According to Customs and Border Patrol officials, they have the ability to interdict and apprehend more than 80 percent of the illegal traffic on the Southwest Border, but the Border Patrol's numbers only take into account what they see, and fail to include all activity. In 2000, when a wave of Mexican economic migrants came to the United States in search of employment, Border Patrol apprehended 1.6 million people. There was little organization, which made them relatively easy to catch. Now, the entire border is controlled by the Mexican drug cartels. The drug cartels control the border in the same way that most prisons are controlled by the inmates. Nothing moves along this border without their permission, and illegal aliens and narcotics are simply 2 lines of business within that same organization. For years, the Department of Homeland Security has been trying to sell the American people a false narrative that the border is more secure than ever. Local law enforcement, business and community leaders, ranchers and residents who live along the border know better.
