Une approche pluridisciplinaire et une analyse de plusieurs pays représentatifs leur ont permis ce constat : les inégalités perdurent et se renforcent même souvent, sous diverses formes et à des rythmes différents. Les résultats de ce projet montrent bien que les solutions aux problèmes des inégalités générées par la mondialisation présupposent un éclatement de la notion réductrice d'homo oeconomicus, des recherches fouillées sur le terrain et une prise en considération des conditions politiques, historiques et culturelles spécifiques à chaque pays. Les ingrédients d'une redéfinition du social sont ainsi explicités. L'objectivité des convergences, la complémentarité et la richesse des résultats de ces recherches attestent qu'un thème clairement défini (le défi social du développement), des domaines d'étude précis (macroéconomie, éducation, santé et protection sociale), des approches variées (politique, économique, historique, linguistique, sociologique et culturelle), des analyses sur le terrain (Afrique du Sud, Mali, Vietnam, Bulgarie et Suisse) et une coordination " libérale " peuvent déboucher sur d'importants résultats théoriques et pratiques susceptibles d'une interprétation cohérente et d'applications prometteuses. Si l'on entend qu'elle soit adéquate, toute solution politique devra être diversifiée, ciblée et " individualisée ", le monde globalisé n'étant pas, en effet, un système rigide où tous les mécanismes seraient définis une fois pour toutes.
