This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 1154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2000's most significant international event was, almost certainly, neither political nor military, but scientific - the announcement, in June, that the human genome had been almost totally decoded. Future generations may well see this as a major turning point, opening the way to radical changes in diagnosis, prognosis, and medical treatment. Often compared with the space programme, this vast enterprise still generates misgivings: this new power, which human beings now have, to modify the genetic heritage of living creatures raises fundamentally new ethical questions - and society as a whole will have to find the answers. In fact, the accelerating pace of scientific and technical progress seems to be reviving atavistic anxieties, some rational, others less so. Recent public-health crises, including the mad cow disease' scare, which lasted into 2000, have fuelled these fears. The public's rejection of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) - verging on a crusade in some countries - tells its own story. As regards conflict, 2000 saw the Middle East peace process grind to a halt, and the Intifada resume. In Europe, the situation in Kosovo and Chechnya, both the scenes of fighting in 1999, stayed precarious. Peace and democracy did score some successes, however, particularly in Europe: the centre-left's victory in Croatia, sweeping former President Tudjman's party off the scene, the democratic party's triumph in Bosnia, and the fall of the Milosevic regime in Serbia.

Book Synopsis Working in the Global Film and Television Industries by : Andrew Dawson
Download or read book Working in the Global Film and Television Industries written by Andrew Dawson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many other cultural commodities, films and TV shows tend to work in such a way as to obscure the conditions under which they are produced, a process that has been reinforced by dominant trends in the practice of Film and Television Studies. This collection places the workplace experiences of industry workers at centre stage. It looks at film and television production in a variety of social, economic, political, and cultural contexts. The book provides detailed analyses of specific systems of production and their role in shaping the experience of work, whilst also engaging with the key theoretical and methodological questions involved in film and television production. Drawing together the work of historians, film scholars, and anthropologists, it looks at film and television production not only in Hollywood and Western Europe but also in less familiar settings such as the Soviet Union, India, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chronologically wide-ranging, interdisciplinary and international in scope, it is a unique introduction, critical for all students of the film industries and film production.

Book Synopsis Contemporary African Cultural Productions by : V.Y. Mudimbe
Download or read book Contemporary African Cultural Productions written by V.Y. Mudimbe and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over Africa, an explosion in cultural productions of various genres is in evidence. Whether in relation to music, song and dance, drama, poetry, film, documentaries, photography, cartoons, fine arts, novels and short stories, essays, and (auto)biography; the continent is experiencing a robust outpouring of creative power that is as remarkable for its originality as its all-round diversity. Beginning from the late 1970s and early 1980s, the African continent has experienced the longest and deepest economic crises than at any other time since the period after the Second World War. Interestingly however, while practically every indicator of economic development was declining in nominal and/ or real terms for most aspects of the continent, cultural productions were on the increase. Out of adversity, the creative genius of the African produced cultural forms that at once spoke to crises and sought to transcend them. The current climate of cultural pluralism that has been produced in no small part by globalization has not been accompanied by an adequate pluralism of ideas on what culture is, and/or should be; nor informed by an equal claim to the production of the cultural packaged or not. Globalization has seen to movement and mixture, contact and linkage, interaction and exchange where cultural flows of capital, people, commodities, images and ideologies have meant that the globe has become a space, with new asymmetries, for an increasing intertwinement of the lives of people and, consequently, of a greater blurring of normative definitions as well as a place for re-definition, imagined and real. As this book Contemporary African Cultural Productions has done, researching into African culture and cultural productions that derive from it allows us, among other things, to enquire into definitions, explore historical dimensions, and interrogate the political dimensions to presentation and representation. The book therefore offers us an intervention that goes beyond the normative literary and cultural studies main foci of race, difference and identity; notions which, while important in themselves might, without the necessary historicizing and interrogating, result in a discourse that rather re-inscribes the very patterns that necessitate writing against. This book is an invaluable compendium to scholars, researchers, teachers, students and others who specialize on different aspects of African culture and cultural productions, as well as cultural centers and general readers.

Book Synopsis Law and Business in France by : Christopher Joseph Mesnooh
Download or read book Law and Business in France written by Christopher Joseph Mesnooh and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and Business in France has been written specifically with the foreign investor in mind by an American attorney practicing in French and international law in Paris on behalf of a world-wide clientele. It sets forth in clear, non-technical language, the full range of legal considerations which foreign investors will need to consider in order to successfully carry out their activities in France. Although the primary focus of this work is French law, Community law is also treated whenever necessary so as to provide the reader with the fullest possible framework. This volume explains company formation, sales and distribution methods, corporate and personal income taxation, investment regulations, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, liquidation, antitrust regulation, intellectual property, the banking and environmental regulatory framework and labor and immigration law. It also contains an invaluable French-English legal glossary designed to assist the reader in understanding contracts and legal correspondence exchange during commercial transactions of any nature. Due to the balance struck between a thorough treatment of legal considerations and the desire to avoid overly technical language, this volume is appropriate to attorneys, business people and all investors wishing to acquire a well-informed view concerning the legal regulation of commerce in France. Its concise format permits rapid consultation and thus allows its reader to efficiently obtain the information needed to successfully structure and complete commercial transactions in France.
