of the French kings Louis XV and Louis XVI, and the contemporary social, economic, and political problems during much of the eighteenth century. Indeed, Vergennes and his policies are central to any study of the American Revolution, the underlying causes of the French Revolution, and of the subsequent "Age of Revolutions" in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rococo Fiction in France reconfigures the history of the “long eighteenth century” by revealing the rococo as a literary phenomenon that characterized a range of experimental texts from the end of the French Renaissance to the eve of the French Revolution. Tracing the literary rococo’s evolution from the late 1500s to the early 1700s, and exploring its radicalization during the 1670s, 80s, and 90s, Allison Stedman unearths the seventeenth century rococo’s counter-vision for the trajectory of the French monarchy and the dawn of the French Enlightenment. The first part of the study investigates the relationship between Montaigne’s philosophy of literary production and those of early seventeenth century “table-talk” novelists, libertine writers, and playwrights involved in the quarrel over Corneille’s play Le Cid. She thus establishes the existence of a rococo philosophy of literary production whose goal was to innovate, to bring pleasure, and to create communities. The second part of the study explores the impact that the Duchess de Montpensier’s literary portrait galleries, Jean Donneau de Visé’s periodical the Mercure Galant, and other forms of rococo literary production – by such authors as Charles Sorel, Alcide de Saint-Maurice, J.N. de Parvial and Jean de Préchac – had in the creation of a textually mediated social sphere that served as the foundation of the publicly critical culture of the French Enlightenment. The study concludes with an investigation of the influx of salon sociability into the textually mediated social sphere during the 1690s. Stedman examines the role of interpolated literary fairy tales, proverb plays and other rococo publication strategies– in such late seventeenth-century women writers as d’Aulnoy, Lhéritier, Murat, and Durand – in transfiguring the salon from an exclusive social circle mediated by physical presence to an inclusive social diaspora mediated by texts. Rococo Fiction in France challenges established views of early modern French literary history and discusses a range of little known works in a generous and engaging manner.
