Book Synopsis Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar, Second Edition by : Dale W. Tomich
Download or read book Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar, Second Edition written by Dale W. Tomich and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic text long out of print, Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar traces the historical development of slave labor and plantation agriculture in Martinique during the period immediately preceding slave emancipation in 1848. Interpreting these events against the broader background of the world-economy, Dale W. Tomich analyzes the importance of topics such as British hegemony in the nineteenth century, related developments of the French economy, and competition from European beet sugar producers. He shows how slaves' adaptation—and resistance—to changing working conditions transformed the plantation labor regime and the very character of slavery itself. Based on archival sources in France and Martinique, Slavery in the Circuit of Sugar offers a vivid reconstruction of the complex and contradictory interrelations among the world market, the material processes of sugar production, and the social relations of slavery. In this second edition, Tomich includes a new introduction in which he offers an explicit discussion of the methodological and theoretical issues entailed in developing and extending the world-systems perspective and clarifies the importance of the approach for the study of particular histories. Book Synopsis The End of Slavery in Africa and the Americas by : Ulrike Schmieder
Download or read book The End of Slavery in Africa and the Americas written by Ulrike Schmieder and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries social and economic relations within the Atlantic space were dominated by slavery and the transatlantic slave trade from Africa to the Americas. By the slowly and arduously achieved end of this trade, slave labour in the Americas was replaced in many cases by other forms of coerced labour of African Caribbean people or Indian, Chinese, African or European immigrants. This book focuses on the transformation of societies after the slave trade and slavery in a comparative intercontinental perspective. It combines micro- and macro-historical approaches and looks at the agency of slaves, missionaries, abolitionists, state officials, seamen and soldiers.
Book Synopsis The Nobility of Toulouse in the Eighteenth Century by : Robert Forster
Download or read book The Nobility of Toulouse in the Eighteenth Century written by Robert Forster and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1960. This is a regional study of the nobility of Toulouse in the eighteenth century. The complex notion of class and the peculiarities of each region in France during the Ancien Régime make it difficult for historians to render a general portrait of the provincial French aristocracy. This study describes the economic interests and investments of noblemen in Toulouse. Some of their activities follow the classic pattern of "seigniorial reaction" and thus illustrate ideas posed by Marc Bloch. Others suggest that the Toulousian gentlemen were conscientious landlords. The Toulousian noble was essentially a gentilhomme campagnard, a country gentleman, in regard to his source of revenue, his outlook, and his mode of living. This book should make clear the full meaning of this expression.

Book Synopsis General History of the Caribbean by : Ibarra Cuesta, Jorge
Download or read book General History of the Caribbean written by Ibarra Cuesta, Jorge and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of Volume IV of the General History of the Caribbean, the Long Nineteenth Century, indicates its range, from the last years of the eighteenth to the first two decades of the twentieth. The volume begins during the hegemony of the European nations and the social and economic dominance of the slave masters. It ends with the hegemony of the United States of America and the economic dominance of American and European agricultural and mercantile corporations. The chapters provide thematic accounts of societies emerging from slavery at different times during the century and also of the circumstances that affected the extent to which these societies were autochthonous within their various territories. The book's survey of this span of 150 years begins with the Haitian Revolution and its repercussions both within the region and outside. It then examines in turn the variety of ways in which the emancipated, their ex-masters and the colonial powers related to each other in the economy, polity and society of various territories; the economy of sugar in decline; the hostility of local landed elites to the welfare of the emancipated, to the ways landless labourers adapted to survive, and to interregional migrations; the social and cultural transformations of new populations from Africa, India and China; the technical innovations in the sugar industry towards the end of the century that differentiate the interests of field owner from factory owner; the decline of white pre-eminence, yet their resistance to claims for autonomy and an end to colonial tutelage

Book Synopsis Freedom Papers by : Rebecca J. Scott
Download or read book Freedom Papers written by Rebecca J. Scott and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1785, a woman was taken from her home in Senegambia and sent to Saint-Domingue in the Caribbean. Those who enslaved her there named her Rosalie. Her later efforts to escape slavery were the beginning of a family's quest, across five generations and three continents, for lives of dignity and equality. Freedom Papers sets the saga of Rosalie and her descendants against the background of three great antiracist struggles of the nineteenth century: the Haitian Revolution, the French Revolution of 1848, and the Civil War and Reconstruction in the United States. Freed during the Haitian Revolution, Rosalie and her daughter Elisabeth fled to Cuba in 1803. A few years later, Elisabeth departed for New Orleans, where she married a carpenter, Jacques Tinchant. In the 1830s, with tension rising against free persons of color, they left for France. Subsequent generations of Tinchants fought in the Union Army, argued for equal rights at Louisiana's state constitutional convention, and created a transatlantic tobacco network that turned their Creole past into a commercial asset. Yet the fragility of freedom and security became clear when, a century later, Rosalie's great-great-granddaughter Marie-José was arrested by Nazi forces occupying Belgium. Freedom Papers follows the Tinchants as each generation tries to use the power and legitimacy of documents to help secure freedom and respect. The strategies they used to overcome the constraints of slavery, war, and colonialism suggest the contours of the lives of people of color across the Atlantic world during this turbulent epoch.
