Elle s'appuie notamment sur une enquête de terrain menée dans un des quartiers défavorisés de Roubaix, ancienne ville industrielle du Nord de la France, qui nous apporte une connaissance concrète du contexte historique et socioéconomique, ainsi que des dynamiques locales de développement. Ainsi analysé, l'éventail très large d'initiatives, de formes organisationnelles et de modes innovants de coordination met en évidence le rôle spécifique de l'économie sociale entre le marché concurrentiel et l'administration publique. L'économie sociale représente en effet un potentiel important dans la lutte contre l'exclusion sociale en conciliant les objectifs d'emploi, de formation et de revenus pour tous, y compris les personnes vulnérables. Au-delà de la plus-value sociétale apportée par l'inclusion des usagers à la production des services et par la « responsabilisation sociale » des entreprises, l'économie sociale peut aussi déboucher sur un modèle alternatif de développement grâce à son système entrepreneurial spécifique basé sur des valeurs telles que l'éthique, la solidarité, la réciprocité et le développement socioéconomique durable.

She narrates the realities of local administration and civil society to shed critical light on questions of democratic transition in North Africa. Her assessment of decentralisation and participatory development projects in rural Morocco, and the legal and policy frameworks in which they operate, leads to the conclusion that they have generally not yet led to an expansion of a civil society able to build local capacity or enhance bottom-up empowerment. What could enhance creativity in local development and planning? Is it possible to talk about creative capacity building at the level of a town that might release imaginative and innovative activities? Under what local and non-local conditions is creativity being initiated and flourishing? What are the major obstacles and in what way can these be contained in order to safeguard pockets of creative action? Interdisciplinary and with case studies from France, Norway and other European countries, this volume presents a wide range of approaches and territorial contexts of small cities and towns in which spatial dynamics and the consequences of the city-region for urban planning theory and practice in Europe are highlighted, with a special focus on the challenges for - and understanding of - planning and development of SMSTs. Book excerpt: This study assesses the impact of artisanal gold mining in the Ngoyla-Mintom Forest Massif (NMFM) on local livelihoods and the environment. The methodology for the research consisted in a literature review, visits to eight mining camps in the periphery of Mintom, interviews with 95 miners, focus group discussions with actors involved in activities related to gold mining, and stakeholder consultations. The results show that miners earn a minimum of XAF 80,000 (US$ 160) per month, which is about three times the average wage in Cameroon (XAF 28,216 or US$56) and as much as XAF 800,000 (US$ 1600) a month. Mining leads to the creation of many associated activities such as portering, catering and the intensification of hunting, collection of NTFPs, and fishing, among others. The most negative social impact of mining is associated with activities such as prostitution, which leads to the quick spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV/AIDS. Mining and its associated activities also have negative impacts on the environment such as destruction of fragile forest ecosystems especially swamps, diversion, sedimentation and pollution of small water ways, and soil destruction, although at a relatively small scale.
