Book Synopsis The Infundibular Cerebrospinal-Fluid Contacting Neurons by : I. Vigh-Teichmann
Download or read book The Infundibular Cerebrospinal-Fluid Contacting Neurons written by I. Vigh-Teichmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infundibular region forms an important part of the hypothalamic peri ventricular grey substance. By morpho-physiological examinations its nuclei were affirmed to be generally significant as high-leveled centres for the regulation of various vegetative functions: heart frequency, blood pressure, intestine motility, feeling of hunger, satiety and thirst, and homeostasis of temperature. Moreover, emotional and sexual reactions as well as the regulation of behaviour depend on the hypothalamic nuclei. Most frequently, researchers dealt with the role of the neurosecretory supraoptic, paraventricular and infundibular nuclei for water and salt household and for the control of endocrine glands. Furthermore, the hypothalamus, especially its ventricular wall was suggested by a series of physiological studies to have different receptory functions like osmoreception, glucose reception, thermoreception etc. (Verney, 1947; Hellon, 1972; Andersson, 1972, a.o.). However, the morphological investigation of the corresponding receptor structures remained far behind for a considerable time. Our present contribution demonstrating a special hypothalamic neuron type seems to be closely connected exactly with this morphological problem.

Book Synopsis Physiology of Photoreceptor Organs by : Michelangelo G.F. Fuortes
Download or read book Physiology of Photoreceptor Organs written by Michelangelo G.F. Fuortes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays which attempts to summarize the recent progress in the field of photoreceptor and retinal physiology. Reflecting the way in which research is organized, each author reports on the studies performed with the techniques with which he is most familiar: morpholo gical, chemical or physiological. The first chapters describe the structure of visual cells and the histological architecture of the retina. Next comes a summary of the laws governing photochemical reactions and a report on the biochemistry of photopigments. Four articles cover the optical properties of invertebrate eyes and the electrophysiology and the interactions of their photoreceptors. These are followed by a discussion of the properties of vertebrate eyes, including chapters on optics, on the electrical responses of rods and cones and on the functional organization of the retina. The final chapter provides an extensive review of retinal biochemistry and metabolism. Even though the experimental approach differs, all studies are directed toward the solution of two basic problems: transduction in the photoreceptors and orga nization (often called "information processing") in the retina. The central problem of photoreceptor cells is to determine how light produces a response. We know that illumination evokes electrical changes and we have recently learned a great deal about the features of these changes. The evidence indicates however that elaborate processes must be interposed between the ab sorption of photons by the pigment and the production of electric currents through the membrane. These intermediary cvents remain to be unraveled.
Book Synopsis Neurohormones and Neurohumors by : J. Ariëns Kappers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having accepted the task to organize, in Amsterdam, an international Congress in behalf of the International Sodety for Neurovegetati'V'e Research such as is held every second year, it occurred to me that it might be worth while to change its usual pattern somewhat. Instead of giving merely the opportunity for l'eading a nurnber of rather short free papers, more or less grouped in many categories, we decided to start with a symposium on a special topic 'to be dealt with from several aspects by a numbe·r of invited speakers, the last day of the congress being only available for short free communications. The central topic for the symposium finally chosen was "Neurohormones and N eurohumors" as this subject is of interest :to many morphologists, physiologists, pharmacologists, neuro-endocrinologists, biochemists and clini cians, and belongs to a rapidly expanding Held of research. Moreover, it appeared to us that there is some confusion about the defini tion of these terms which are not seLdom used indifferently. I hoped that such a symposium would contribute 1to a clearer apprehension of the terms based on morphological, physiological and biochemical criteria as well as to a clearer understanding of some problems involved which will have to be subjects of future investigations.

Book Synopsis Marshall’s Physiology of Reproduction by : G.E. Lamming
Download or read book Marshall’s Physiology of Reproduction written by G.E. Lamming and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 1288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive review available today, Marshall's Physiology of Reproduction is the classic reference source for teachers and researchers of animal reproduction. Internationally recognised leaders in their respective fields provide an analytical synopsis of the area, review current research and outline their philosophical approach to the subject. Volume 3 of the fourth edition reviews the processes of pregnancy and lactation in mammals, incorporating marsupials, non-primate eutherians and primates including man. Book one covers pregnancy from ovulation to pre-parturition, book two reviews fetal physiology, parturition and lactation. The extensive coverage of the physiology of human reproduction and lactation makes this volume a particularly important reference source for researchers in human fertility control, while the review of large animal reproduction is relevant to veterinary and para-veterinary workers.

Book Synopsis Transcription Factors by : Katya Ravid
Download or read book Transcription Factors written by Katya Ravid and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-11-04 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcription Factors Normal and Malignant Development of Blood Cells Katya Ravid and Jonathan Licht The role of transcription factors in activating specific genes in blood cells is an important facet of hematopoiesis. Equally important, however, is the pursuit of genes rearranged and aberrantly activated in leukemias (blood malignancies). Transcription Factors: Normal and Malignant Development of Blood Cells focuses on those major transcription factors involved in activation of lineage-specific gene expression during normal versus malignant development of specific blood lineages, as revealed from gene promoter studies, knockout of transcription factors in mice models, and the identification and characterization of chromosomal rearrangement in human blood leukemias. This complete digest of current transcription factor data offers comprehensive coverage of the myriad of transcription factors in blood cell development, composed by established experts in the field. In addition to updating the reader on the connection between chromosomal translocations involving transcription factors and cellular transformation leading to leukemia, Transcription Factors also reviews such subjects as: * Transcription factors and the megakaryocytic, myeloid, and erythroid lineages * Leukemias due to chromosomal translocations involving gene encoding transcription factors * Oncogenesis and hematopoiesis * In vivo studies of transcription factors implicated in hematopoiesis * And much more Appealing to both the researcher and the clinician in the field of hematology, Transcription Factors is a timely presentation of cell lineage development and sheds light on the processes involved in the development of specific leukemias. Providing insight into the study of transcription factors, readers will gain an understanding of mechanisms that lead to normal lineage commitment and terminal differentiation.
