Book Synopsis Pour une histoire des Alpes, Moyen Age et Temps Modernes by : Jean-François Bergier
Download or read book Pour une histoire des Alpes, Moyen Age et Temps Modernes written by Jean-François Bergier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alps, as Professor Bergier shows in this selection of his work, should not be considered an impassable barrier, nor an isolated region, but rather as an integral part of the history of Europe. The lowlanders’ typical view of the mountains as fearful heights to be crossed, and the image of those who lived there as existing in a delicate balance with nature, are part only of the story. These articles are particularly concerned with transalpine traffic, and the different routes it took in response to changing circumstances in the lands to south and north, and with the exploitation and use of mountain resources. A number aim also to identify the particularities of the mountain way of life, and its social and political organisation.

Book Synopsis Le commerce du coton en Méditerranée à la fin du Moyen Age by : Jong-Kuk Nam
Download or read book Le commerce du coton en Méditerranée à la fin du Moyen Age written by Jong-Kuk Nam and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the significance of the cotton trade in the Mediterranean traffic in the Later Middle Ages and evaluates its effects on the economy of the Occident. It covers all aspects of the production of, commerce and trade in cotton. The merchants of Venice, Genoa, Barcelona and Florence played the most important role in the cotton trade in the Mediterranean. The massing of supplies of raw material by the merchants of the four maritime cities led to the mass fabrication of cotton products. In this way Western society saw a remarkable growth in the consumption of cotton products in the Later Middle Ages.
Book Synopsis Religion paysanne et religion urbaine en Toscane (c.1280-c.1450) by : Charles M. de la Roncière
Download or read book Religion paysanne et religion urbaine en Toscane (c.1280-c.1450) written by Charles M. de la Roncière and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this volume is that of the establishment and embedding in the Tuscan countryside, and especially round Florence, of the new forms of piety propagated above all by the Mendicant orders. The volume brings together Professor de La Roncière's major articles on this topic, both detailed research studies and syntheses. Against the background of existing religious attitudes, he aims to describe the many new forms of pastoral activity and structures that were instituted, and to provide a picture of what the religious side of their life really meant to these communities. The final articles extend this analysis to include the city of Florence itself, examining the role of the confraternities there and the religious views of its merchants, its socio-economic elite.
Download or read book The Art of the Deal written by Reyerson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval commercial transactions did not occur spontaneously. They were crafted by merchants with the support of numerous personnel on the medieval marketplace: notaries, innkeepers, brokers, transporters, and subordinate personnel of the merchant's entourage. This study introduces the reader to the challenges of trade in the Mediterranean world and to specific market conditions in the Mediterranean French town of Montpellier. A case study of the business of the Cabanis merchants permits an in-depth examination of the facilitation of trade by intermediaries whose activities are traced in the discovery phase of arranging a deal and in its closing and execution. Medieval business practice involved multiple layers of personnel. The complexities of medieval trade are revealed in the new emphasis given to those who assisted merchants in their commercial endeavors.

Book Synopsis Children in the Middle Ages by : Danièle Alexandre-Bidon
Download or read book Children in the Middle Ages written by Danièle Alexandre-Bidon and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we know of the children of the Middle Ages? It is commonly thought that children were of little interest to medieval adults for documentation on childhood is supposedly rare and fragmentary. Daniele Alexandre-Bidon and Didier Lett challenge this assumption in this learned and lively book. Drawing from a wide range of sources -- from archaeological finds to romances from miracle accounts to law codes -- they bring together many glimpses of children in order to form a composite picture. By examining the existence of children in various contexts -- wars, epidemics, the famines that mark both the beginning and end of the Middle Ages -- the authors trace an evolution in the perception of childhood. Children in the Middle Ages offers a multifaceted image of medieval childhood in all the countries of present-day Europe and within all levels of medieval society, from the peasant girl who longed to read to the apprentice scribe doodling pictures on the margins of the manuscript he copied to the young duke of berry, whose bedroom was redecorated each year at Easter, going from red to green, the color of spring. The authors consider children not only within the context the family life, but within the supporting structures of the society -- in school, in business, in the monastery, in extened or foster families. They further demonstrate that despite often difficult living conditions, the great majority of children were surrounded with affection.
Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Food in the Medieval Age by : Massimo Montanari
Download or read book A Cultural History of Food in the Medieval Age written by Massimo Montanari and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe was formed in the Middle Ages. The merging of the traditions of Roman-Mediterranean societies with the customs of Northern Europe created new political, economic, social and religious structures and practices. Between 500 and 1300 CE, food in all its manifestations, from agriculture to symbol, became ever more complex and integral to Europe's culture and economy. The period saw the growth of culinary literature, the introduction of new spices and cuisines as a result of trade and war, the impact of the Black Death on food resources, the widening gap between what was eaten by the rich and what by the poor, as well as the influence of religion on food rituals. A Cultural History of Food in the Medieval Age presents an overview of the period with essays on food production, food systems, food security, safety and crises, food and politics, eating out, professional cooking, kitchens and service work, family and domesticity, body and soul, representations of food, and developments in food production and consumption globally.
