Lors de la guerre de Crimée (1853-56), l’envoyé spécial du Times, William Howard Russell, refusa d’encenser les généraux qui exposaient leurs propres troupes à des dangers insensés et les condamnaient à des conditions de vie infâme. « En portant à la connaissance de la nation britannique la souffrance de ces troupes, William Russell sauva les rescapés de ces grands bataillons que nous avions débarqués en septembre », s’exclama Sir Evelyn Wood, un éminent officier de sa Gracieuse Majesté. Son rédacteur en chef, John Thadeus Delane, membre éminent de l’establishment, l’appuya sans réserve et rédigea un des éditoriaux les plus fameux de l’histoire du journalisme de guerre : « L’armée la plus noble partie de nos rivages a été sacrifiée à la gabegie la plus grossière, écrivit-il. L’incompétence, la léthargie, la morgue aristocratique, la perversité et la stupidité règnent. Le Commandant en chef et son staff ont survécu sur les hauteurs de Sébastopol, ils ont été décorés, anoblis, dûment cités dépêche après dépêche, et ils rentrent chez eux pour jouir de pensions et d’honneurs au milieu des os de 50 000 soldats britanniques. » Lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, la grande presse choisit massivement le camp des généraux et elle se gagna l’hostilité des soldats parce qu’elle mentait sur la réalité de la guerre. La naissance de la « presse de tranchée », dont le fameux Canard enchaîné, s’explique aussi par ce rejet d’une presse aux ordres, qui présentait un tableau embelli de la guerre et célébrait la grandeur des gradés arrogants qui envoyaient les poilus à la boucherie. « Au fil des mois, se creusa un fossé croissant entre soldats et arrière, entre informations publiées et réalité, écrit l’historien Bernard Cahier. L’étude emprunte à Michel Foucault (Surveiller et punir, 1975) les mécanismes de surveillance de la modernité que sont les appareils disciplinaire et panoptique, et rattache l’intégration journalistique à la surveillance continue et flexible caractéristique de la « société de contrôle ». L’auteur expose un dispositif embedding où s’exercent les rapports de force entre militaires et journalistes et qui opère dans un espace précis où les mouvements, les reportages, les conduites et les -communications des journalistes sont surveillés.
