Cray Dawson’s earned his gunman’s reputation fighting side-by-side with his pal Lawrence Shaw (the fastest gun alive.) Now that Dawson is the new Sheriff of Somo Santos that reputation alone keeps most criminals away from his Texas hometown. But it doesn’t stop the bank-robbing Walker Gang for long. After robbing and pillaging a neighboring town, they soon come upon a way they think will weaken Dawson and leave and his town unprotected. Then, in a New Orleans teeming with drunks and blue uniforms, he sold a horse to a well-bred lady. It was the biggest mistake of his career .... He hit Fort Lincoln with a belly full of wounds and minus a boot. His horse had been stolen, and he’d stolen it back—along with some bootleg crackers. All in all, it hadn’t been a pleasant trip through the dreaded Black Hills. But at least Jeston Nash—for the time being calling himself Beatty—hadn’t drowned. Now he fully intended to fulfill a promise: to deliver an unridable horse called Honest Bob to a woman named Custer. The trouble was, the wife of General George Armstrong Custer, Elizabeth, wasn’t very interested in the horse she’d persuaded Nash to deliver. In fact, Mrs. Custer was on the warpath. So were the Sioux—and General Custer’s commanders in Washington. Suddenly, Nash finds himself in the middle of the most dangerous kind of fight: a marital squabble. Before he knows it he’s riding alongside a hardheaded, buffalo-hunting, blond-haired general who’s sure glory awaits them—at a place called Little Big Horn ....

Hoping to lie low in the mountains of the Northwest, Jeston and his partner, Quiet Jack, find themselves on a journey into the dark heart of human nature—and deadly animal instinct Jeston Nash is used to dodging bullets, but when a hired thug’s rotten remark gets under his skin, he can’t let it go—and he makes himself an instant enemy aboard a snowbound train owned by the sleaze’s boss, Ben Larr. A rich son-of-a-gun hell-bent on getting the grizzly who robbed him of a leg, Larr is a fouler piece of work than the usual brand of lowlifes Nash comes up against. When Larr blackmails Nash into leading his hunt, Nash discovers the killers of man in Larr’s twisted domain—a netherworld filled with violence and drugs, obsession and revenge. Nash finds himself face-to-face with Laura, Larr’s gorgeous, murderously manipulative wife, and one savage grizzly, a man-killer straight from the jaws of hell .... In a tale sparked with his trademark wit and bull’s-eye historical detail, Ralph Cotton captures the essence of the Old West in the adventures of his extraordinary outlaw hero, Jeston Nash.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Latin American context, legal pluralism is often depicted as a dichotomy between customary law and national law. In addition, the use of customary law alongside national law is frequently portrayed as a vehicle of resistance. This book argues that, because ordinary Indians are not positively biased in favor of customary law per se, a heterogeneity of legal practices can be observed on a daily basis, which consequently undermines the commonly held view of customary law as a "counter-hegemonic strategy", even if, on other socio-geographical levels, this thinking in terms of resistance holds true. Based on qualitative research, the work analyzes how internal conflicts among indigenous inhabitants of the Ecuadorian highlands are being settled in a situation of formal legal pluralism, and what can be learned from this in terms of Indian-state relationships. It is shown that, on a local level, the phenomenological dimension of legal pluralism can be termed "interlegality." On a macro level, ontological assumptions underscore that legal pluralism is still seen as a dichotomy between customary and national law. Multidisciplinary in nature, the book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of Legal Pluralism, Cultural Anthropology and Latin American Studies.

Book excerpt: A soldier gets swept up in the gold rush in this western from Charles G. West.... Tanner Bland leaves his Virginia home on foot to fight for Dixie and rides back on a fine horse. Most folks would call that a profit—until they consider his loss. With everyone thinking the soldier dead, his younger brother marries Tanner’s fiancée hours before he returns. His home no longer his own, Tanner heads west to join an old army pal and hit the gold mines of Montana. But the wagon train the men join is not what they are hoping for. In the train with them are the four Leach brothers, each one meaner than the next. Now, if Tanner and his buddy want to make it to Montana alive, they’ll have to keep their enemies close…and their weapons closer. “The West as it really was—savage, heroic, and unforgettable.”—Ralph Compton

This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original work demonstrates the fundamental role of customary law for the realization of Indigenous peoples’ human rights and for sound national and international legal governance. The book reviews the legal status of customary law and its relationship with positive and natural law from the time of Plato up to the present. It examines its growing recognition in constitutional and international law and its dependence on and at times strained relationship with human rights law. The author analyzes the role of customary law in tribal, national and international governance of Indigenous peoples’ lands, resources and cultural heritage. He explores the challenges and opportunities for its recognition by courts and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including issues of proof of law and conflicts between customary practices and human rights. He throws light on the richness inherent in legal diversity and key principles of customary law and their influence in legal practice and on emerging notions of intercultural equity and justice. He concludes that Indigenous peoples’ rights to their customary legal regimes and states’ obligations to respect and recognize customary law, in order to secure their human rights, are principles of international customary law, and as such binding on all states. At a time when the self-determination, land, resources and cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples are increasingly under threat, this accessible book presents the key issues for both legal and non-legal scholars, practitioners, students of human rights and environmental justice, and Indigenous peoples themselves.

Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this convenient resource provides systematic information on how Brazil deals with the role religion plays or can play in society, the legal status of religious communities and institutions, and the legal interaction among religion, culture, education, and media. After a general introduction describing the social and historical background, the book goes on to explain the legal framework in which religion is approached. Coverage proceeds from the principle of religious freedom through the rights and contractual obligations of religious communities; international, transnational, and regional law effects; and the legal parameters affecting the influence of religion in politics and public life. Also covered are legal positions on religion in such specific fields as church financing, labour and employment, and matrimonial and family law. A clear and comprehensive overview of relevant legislation and legal doctrine make the book an invaluable reference source and very useful guide. Succinct and practical, this book will prove to be of great value to practitioners in the myriad instances where a law-related religious interest arises in Brazil. Academics and researchers will appreciate its value as a thorough but concise treatment of the legal aspects of diversity and multiculturalism in which religion plays such an important part.
