Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.

Solid state fermentation, popularly abbreviated as SSF, is currently investigated by many groups throughout the world. The study of this technique was largely neglected in the past in European and Western countries and there is now a high demand for SSF, meaning in food, environment, agricultural, phannaceutical and many other biotechnological applications. It gives me satisfaction to note that the importance of this technique was realised at my department way back in 1975 since then, our team has put concentrated efforts on developing this technique. xvii Foreword Advances in Solid State Fermentation Foreword M. PUYGRENIER Agropolis Valorisation, Avenue d' Agropolis, 34394 Montpellier Cedex 5, France. On the name of the Scientific Community, I would like to express the wish that this International Symposium on SSF should be successful. Solid State Fermentation is part of biotechnology research. It consists on seeding solid culture medium with bacteria or fungi (filamentous or higher) and on producing, in this medium (solid components and exudates) metabolites and high value products. In fact, this process is very old. In older industries such the food and agricultural, this technique has been extensively used. An example of this is the production of pork sausages and Roquefort cheese. Pharmaceutical industry could make extensive use of SSF in the production of secondary metabolites of many kinds and development in this direction is soon expected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Book excerpt: A concise assessment of the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to benzoic acid and sodium benzoate. Benzoic acid is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of several compounds, including phenol and caprolactam. The compound is increasingly used in the production of diethylene and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate plasticizers in adhesive formulations, and to improve the properties of alkyd resins for paints and coatings. Most releases of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate into the environment result from their use as preservatives in food, beverages, mouthwashes, dentifrices, and cosmetics. For sodium benzoate, the largest use is as an anticorrosive added to antifreeze coolants. Processed foodstuffs and soft drinks are considered the main sources of exposure for the general population. Concerning behavior in the environment, both compounds are readily biodegraded under aerobic conditions and are unlikely to bioaccumulate. In laboratory animals, exposure to high concentrations caused weight gain and adverse effects on the central nervous system, liver, and kidney. While data are limited, studies suggest that the compounds do not cause adverse effects on development or reproduction and are not carcinogenic. In humans, reports of adverse effects are largely confined to cases of urticaria, asthma, rhinitis, and anaphylactic shock following oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure to these compounds, including for medical purposes. No evaluation of long-term effects on health was possible in view of the limited data available

Book excerpt: This review of China's health sector begins by noting China's achievements in population control, health status, and nutrition. The policies, sources of financing, and resource use that have contributed to China's successes are cited, and the evolution of several influences on health from outside the sector are discussed, including nutritional improvements, greater access to clean water and sanitary waste disposal, and fertility reduction. Two major challenges now face China's health sector: (i) extending the methods that have been successful to areas where mortality rates and deaths due to infectious diseases remain high; and (ii) developing and implementing approaches to management of chronic disease that combine prevention, low-cost treatment, rehabilitation, and humane care. Major innovation will be essential because resources are limited and plans for meeting the health needs of the population are ambitious. Institutions capable of innovation, experimentation, and analysis of public health problems must be developed. The report includes discussion of specific issues in the sector.
