Sleep related breathing disorders have been known for many years to be an important cause of daytime disability I a huge amount of literature about this topic has been written in the last ten or fifteen years. Because of the practical relevance owing to the high competence of the authors we hope that the lectures and discussions we had at Graz will enjoy and inform the interested reader. I want to express my deep gratitude to all the authors for providing us with the manuscripts and graphs. I am especially grateful to Mrs. H. Weber for her secreterial work and to Mrs. Mag. A. Lahrmann-Ramharter for correcting the written version of the speeches and preparing a manuscript that was ready for the press. Prim. Dr. Hartmut Zwick Contents Douglas J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Cl. Gaultier, Pathologie respiratoire du sommeil, La Presse Medicale, 16, 561-563, 1987), and anesthesia is even less safe. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Ondine's Curse and various respiratory complications of general anesthesia are not so rare; as a matter of fact they happen much too frequently. The idea of organizing another symposium dealing with breathing in sleep and anesthesia has been discussed almost immediately after we said "good bye" to the Organizers of the excellent Paris meeting "The Regulation of Respiration during Sleep and Anesthesia" (R.S. Fitzgerald, H. Gautier, S. Lahiri eds., Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, vol. 99, Plenum, New York 1978). Taking into account the impressive amount of data that have emerged during the last few years, we have decided that we shall meet and discuss them; we hoped also that the publication of the scientific material might be useful for everybody interested in the physiology and pathophysiology of breathing, anesthesia and sleep. So we met in Warsaw under the auspices of the European Society for Clinical Respiratory Physiology and the Polish Academy of Sciences, we discussed vividly many fascinating papers presented by our Colleagues from Europe and America and Plenum Press has published the proceedings. I hope that the final result will satisfy the reader.

Moreover, individuals with the condition are often unaware of it as it affects them during sleep. The book provides knowledge on appropriate pathways for investigation and treatment. The organization and clarity of the writing make it easy for readers who want quick information on diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, and more. The thorough history section covering anatomical evolution, the history of medicine, and modern-day medical and surgical advances will satisfy curious readers. Ample original hand-drawn diagrams increase the readability and approachability of the work, making pathophysiology and surgical procedures clear and accessible. The book also includes links and descriptions of up-to-date procedures, diagnostic techniques, and devices, guiding readers confidently towards other resources beyond the book for further information. Given its features, this guide will appeal also to general practitioners, ENT students, and OSA specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). This book presents important new research in this field.

Book excerpt: Excessive daily sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea is a multifaceted complaint that usually involves disabling symptoms. Despite being a common complaint, best practice regarding the management of patients is not well defined, and failure to recognize the severity of the effects of symptoms on quality of life results in underdiagnosis, preventing patients from receiving adequate treatment. 'Fast Facts: Excessive Daily Sleepiness Associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea' discusses the difficulties in formulating a single definition of excessive daily sleepiness that appropriately considers the experiences and features of daytime sleepiness, alongside an up-to-date overview of how to accurately assess patients, and ensure effective management and support. Table of Contents: • Epidemiology and etiology • Clinical features and diagnosis • Management • Patient impact and support

Book excerpt: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, sleep-disordered breathing, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, including cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment. Both the prevalence and the awareness of breathing disturbances during sleep have increased markedly in recent years. This is partly due to advances in diagnosis and treatment but is also due to an increase in the prevalence of obesity and the age of the population. The current estimate of the prevalence of clinically significant Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is about 5%. This increasingly common condition is treatable provided that it is recognized and managed appropriately. 'Fast Facts: Obstructive Sleep Apnea' is the work of two experienced, international experts and is specifically targeted to primary care physicians to equip them with the knowledge needed to diagnose and manage this disorder successfully in cooperation with specialists. Contents: • Epidemiology and risk factors • Clinical presentation • Medical complications • Diagnosis • Medical management • Surgery • Future trends.
