Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saint Joseph Leonardo Boff seeks to provide a vigorous critique and theological analysis of Saint Joseph and in so doing attempts to undo historical misconceptions, misunderstandings, and cliches that surround the figure of Joseph. The book provides a comprehensive view of the topic as it takes into account biblical references, including the apocrypha, church tradition, papal edicts, liturgical expressions, and various viewpoints proposed by theologians. Boff is also concerned with updating the figure of Saint Joseph; his first step in this direction is to provide a clear understanding of the life of Joseph as an artisan, husband, father, and educator. He then deals with the issue of the importance of Saint Joseph for current issues concerning family and fatherhood. Lastly, Boff argues that Saint Joseph helps us to understand new facets of the mystery of God, and the author does this through his argument concerning the order of hypostatic union, where, according to his argument, there is a relation between Jesus and the Son, Mary and the Holy Spirit, and Joseph and the Father. Boff seeks here to fill a gap in the theological literature, given that theologians have concentrated their efforts on Jesus and the Son and Christology, and Mary and the Holy Spirit and Mariology; but these same theologians have, by and large, given very little time to the figure of Saint Joseph and the Father and Josephology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turn of the millennium in France coincided with a number of tangible crises and apocalyptic discourses, and with the growth of the mass media and global market, further generating and manipulating crisis. In this original, wide-ranging but closely analytical study, Cruickshank contextualizes and reads the work of four influential writers of prose fiction —- Angot, Echenoz, Houellebecq, and Redonnet —- teasing out each one's response to this convergence. She suggests that the recurrent fictional and cultural trope of the turning point has both aesthetic and critical potential. Bringing together analyses spanning literature, thought, and culture, she identifies and critiques the ways in which, on the eve of the twenty-first century, different theoretical and fictional approaches confront the manipulation of crisis discourses. Drawing on a 'long twentieth century' of crisis thinking, Cruickshank counters the perception that a postmodern model of perpetual crisis is culturally dominant, and establ

Book excerpt: Technological development has not only provided mankind with more prosperity, but with increased destructive power as well. These developments, combined with an explosive growth of the world population, have led to mass casualty situations, varying from traffic accidents to war. In the 20th Century over 200 million people were killed as a result of man-made disasters --- a figure unequalled in the history of mankind. It is not surprising, therefore, that a new medical discipline has emerged: disaster medicine. The realization that disasters have effects which cross the traditional boundaries of medical specialisms and nationality, led to the foundation of the International Society of Disaster Medicine (ISDM), which issued an international curriculum on education and training in disaster medicine. As a logical consequence the ISDM decided to develop its curriculum into a handbook, now available to the global community of disaster medicine specialists. This Handbook of Disaster Medicine contains contributions from international experts in the field and will be of value and interest to a wide variety of professionals in the discipline of disaster medicine and management. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue made by collectors for collectors. This year the Spink Maury Catalogue, heir to the prestigious Maury, Ceres and Dallay catalogues, continues its work of research, compiled over generations of philately. It covers all French stamps from 1849 to the present day, offering hundreds of changes – with oddities, new varieties and discoveries presented, as always, in an exceptional way. Included in the new material is the continuation of the monographic studies, presenting a stamp per page with all varieties known until the First World War; a redesign of types Merson and Pasteur; and a specialised part devoted to Marianne de Beaujard, reviewed in depth. In addition the section on current usage stamps (TUC) is fully updated following feedback from our contributors and readers. France has one of the most beautiful philatelic legacies in the world, and we are pleased to be its modest ambassador to the numerous international readers who join us each year. “Layout and coverage are sumptuous … The trite phrase “mine of information” does not begin to do justice to this immense achievement. To any collector of France beyond the elementary stage, this would be a bargain at twice the official retail price … Highly recommended. ….an absolute must for collectors of French stamps…” Michael Round, Journal of the France & Colonies Philatelic Society

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
