Book Synopsis Peasants and Protest by : Laura Levine Frader
Download or read book Peasants and Protest written by Laura Levine Frader and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-04-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decade of the twentieth century, the sleepy vineyard towns of the Aude department of southern France exploded with strikes and protests. Agricultural workers joined labor unions, the Socialist party established a base among peasant vinegrowers, and the largest peasant uprising of twentieth-century France, the great vinegrowers' revolt of 1907, shook the entire south with massive demonstrations. In this study, Laura Levine Frader explains how left-wing politics and labor radicalism in the Aude emerged from the economic and social transformation of rural society between 1850 and 1914. She describes the formation of an agricultural wage-earning class, and discusses how socialism and a revolutionary syndicalist labor movement together forged working-class identity. Frader's focus on the making of the rural proletariat takes the study of class formation out of the towns and cities and into the countryside. Frader emphasizes the complexity of social structure and political life in the Aude, describing the interaction of productive relations, the gender division of labor, community solidarities, and class alliances. Her analysis raises questions about the applicability of an urban, industrial model of class formation to rural society. This study will be of interest to French social historians, agricultural historians, and those interested in the relationship between capitalism, class formation, and labor militancy.
Book Synopsis Prison Journal, 1940-1945 by : Edouard Daladier
Download or read book Prison Journal, 1940-1945 written by Edouard Daladier and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1995-03-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The French Prime Minister who signed the Munich Agreement in 1938 and who one year later led his country into war against Hitler's Germany, Edouard Daladier was arrested by the Vichy regime and imprisoned in France and Germany until the war's end. As a pastime and a catharsis, Daladier wrote." "He wrote about what had happened to him and to his country, about day-to-day conditions in captivity, and about what he could glean of the anti-Nazi war effort through newspaper accounts, from the visits of his friends and family, and from his well-hidden radio receiver. He wrote of the accusations made against him by his former proteges and comrades-in-arms; and of his trial, during which the charges oddly metamorphosed from having declared war on Germany to not having sufficiently prepared France for battle (the charges were of little importance, as the verdict had been previously decided)." "Ever the statesman, Daladier wrote most of all about his hopes and fears for France and Europe - which hung so heavily, at first, upon the battlefield successes of the British, American, and Allied forces; and later, upon the Allies' refusal to recognize in Soviet power the danger of the very totalitarianism that they had been fighting to eliminate. At the war's end, witnessing the devastation of Germany, Daladier wrote with a poignant sympathy that is unexpectedly moving." "Daladier's notes remained forgotten and unpublished until twenty years after his death, when they were discovered and compiled by his son Jean. They are presented here in English for the first time. By turns sorrowful, enraged, humorous, and philosophical, this lively narrative gives fresh insights into the tangled politics of the era."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis The Development of the Radical Right in France by : Edward J. Arnold

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the context of the continuing debate on the conundrum of fascism, it is significant that the themes of organic nationalism and anti-Semitism that were developed in Belle Epoque France not only fed subsequent forms of fascism (Italian and German) but were also to become a significant part of the discourse of French extreme-right and fascist movements and intellectuals during the interwar years. These themes were a driving force behind the anti-Semitic policies of Vichy and its involvement in the Final Solution. Some aspects of this ideological tradition have reappeared in postwar France and are notably identifiable in the ideology and political myths of the two National Front movements in contemporary France."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Senegal written by Michael Crowder and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published as a revised edition in 1967, this book covers an aspect of Senegalese history of great importance not only for the student of French Colonial policy but also for those interested in the development of nationalism in French-speaking Africa. Senegal was the only French colony in Africa where any sustained attempt was made to implement the much-discussed policy of assimilation. In a concise and authoritative study, the author assesses the effects of this unique experiment in colonial rule and examines the reasons for its failure and repudiation by both France and Senegal, and the marks it left on the latter.

Book Synopsis Electoral Systems and Democratization in Southern Africa by : Andrew Reynolds
Download or read book Electoral Systems and Democratization in Southern Africa written by Andrew Reynolds and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of electoral systems and executive types is increasingly being recognized the key lever of constitutional engineering to be applied in the interests of political accommodation and stability in ethnically divided societies. In this groundbreaking comparative study of democratic design in Southern Africa, Andrew Reynolds finds that the decisions about how to constitute representative parliaments have wide ranging effects on the type of parties and party system that develops, the nature of executive-legislative relations, and the inclusiveness of both majority and minority interests in the process of governance. While electoral system design is the primary focus of the book, the related constitutional issues of whether to choose a presidential or parliamentary system, and whether to entrench consensual, consociational or majoritarian government are also discussed. Analysing the experiences of Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the author presents a host of revealing conclusions that help shed light on the success or failure of democratic design in other fledgling democracies, in both Africa and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what may well rank as the finest political and intellectual history of the twentieth century, the late J. L. Talmon explores the origins of the schism within European society between the totalitarians of Right and Left as well as the split between an acceptance of the historical national community as the natural political and social framework and the vision of a socialist society achieved by a universal revolutionary breakthrough. This, the third and final volume of Talmon's history of the modern world, brings to bear the resources of his incisive scholarship to examine the workings of the ironies of totalitarianism as well as the resources of democracy.

Book Synopsis Explorations in Economic Sociology by : Richard Swedberg
Download or read book Explorations in Economic Sociology written by Richard Swedberg and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1993-08-19 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1980s, as public discourse has focused increasingly on the troubled economy, many social scientists have argued the need for more analysis of the social relationships that undergird economic life. The original essays in Explorations in Economic Sociology represent the most important work in this renewed field and employ a rich variety of research methods—theoretical, ethnographic, and historical—to illustrate its key concerns. Explorations in Economic Sociology forges innovative social theories of such economic institutions as money, markets, and industry. Although traditional economists have identified markets as driven solely by the forces of supply and demand, social factors frequently intervene. Sales at auction are determined not simply by a seller's personal knowledge of customers. Shareholder attitudes and employee organization influence everything from the way firms borrow money to the way corporate performance is measured. Firms themselves operate in social networks in which trust is a crucial factor in settling the terms for cooperation or competition. Throughout the essays in this volume, the contributors point the way to developing a more healthy economy by fostering productive industrial networks, avoiding disintegration at management levels, and anticipating the consequences of the shift from manufacturing to service industries. Explorations in Economic Sociology is a pioneering work that bridges the gap between social theory and economic analysis and demonstrates the importance of this union in achieving an effective understanding of economic issues. The book should stimulate new interest in economic sociology by bringing together many of its most fundamental voices.
