Book Synopsis Francis Poulenc by : Keith W. Daniel
Download or read book Francis Poulenc written by Keith W. Daniel and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : UMI Research Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining a composer's style and artistic development is an imposing task. A composer's style is what makes his music his. A definition of that style would determine all the features common to individual works, separating those specific to the composer from those common to his contemporaries. An account of his artistic development would add to the definition of his style the sources and changing nature of that style. This is the central concern of this book, the first complete survey of the music of Poulenc. Considering both the diversity of sources for Poulenc's style and the size and diversity of his output, the author set himself a sizable undertaking. While the resulting study does not reach any great depth in dealing with individual works or with Poulenc's style as a whole, the book is a good introduction to the composer's life and works. The author's method of analysis and discussion raises some questions about our assumptions in dealing with the music of a 20th-century composer who is viewed as basically conservative and traditional. The author has raised many issues worthy of further investigation.

Book excerpt: First produced in Venice in 1761, The Impresario From Smyrna is a comedy depicting the vanities of eighteenth century Italian opera singers. Ali, a wealthy merchant from Smyrna, is planning to introduce Italian opera into Turkey and has enlisted the aid of two agents, Count Lasca and Nibio. Ali is attracted to three pretty sopranos, Lucrezia, Tognina and Annina, but their constant bickering over who is to be considered the prima donna and the exorbitant demands of all concerned make him reconsider his plans. He returns to the relative peace of his Smyrna harem, leaving the company a small sum of money, which they decide to spend on launching a theatre. From the performers to the impresario, the play is a funny look at behind-the-scene rivalries, diva fits, casting couches and audition gossip but it is also about the beautiful vulnerability of the romanticized artistic personae and the mythologies that surround stage life."

Download or read book The Amnesiac written by Sam Taylor and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-06-24 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping literary thriller from an exciting new voice in fiction Hailed as 'one to watch' by the UK's Telegraph, Sam Taylor is one of the most imaginative and innovative young writers at work today. With The Amnesiac, his United States debut, he incorporates a murder mystery and a forgotten manuscript into an exhilarating and intelligent novel. When twenty-nine-year-old James Purdew returns to England from his home in Amsterdam, it is to discover what happened during three earlier years of his life that he cannot recall. What he finds, in an old house with a tragic history, is a nineteenth-century manuscript that begins to seem less and less like a work of fiction-and more like the key to his own lost past. Memory and amnesia, fiction and reality, destiny and randomness, heaven and hell-all converge to form an engrossing gothic story that is sure to appeal to fans of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind.
