Book excerpt: This updated handbook provides reliable guidance on what to do next and offers practical, no-frills advice about what to do to counter the day-to-day challenges and outright calamities that make up the first-line leader’s work life. Perhaps even more important, it offers time-proven recommendations on how to prevent a bothersome situation from escalating into crisis proportions in the first place. It will prove equally useful to the veteran, novice or future law enforcement supervisor. Its sound advice will help him retain his emotional as well as physical and moral health in a real-world environment that seems to become more challenging every day. It will help him to lead and bring his people to share his practices and beliefs in doing a very critical job the right way. Just as it should be, the handbook is short on theory and long on “how to” advice. It is literally a resource that the supervisor can tuck into an equipment bag or otherwise keep close at hand. It likewise will aid him in carrying out the very practical tasks of communicating effectively; evaluating employee performance, correcting inappropriate behavior and helping his officers survive both on the street and in the police organization. A new chapter has been added on the topic of how to lead successfully during the current, very challenging environment for law enforcement, entitled “How to Lead During Challenging Times.” Summary boxes have been interspersed throughout the text that emphasize important points for police leaders to remember. Meanwhile, the handbook will assist the law enforcement leader in working well with his own boss and planning his own career. There is no job description in the world quite like that of first-line law enforcement boss. The job is as unique as it is difficult and vital to the success of any successful police organization. This book will help them become even better at their very important job.

Book excerpt: Jottings is a collection of poems written over a period of twenty years. Most of the poems in this collection are contextual. Written in different genres of poetry, while some of the poems appear as general statements but having a bearing on nature. Others are responses of the poet to social/economic/political issues and those related to women. The poems reflect the mood and views of the poet. While poems like "A Symbol of Beauty," "Horizon," "Loss" appear simple, they have an underlying meaning, the philosophy of life. In poems like "Disgusting" and "To a Brave Son," the poet points an accusing finger at the powers that be for the sorry state of affairs. "Love" brings out the true meaning of the word while describing the different stages in the life of a person. The life of a girl child form the theme of "Who Am I." The hapless condition of young women and children, especially girls, are brought to fore in "To Ponnus and Malalas" and "Sadist Minds." "Down Memory Lane" goes back in time. There are also satirical poems that take potshots at and ridicule the superstitious and the believers like "Light That Darkens," "In Fool's Paradise," "Onam," and "In Your Name." Again, while "Bapu" is on Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals, it ridicules all those who earned fame in his name. While "Motherland's Boys" talks of the deterioration of India-Pakistan relations, "How Many More Children Will You Kill" chides Israelis and Palestinians for deaths of innocent children. "An Unknown Past" looks at an old person struggling in vain to open the locked doors of her memory. There are also poems that talk of a personal loss and some that snub individuals that make haughty statements. All the illustrations in the book are by cartoonist and animator Mr. Swathi Jaikumar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The police are perhaps the most visible representation of government. They are charged with what has been characterized as an "impossible" mandate -- control and prevent crime, keep the peace, provide public services -- and do so within the constraints of democratic principles. The police are trusted to use deadly force when it is called for and are allowed access to our homes in cases of emergency. In fact, police departments are one of the few government agencies that can be mobilized by a simple phone call, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are ubiquitous within our society, but their actions are often not well understood. The Oxford Handbook of Police and Policing brings together research on the development and operation of policing in the United States and elsewhere. Accomplished policing researchers Michael D. Reisig and Robert J. Kane have assembled a cast of renowned scholars to provide an authoritative and comprehensive overview of the institution of policing. The different sections of the Handbook explore policing contexts, strategies, authority, and issues relating to race and ethnicity. The Handbook also includes reviews of the research methodologies used by policing scholars and considerations of the factors that will ultimately shape the future of policing, thus providing persuasive insights into why and how policing has developed, what it is today, and what to expect in the future. Aimed at a wide audience of scholars and students in criminology and criminal justice, as well as police professionals, the Handbook serves as the definitive resource for information on this important institution.

They integrate management and statistical analysis functions, public and business administration functions, and applications of psychology, natural science, physical fitness, and marksmanship. They also assimilate theories of education, organizational behavior, economics, law and public policy, and many others. Modern law enforcement is a blend of both theoretical knowledge and applied practice that continuously changes through time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As figureheads of the most visible segment of criminal justice, today’s police administrators are forced to tackle challenges never faced by their predecessors. Heightened local and global threats, advanced technologies, and increased demands for procedural transparency require new levels of flexibility, innovative thinking, and the ability to foster and maintain relationships within the community. It is more crucial than ever to recruit and retain capable leaders to guide law enforcement agencies at this pivotal time in history. Covering areas such as leadership in policing, use of force, and understanding how the law shapes police practice, Handbook of Police Administration examines the key topics that must be considered by law enforcement professionals. Recognizing that police leaders need the skills and traits of a politician, accountant, attorney, field lieutenant, and futurist, the authors cover a variety of contemporary issues surrounding police administration and management. Divided into five thematic sections, it considers the legal aspects of overseeing a public sector organization, as well as how research, technology, and training can assist modern police leaders in performing their duties more effectively and efficiently. The book covers problematic issues such as officers accepting gratuities, undercover work, and the time criteria required for promotional consideration. It concludes with a chapter comparing administrative issues in Australia with many of the subjects previously addressed with regard to U.S. protocol. Using a range of perspective, differing viewpoints, and controversial issues, Handbook of Police Administration provides a springboard to stimulate discussion at the cutting-edge of debate in the dynamic field of policing.
