Book Synopsis Learning, Knowledge and Cultural Context by : Linda King
Download or read book Learning, Knowledge and Cultural Context written by Linda King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of the International Review of Education includes contri butions on indigenous knowledge, the cultural context of learning and on the interplay between the so-called "traditional" and "modern" ways of educa tion. It starts from the assumption that cultures are not static, that they are shifting and mutating, and that the Western need to encapsulate "other cultures", which found its most extreme form in their being frozen in time and boxed behind glass in museums of ethnology, has distorted our under standing of the way in which different cultures create, recreate and repro duce knowledge. The basic premise of this position is that there is no such thing as a pure culture, and that all cultures borrow, lend, adapt, and distort distinct elements from other cultures. All cultures, moreover, provide their members with ways of learning about that culture, which include elements such as language, forms of social organisation, and ritual spaces for the trans mission of specialised knowledge. Meaning may be shifted over time, but that in itself is a product of the passage of knowledge through history. Indeed, much meaning is cyclical and reinterpretive so that cultures may look back to a mythological past which they assumed gave them their essential identity but which may be part fact, part fantasy, and part fiction. This is then rein terpreted in the light of changed and changing historical circumstances.
Book Synopsis Oral Narration in Modern French by : Janice Carruthers
Download or read book Oral Narration in Modern French written by Janice Carruthers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Storytelling is a universal human activity and oral narration - particularly modern 'conversational' narration such as anecdotes or personal stories - has long been fertile ground for linguists working on tense usage across a variety of languages. This book introduces 'performed' oral storytelling into the debate, using data from traditional and contemporary storytellers in French to explore the narrative tenses attested, the discourse-pragmatic effects of tense switching, the structures deployed at points of temporal sequence, as well as broader questions concerning the nature of oral discourse."
Book Synopsis Gendered Resistance by : Valérie Baisnée
Download or read book Gendered Resistance written by Valérie Baisnée and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four major women's autobiographies of the twentieth century are discussed together here for the first time. Valérie Baisnée reinterprets the autobiographical writing of Simone De Beauvoir, Maya Angelou, Janet Frame and Marguerite Duras, finding some striking similarities in these women's resistance to a conservative order. Deploying a variety of theoretical approaches, from linguistic to Marxist, Baisnée endeavours to break the restrictive patterns of author-centred studies, to go beyond simple oppositions between truth and fiction, and to dispense with the facile interpretation of these texts as confessional. For Valérie Baisnée, Autobiography is meant to represent not the true but the official version of a life, signed by the author herself and revered as hagiography by the public. ... Instead of analysing women's autobiographies as confessional, it is possible to see this mode of discourse as a means to counteract the effect of exposure of women's private lives. By revealing their past, however painful it may be, the four autobiographers studied in this book also enhance their present strength, and therefore underline the political nature of the autobiography.

Book Synopsis La rÈtisserie de la Reine P_dauque by : Anatole France

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

by : Vincent Laville
Download or read book written by Vincent Laville and published by Vincent Laville. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear friends, this book is expensive because the photos make the file very heavy. In any case, the author is paid a pittance. In my country it says that a picture narrates more than a long speech. People need to see the reality to believe. Be sure that democracy exist only in dreams. This book is mainly about police cruelty, state crimes and about unacceptable times and events. Denouncing, protesting, vociferating, stamping your feet, assisting people, writing books or voting, is absolutely useless. If NGOs, charities or goodwill were a solution, there would no longer be beggars and poor every where on this planet. But this is not the case. So it doesn't work. But please, don't get slaughtered for demands anymore, with a song, signs and a slingshot to defend yourself. Fire is fought with fire. Infections with potions. Weeds with weedkiller. And evil is combated by doing evil. Everything is gangrenous. There is no democratic solution. Wake up. It is the harmful parasites or you.
Book Synopsis Rimbaud's Theatre of the Self by : James R. Lawler
Download or read book Rimbaud's Theatre of the Self written by James R. Lawler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a new interpretation of a poet who has swayed the course of modern poetry--in France and elsewhere--James Lawler focuses on what he demonstrates is the crux of Rimbaud's imagination: the masks and adopted personas with which he regularly tested his identity and his art. A drama emerges in Lawler's urbane and resourceful reading. The thinking, feeling, acting Drunken Boat is an early theatrical projection of the poet's self; the Inventor, the Memorialist, and the Ing nu assume distinct roles in his later verse. It is, however, in Illuminations and Une Saison en enfer that Rimbaud enacts most powerfully his grandiose dreams. Here the poet becomes Self Creator, Self-Critic, Self-Ironist; he takes the parts of Floodmaker, Oriental Storyteller, Dreamer, Lover; and he recounts his descent into Hell in the guise of a Confessor. In delineating and exploring the poet's "theatre of the self" Lawler shows us the tragic lucidity and the dramatic coherence of Rimbaud's work.

Book Synopsis Late Victorian Orientalism by : Eleonora Sasso
Download or read book Late Victorian Orientalism written by Eleonora Sasso and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Victorian Orientalism is a work of scholarly research pushing forward disciplines into new areas of enquiry. This collection of essays tries to redefine the task of interpreting the East in the nineteenth century taking as a starting point Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) in order to investigate the visual, fantasised, and imperialist representations of the East as well as the most exemplary translations of Oriental texts. The Victorians envisioned the East in many different modes or Orientalisms since as Said suggested ‘[t]here were, perhaps, as many Orientalisms as Orientalists’. By combining together Western and Oriental modes of art, this study is not only aimed at filling a gap in Victorian and Oriental studies but also at broadening the audiences it is intended for.
