Cependant, la religion monothéiste s'étant imposée face au polythéisme grec et romain, a fini par recréer en son sein l'idolâtrie qu'elle prétendait ruiner. D'une part, le dogme de l'incarnation a autorisé l'inscription de Dieu dans l'Histoire aboutissant à sa divinisation et légitimant ainsi les contraintes des sociétés humaines. D'autre part, le Dieu unique étant compris comme la totalité de ce qui est, chaque créature est appelée à se soumettre à sa loi et à obéir à ses représentants. Ainsi la religion se transforme-t-elle en politique totalitaire. Henry Corbin oppose à cette réalité les leçons des gnoses islamiques, juives et chrétiennes, montrant qu'à partir de la même révélation deux voies s'ouvrent : l'une est celle des religions officielles, légataires et littéralistes où l'Eglise et ses servitudes relayent la voix du Dieu caché, l'autre est la religion de la Beauté et de la Gnose où Dieu rend unique chaque créature, fondant ainsi son individualité.

Rather than underlining the differences between a revamped paganism and the emergent Christian traditions, the essays in the volume focus on the processes of osmosis, interaction and acculturation, which shaped the change in priorities among the newly created textual communities that were spreading across the entire breadth of the late antique oecumene. The main issues considered in this connection include the phenomena of textuality and holy scripture, canonicity and exclusion, truth and error, prophecy and tradition, authority and challenge, faith and salvation, holy places and holy men, in the context of the construction of new orthodox readings of the Greek philosophical heritage. Moreover the volume suggests that intolerant attitudes, which form a characteristic trait of monotheisms, were not an exclusive preserve of Christianity (as the Enlightenment tradition would insist), but were progressively espoused by pagan philosophers and divine men as part of the theory and practice of Hellenism‘s theological koine. Efforts to establish the monopoly of a revealed truth against any rival claims were transversal to the textual communities which emerged in late antiquity and remodelled the intellectual and spiritual landscape of the Greater Mediterranean.

It was in this atmosphere that the careers of Scholem, Eliade, and Corbin--the twentieth century's legendary scholars in the respective fields of Judaism, History of Religions, and Islam--converged and ultimately revolutionized how people thought about religion. Between 1949 and 1978, all three lectured to Carl Jung's famous Eranos circle in Ascona, Switzerland, where each in his own way came to identify the symbolism of mystical experience as a central element of his monotheistic tradition. In this, the first book ever to compare the paths taken by these thinkers, Steven Wasserstrom explores how they overturned traditional approaches to studying religion by de-emphasizing law, ritual, and social history and by extolling the role of myth and mysticism.
