Mais alors que les méthodes de classement de coins et d'établissement des séries monétaires ont fait faire d'énormes progrès aux études numismatiques, les productions céramiques moulées, qu'il s'agisse de figurines et reliefs, de lampes, de vases, de terres cuites architecturales ou même de supports de réchauds, sont encore trop rarement abordées avec des méthodes spécifiques qui tiennent compte des procédés particuliers de leur fabrication et de leur diffusion. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume d'Actes d'un colloque international, organisé par le Centre des Recherches Archéologiques de l'Université Charles-de-Gaulles - Lille 3, montrent sur des exemples précis les méthodes d'étude et de classement des productions moulées, et surtout l'apport de ses méthodes à la connaissance des artisanats céramiques et de leurs produits, tant du point de vue technique qu'esthétique, commercial et même social. Ces études de cas apportent ainsi un éclairage précis sur nombre de problèmes liés aux prototypes (créations originales, ou imitation, ou même moulage de créations existantes...) et à la production en série (moulage, surmoulages successifs, durée des productions...) ; aux avatars des productions dérivées (fabrication de nouvelles versions, raisons des transformations, simplifications, dégradations...) ; à la diffusion (commerce des moules ou des objets, surmoulage ou re-crétation, adoption ou rejet de types, signification des signatures...) ; aux artisans (créateurs et copieurs, modeleurs et mouleurs, signatures) et aux ateliers eux-mêmes (installations, outils de production, répertoire, spécialisation ou non dans des types de produits, monopole et concurrence, rapports avec dautres artisanats...)

Book excerpt: A series of kilns at ancient Corinth known as the Tile Works are given final publication in this long-awaited book, based on excavations conducted in 1939 and 1940 (as war was closing in) by Carl Roebuck and Arthur Parsons, and renewed briefly in 1950 by Gladys Weinberg. The artisans at the Tile Works produced not only roof tiles but a whole range of terracotta articles from the 6th to 4th centuries B.C., with one break in production in the late 5th to early 4th century. These products included, at different periods, architectural sculpture and decorated revetments; heavy household pottery such as mortars and lekanai; loomweights; votive furniture such as altars and plaques; and even some fine and semi-fine pottery. The standard of craftsmanship was very high and the artifacts produced found enthusiastic markets in other parts of Greece; as the revetments of roofs at Delphi, for example, and as mortars in the markets of Athens. The Tile Works, therefore, along with the Potters' Quarter, was one of the major and most prolific industrial establishments in ancient Corinth. In this study, the principal features and deposits are first discussed, in order to establish the chronology of the three successive kilns on the site, and to try to relate them to known events in Corinth. The manufactures are then considered, beginning with a discussion of fabrics and techniques of manufacture, then moving on to typology and dating. The study concludes with a presentation of the Corinthian pottery and other artifacts found at the Tile Works but not made there, and a catalogue of terracottas by Charles K. Williams II.

This book offers a new model for envisioning the process of Christianization by looking at the construction of Christianity in the various social and creative worlds active in Egyptian culture during late antiquity. As David Frankfurter shows, members of these different social and creative worlds came to create different forms of Christianity according to their specific interests, their traditional idioms, and their sense of what the religion could offer. Reintroducing the term “syncretism” for the inevitable and continuous process by which a religion is acculturated, the book addresses the various formations of Egyptian Christianity that developed in the domestic sphere, the worlds of holy men and saints’ shrines, the work of craftsmen and artisans, the culture of monastic scribes, and the reimagination of the landscape itself, through processions, architecture, and the potent remains of the past.
