Book excerpt: Corinth has been an important site for the study of ancient glass since the pioneering work of Gladys Davidson Weinberg. This volume presents the first attempt at Corinth to analyze the entire corpus of glass found in a single area, that located just east of the Theater, the focus of excavations conducted by the American School of Classical Studies in the 1980s. These excavations revealed a north-south street that flanked the Theater, as well as a series of buildings to its east, part of a residential neighborhood ranging in date from the Early Roman to the Early Byzantine period. In this volume-the first of the final reports from the East of Theater excavations-the author presents the glass finds, including over 450 cataloged examples of glassworking remains, vessel glass, and non-vessel glass. Significantly, these finds reveal shifting patterns in vessel types, manufacturing techniques, and trade, as well as evidence for local glass production throughout these periods. Included among the finds are fragments of two opus sectile panels, evidence of the type of luxurious decoration that once existed in these structures. This groundbreaking study provides a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of everyday Corinthians, advancing glass studies both within Greece and throughout the Mediterranean.

Book excerpt: Miniature votive offerings are small non-functional representations of day to day objects that are commonly found on sanctuary sites in the north-west provinces of the Roman Empire. They are frequently seen as evidence for a universal Romano-Celtic rite of miniaturisation, which enabled individual worshippers to dedicate models in the place of things they could not otherwise afford. This practice is typically seen as belonging to a Roman tradition of making personal votive offerings, which replaced the large scale ritual deposition of war booty and precious metal that had characterised Iron Age religion. By considering these objects in light of their archaeological findspots, distribution, chronology and symbolic significance, this book demonstrates that miniature votive offerings were not produced as part of a single ritual phenomenon. The various types (wheels, arms and armour, axes, coins, tools, the so-called Mithrassymbole etc.) were all produced for specific and often unrelated reasons. Some were communal, rather than individual offerings, and functioned as substitutes for high value offerings of the past that were now no longer feasible. Such offerings belong to a transitional phase between Iron Age and Roman religion. Other miniature votive offerings, deposited both by individuals and groups, functioned as symbols of particular divinities or ritual acts and were used from the late Iron Age to the end of the Roman period. Seemingly insignificant and simple artefacts, miniature votive offerings present a wealth of insight into ancient religious practices and mentalities.

Il nous est donc apparu intéressant de réunir, à l'occasion d'un colloque tenu à Tours en mars 2003, les chercheurs, historiens et archéologues, concernés par cette question, pour s'interroger sur les explications que l'on peut proposer à ce constat : celui de l'échec relatif de certaines capitales de cités choisies comme telle au début de l'Empire qui, comme villes et en tout cas comme lieux de pouvoir, n'ont pas pu survivre aux mutations culturelles et aux soubresauts qu'ont connu les Gaules à partir du 3e siècle. L'interrogation a été examinée à travers des synthèses régionales, mais aussi un certain nombre d'études de as sur l'un ou l'autre de ces sites spécifiques : le présent volume concerne les 20 communications constituant les Actes de ce colloque ; elles sont suivies d'un Atlas quasi exhaustif de quelque 40 notices portant sur les chefs-lieux concernés des Gaules, sous une forme courte et dans une présentation homogène.
