Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas native James Farmer is one of the “Big Four” of the turbulent 1960s civil rights movement, along with Martin Luther King Jr., Roy Wilkins, and Whitney Young. Farmer might be called the forgotten man of the movement, overshadowed by Martin Luther King Jr., who was deeply influenced by Farmer’s interpretation of Gandhi’s concept of nonviolent protest. Born in Marshall, Texas, in 1920, the son of a preacher, Farmer grew up with segregated movie theaters and “White Only” drinking fountains. This background impelled him to found the Congress of Racial Equality in 1942. That same year he mobilized the first sit-in in an all-white restaurant near the University of Chicago. Under Farmer’s direction, CORE set the pattern for the civil rights movement by peaceful protests which eventually led to the dramatic “Freedom Rides” of the 1960s. In Lay Bare the Heart Farmer tells the story of the heroic civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s. This moving and unsparing personal account captures both the inspiring strengths and human weaknesses of a movement beset by rivalries, conflicts and betrayals. Farmer recalls meetings with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson (for whom he had great respect), and Lyndon Johnson (who, according to Farmer, used Adam Clayton Powell Jr., to thwart a major phase of the movement). James Farmer has courageously worked for dignity for all people in the United States. In this book, he tells his story with forthright honesty. First published in 1985 by Arbor House, this edition contains a new foreword by Don Carleton, director of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin, and a new preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New editions, with translations and introductions. The three narrative lays presented here form a sequel to the authors' French Arthurian Literature IV: Eleven Old French Narrative Lays, published in 2007. No new edition of Ignaure has appeared since 1938 and in the meantime this poem has generated a considerable amount of critical comment, especially as it provides the first full-length example in medieval European literature of the theme of the "Eaten Heart". Oiselet recounts abird's use of three truths as a means of escaping from the clutches of an uncultivated vilain. In the extant manuscripts these truths occur in two different orders, both of which are provided in the present edition. Amours, which follows the progress of a love affair between a nobleman and his beloved, has not been edited since 1878. All three poems challenge our understanding of the term "lay", especially if we regard the lays of Marie de France as defining the principal features of this genre. GLYN S. BURGESS is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Liverpool; LESLIE C. BROOK is Honorary Senior Research Fellow in French at the University of Birmingham.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart Songs: Verses for Christians Long years ago, one day in sunlit May, There burst forth from my heart a spring-time song; I knew not whence it came, but I dared pray That God would take my words, nor deem them wrong; For all was fair that day, below, above, And I had sung my song in praiseful love. The years have passed, and I have oft-times sung, In other springs, and through long winters too, When joys were full, and e'en when tears were wrung From heart and eyes because life's joys were few; What could I do but sing since Christ was mine? Love must praise such as He, through cloud and shine. Some frowned displeasure some more kindly smiled But thought them folly - these my humble lays; This too I deem them, though they were beguiled By love that could not still its tuneful praise: And - since I love - With spirit bowed and awed, I lay my folly 'at the feet of God! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many paths to Jewish ideals, and Moments of the Heart, 2020 Gold winner of the Nonfiction Book Awards and Finalist of the International Book Award, takes readers by the hand in a non-intimidating way to explore Jewish thoughts, choose a kinder life, and be empowered. Our heart has a tremendous influence on how we view life, how we act, and how we build relationships. Just as the heart has four chambers, Moments of the Heart lays out four different types of relationships: with oneself, with others, with the Creator, and once-in-a-life time moments that define people. Each chamber contains several entries introducing topics that stem from Jewish thought and practice that inspire readers to live their best lives, utilizing Hebrew knowledge, wisdom, and word play to dig deep, explore, and bring light to a concept. Native Israeli and educator Dorice Horenstein provides a self-empowering road map that leads readers towards the positive aspects of their lives with a "Lev Moment" opportunity at the end of each entry that sparks questioning, presents tangible tools and activities, and jump starts reflection to aid personal exploration. Approachable and inviting to both secular readers and all walks of faith who wish to cultivate a deeper ethical awareness and spiritual connection, Moments of the Heart serves to encourage everyone to live fully and wholeheartedly?heart, mind, and soul.
