Book Synopsis A Civil Society by : James Smith Allen
Download or read book A Civil Society written by James Smith Allen and published by . This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Civil Society explores the struggle to initiate women as full participants in the masonic brotherhood that shared in the rise of France's civil society and its "civic morality" on behalf of women's rights. As a vital component of the third sector during France's modernization, freemasonry empowered women in complex social networks, contributing to a more liberal republic, a more open society, and a more engaged public culture. James Smith Allen shows that although women initially met with stiff resistance, their induction into the brotherhood was a significant step in the development of French civil society and its "civic morality," including the promotion of women's rights in the late nineteenth century. Pulling together the many gendered facets of masonry, Allen draws from periodicals, memoirs, and archival material to account for the rise of women within the masonic brotherhood in the context of rapid historical change. Thanks to women's social networks and their attendant social capital, masonry came to play a leading role in French civil society and the rethinking of gender relations in the public sphere.

This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Yearbook of European Legal Studies provides a forum for the scrutiny of significant issues in EU Law, the law of the European Convention on Human Rights, and Comparative Law with a 'European' dimension, and particularly those issues which have come to the fore during the year preceding publication. The contributions appearing in the collection are commissioned by the Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS) Cambridge, a research centre in the Law Faculty of the University of Cambridge specialising in European legal issues. The papers presented are at the cutting edge of the fields which they address, and reflect the views of recognised experts drawn from the University world, legal practice, and the institutions of both the EU and its Member States. Inclusion of the comparative dimension brings a fresh perspective to the study of European law, and highlights the effects of globalisation of the law more generally, and the resulting cross fertilisation of norms and ideas that has occurred among previously sovereign and separate legal orders. The Cambridge Yearbook of European Legal Studies is an invaluable resource for those wishing to keep pace with legal developments in the fast moving world of European integration. Book Synopsis Dream of Fair to Middling Women by : Samuel Beckett
Download or read book Dream of Fair to Middling Women written by Samuel Beckett and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beckett's first 'literary landmark' ( St Petersburg Times) is a wonderfully savoury introduction to the Nobel Prize-winning author. Written in 1932, when the twenty-six-year-old Beckett was struggling to make ends meet, the novel offers a rare and revealing portrait of the artist as a young man. When submitted to several publishers, all of them found it too literary, too scandalous or too risky; it was only published posthumously in 1992. As the story begins, Belacqua - a young version of Molloy, whose love is divided between two women, Smeraldina-Rima and the little Alba - 'wrestles with his lusts and learning across vocabularies and continents, before a final "relapse into Dublin"' ( New Yorker). Youthfully exuberant and Joycean in tone, Dream is a work of extraordinary virtuosity.

Book excerpt: In the Treatise on the Reintegration of Beings, Martinez de Pasqually, the author, reveals the knowledge hidden in the OLD TESTAMENT for the initiate "Elus Coëns" of his time and those of the Traditional Martinist Orders of today. He focuses on what happened to the angels and Adam when they fell. Then he tells human beings what they need to do to regain their original status as Men-God, to become Adam again. As never before, he presents to the readers the different visible and invisible universe regions. They are the divine Immensity, the super celestial Immensity, the celestial Immensity, and the earth. Martinez exposes the interactions between the spirits residing in the different universe regions, including hell and its inhabitants. The content of the Treaty on the Reintegration of Beings stops just before the event of Christ." What should the human being do to regain his original status as Adam, the Man-God? So that he can sit again on the throne, God entitled him. Martinez de Pasqually answers this question in the "Treatise on the Reintegration of Being ".

Download or read book Deathwatch written by Jean Genet and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Deathwatch," Jean Genet's earliest, shortest and most formally straightforward play, was first performed in Paris in 1949. It retains an intense power and makes an excellent introduction to his later dramas - "The Maids," "The Balcony," "The Blacks," "The Screens." The French text of "Deathwatch," published by Gallimard, was extensively altered by Genet during rehearsal; and Bernard Frechtman's translation is of the final 'performance' version, which supersedes the original published text. Three convicts share a cramped prison cell. There is no question as to which of them is the dominant dog in the pack: Green Eyes (Yeux-Verts) has brutally murdered a woman and is to be executed. Lefranc and the younger novice-like Maurice are inside for less grave crimes. But both of them covet Green Eyes' attention, baiting each other in the process, a duel that drives inexorably toward violence.
