Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nevada: A History of the Silver State has been named a CHOICE Outstanding Title. Michael S. Green, a leading Nevada historian, provides a detailed survey of the Silver State’s past, from the arrival of the early European explorers, to the predominance of mining in the 1800s, to the rise of world-class tourism in the twentieth century, and to more recent attempts to diversify the economy. Of the numerous themes central to Green’s analysis of Nevada’s history, luck plays a significant role in the state’s growth. The miners and gamblers who first visited the state all bet on luck. Today, the biggest contributor to Nevada’s tourist economy, gaming, still relies on that same belief in luck. Nevada’s financial system has generally been based on a “one industry” economy, first mining and, more recently, gaming. Green delves deeply into the limitations of this structure, while also exploring the theme of exploitation of the land and the overuse of the state’s natural resources. Green covers many more aspects of the Silver State’s narrative, including the dominance of one region of the state over another, political forces and corruption, and the citizens’ often tumultuous relationship with the federal government. The book will appeal to scholars, students, and other readers interested in Nevada history.

Book excerpt: "In September 1865 a prospector working in the recently discovered Pahranagat district wrote to the Nevada governor requesting instructions for forming a county in the remote area. The letter was the opening shot in a dispute over the region that involved Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and the federal government for six years and ended only after the loss of sizable territories by Utah and Arizona, the mass abandonment of several settlements along the Muddy River, and the effectivepolitical subordination of the Latter-day Saint community in Meadow Valley." from the introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Following the discovery of placers at Gold Canyon, placer discoveries in Nevada were broadly in three periods: the 1860's to 1880's, when many small deposits throughout the State were discovered and sporadically worked and several large placers were discovered and extensively worked; the short period between 1906 and 1910, when very rich placers were dis covered at Lynn, Battle Mountain, Manhattan, and Round Mountain; the early 1930's, when economic conditions created by the depression caused a renewed interest in placer mining, and many individuals sought, and a few discovered, new placer areas throughout the State. The location of the placers described in this report is shown on plate 1. Very little factual information can be found about the early periods of placer mining in Nevada. For many placers, the only reports available are hearsay estimates of production and speculations about the extent of the placer ground based on remnants of placer pits, shafts, and other workings. Many of the placers said to have had a high production between 1860 and 1890 were worked by Chinese miners who came to Nevada dur ing the building of the railroads and stayed on to work at mining and other activities. The Chinese were reputed to be secretive with their earnings from the placers and did not ship the gold to the mint by Wells Fargo or other shippers. They worked the gravels very thoroughly in areas where American miners did not wish to expend great labor to win the gold. The placers in the Sierra and Spring Valley districts, Pershing County, were worked by Chinese miners; they have a very high estimated production before 1900 and a comparatively low known production since that time. Book excerpt: The book includes six chapters that cover Virginia history from initial settlement through the 20th century plus one that deals with the important role of underwater archaeology. Written by prominent archaeologists with research experience in their respective topic areas, the chapters consider important issues of Virginia history and consider how the discipline of historic archaeology has addressed them and needs to address them . Changes in research strategy over time are discussed , and recommendations are made concerning the need to recognize the diverse and often differing roles and impacts that characterized the different regions of Virginia over the course of its historic past. Significant issues in Virginia history needing greater study are identified.

Book excerpt: "Tonopah, Nevada, lies within the Great Basin region, an immense arid to semiarid area of 400,000 square miles extending between the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains. The environments -- roughly parallel mountain ranges and long desert basins -- makes harsh demands on its inhabitants. This history of Tonopah, which begins with a look at the land and its early inhabitants -- the pre-Archaic and Archaic Indian populations and the Western Shoshone, then vividly describes the arrival of white explorers, the discovery of silver, and the boomtown days of the mining camp....The spirit of the old west, embodied in its inhabitants' sense of adventure and their love of personal freedom, still exists in Tonopah"--Bk. jacket.
