Book excerpt: Pharmacy Law and Practice, Fifth Edition provides a straightforward and useable guide for students, practitioners, academics and others interested in pharmacy law and practice in the United Kingdom. This multi-dimensional book includes discussions of socio-political influences on legal developments to provide greater insight to the reader. It clearly sets out the background to regulatory issues together with simple and practical statements of what a pharmacist has to do to obey the law. As in previous editions, this book discusses topics thematically rather than by statute. It is a unique and reader-friendly guide that boils down the complex or difficult language of the law, describes the reasons behind it, and illustrates the application to pharmacy practice. Thoroughly updated to reflect regulatory and legal developments in areas including employment law, online transactions and internet pharmacies, non-medical prescribing and more Takes an intuitive, problem-solving approach and discusses topics thematically rather than by statute to show how all of the larger pieces fit together The electronic version of this book contains valuable links to provide readers with the most current information in a rapidly changing subject area

Book Synopsis Forging a Poison Prevention and Control System by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Forging a Poison Prevention and Control System written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poisoning is a far more serious health problem in the U.S. than has generally been recognized. It is estimated that more than 4 million poisoning episodes occur annually, with approximately 300,000 cases leading to hospitalization. The field of poison prevention provides some of the most celebrated examples of successful public health interventions, yet surprisingly the current poison control "system" is little more than a loose network of poison control centers, poorly integrated into the larger spheres of public health. To increase their effectiveness, efforts to reduce poisoning need to be linked to a national agenda for public health promotion and injury prevention. Forging a Poison Prevention and Control System recommends a future poison control system with a strong public health infrastructure, a national system of regional poison control centers, federal funding to support core poison control activities, and a national poison information system to track major poisoning epidemics and possible acts of bioterrorism. This framework provides a complete "system" that could offer the best poison prevention and patient care services to meet the needs of the nation in the 21st century.

This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.
Book Synopsis Pharmacy Law and Practice by : Jonathan Merrills
Download or read book Pharmacy Law and Practice written by Jonathan Merrills and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core pharmacy law is based upon three major pieces of legislation (Medicines Act, Misuse of Drugs Act, and Poisons Act) plus the legislation relating to pharmacy as a profession (Pharmacy Act and Royal Charter). In addition there is a variety of legislation that impacts upon the practice of pharmacy -- such as health and safety, data protection and retail legislation. The core pharmacy legislation is summarised in the Medicines Ethics and Practice (MEP) Guide that is published once a year and supplied free of charge to all practising pharmacists and via schools of pharmacy, to all pharmacy graduates. This guide is intended as a working guide to the law but it is also the primary reference source for the professions Code of Ethics. *Describes the law rather than just listing the regulations and related cases *Focuses on law that applies to the community pharmacist *Applicable for day-to-day use by the community pharmacist and pharmacy students
