Book excerpt: The 100+ page study presents highly detailed data from a survey of 66 North American law libraries, including 24 law school libraries, 19 courthouse of other government law libraries, 3 private company law libraries and 20 law firm libraries. The report helps its readers to answer questions such as: how much are law libraries currently spending and plan to spend on print forms of books, treatises, digests, loose-leaf services, directories, legal encyclopedias, journals, newspapers, magazines and more. What guides print culling philosophies? What mistakes have librarians made in their print purchasing or print reduction programs? What is the role of surveying library patrons about their print vs. online preferences? Are some areas resistant to print culling? Which ones? What has been the impact of interlibrary loan and other forms of print materials sharing on print spending and title maintenance? The study looks at both primary and secondary legal materials as well as non-legal subject materials.Just a few of the report's many findings are that:* The cumulative 2-year drop in spending on print resources from 2014-2016 by the law firms in the sample is expected to be 22.6%.* For small law firm libraries the number of subscriptions to print journals went from 66.67 to 51.67 and then to an anticipated 45 over the three year period, a cumulative 2-year drop of 32%.* Primary works accounted for a mean of 35.53% of spending on print legal materials with a median of 30% and a range of 5% to 90%. For law school libraries, print primary materials accounted for 54% of the total print materials budget, a much higher percentage than for law firm libraries 28%, or government law libraries, 32.86%.

Book excerpt: This study looks at law library spending plans for a broad range of print resources including both primary and secondary legal materials in many formats, books, looseleaf services, legal encyclopedias, journals, newspapers and magazines and other information vehicles. The study provides highly precise information from a sample of 32 North American law libraries of spending levels in 2023, 2024 and anticipated for 2025 in each of these areas. The study also looks at spending on non-legal themed print materials and at issues such as the amount of space used to house and store the print collection in 2023, 2024 and anticipated for 2025. The study gives its readers a highly detailed sense of the plans that law libraries have for their print collections, including comprehensive spending and preference data.Data in the report is broken out by the type and size of the law library and by the personal age of the survey respondent (which appears to impact spending decisions). Just a few of this 100-page report's many findings are that: ¿Mean spending on print materials by the law libraries in the sample was $329,568 in 2024, a drop of 1.71% from 2023. ¿The mean amount of space used by large law firms libraries in the sample to house their print collections is expected to have fallen by 50% by 2025 relative to the level in 2023.¿Law firm libraries with fewer than 150 lawyers culled 21% of the book collection each year, the highest in the sample among types of law library; law school libraries culled the lowest percentage, 2.75% each year.¿Law school library spending on print materials rose in the past year. ¿Courthouse libraries in the sample used a mean of 1,390 square feet of office space to house their print collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the digital revolution has touched every aspect of law librarianship, perhaps nowhere has the effect been more profound than in the area of collection development. Many of the materials law libraries traditionally collected in print form are now available in electronic format. Digital technology has affected the way we select, order, and process legal materials. The World Wide Web has created an explosion of both commercial and private online publishing. The cost of electronic publishing has caused many traditional law book publishers to sell their companies rather than invest in the needed technologies to compete in the 21st century. Small publishers and book jobbers have been forced to reinvent themselves. The amount of legal information available and its costs continue to soar. Law Library Collection Development in the Digital Age deals with these and other issues related to law library collection development. Chapters range from the theoretical to the practical. Inspired by Penny Hazleton’s seminal paper “How Much of Your Print Collection is Really on Lexis or Westlaw?” the editors and chapter authors of Law Library Collection Development in the Digital Age endeavor to expand on professor Hazleton’s work, with examinations of: the role of law libraries in strategic planning for distance learning Web mirror sites trust vs. antitrust issues access vs. ownership issues how law libraries deal with electronic court records, dockets, and filings the growth of e-journals as they relate to legal publishing how the Hein Greenslips and Blackwell North America’s Bookservice cover legal materials past, present, and future roles of specialized book jobbers and more! Anyone interested in law librarianship or the information industry will find this book informative and useful. Make it a part of your professional collection today.
