Book excerpt: This text introduces students to the study of law from a sociological perspective by focusing on four themes: the relationship between law and society; law in everyday life; the role of race, class and gender in the legal system; and current political debates that are connected to law. While explaining the essentials elements of law, and drawing on scholarly literature and relevant cases, the author does not advocate for normative views on law and the legal system. The text compares laws across various societies, discusses international law, and demonstrates how the laws of certain countries affect those of others--providing readers with insights into the nature of law within any society.

Book excerpt: " . . . a distinct, broad, but compelling framework for examining a variety of laws and social policies." —Legal Studies Forum " . . . a very rich volume that has something to offer to many different tastes . . . an excellent companion to the main textbook in a large undergraduate law-and-society course." —Contemporary Sociology No issue has captured the imagination of social scientists and legal scholars more consistently than the creation of laws. The political implications of the study of law and society often create ideological diatribes with little attention to empirical detail. In this book, legal scholars, sociologists, political scientists, and anthropologists join in an attempt to develop and refine a structural theory of law.

Book excerpt: This is a timely new edition of Sharyn L Roach Anleu′s invaluable introduction to the sociology of law and its role as a social institution and social process. Discussing current theory and key empirical research from a diverse range of perspectives Law and Social Change gives relevant examples, from various cultures and societies, to provide a sociological view which goes beyond more jurisprudential approaches to law and society. The book: • provides coverage of major classic and contemporary social theories of law • is informed by empirical research drawn from several countries/societies • includes up to date and relevant examples This thoroughly updated edition engages with modern scholarship, and recent research, on globalization whilst also looking at related issues such as the internationalization of law and human rights. It explores recent reforms at local and national levels, including issues of migration and refugees, the regulation of ′anti-social′ behaviour, and specialist or problem solving courts and also provides a clear, accessible introduction to research methods used in the socio-legal field. Direct and wide-ranging this text will be essential reading for students and researchers on social science and law courses and in particular, those taking sociology, legal theory, criminology and criminal justice studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume provides a new interpretation and synthesis of network exchange theory in an effort to contribute to a neo-Weberian economic sociology. Arguing against commonly held assumptions about network exchange theory and its interpretation of all social actions as economic exchanges, Zafirovski seeks to explain these processes by employing an interdisciplinary approach and by examining the impact of social and institutional structures on market-economic exchange. The author argues that economic structure, processes, and actions are the outcomes of social action and institutions, not the other way around. This rehabilitation of economic sociology begins with a reconsideration of the character, scope, and development of the field. The author then grounds his sociological approach to economic exchange in social action and structure before examining the role of social motivations in economic exchange. He then examines the political structuration, the cultural constitution, and the social construction of economic exchange and exchange cycles. The book concludes with a discussion of the character and variation of economic exchange in comparative social systems and the relationships of exchange, economic development, and social variables. This unique and persuasive book is an important contribution to the study of economic sociology and sociological theory.

Book Synopsis Law, Society, and Political Action by : Thomas Mathiesen

Download or read book Law, Society, and Political Action written by Thomas Mathiesen and published by London ; New York : Academic Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Breaking down into three distinct but related parts, it enters first into a study of the sociology of law. For its starting point this section contends that the law is shaped and reshaped by ever-changing material structures in society. Simultaneously the law works back on these structures to reinforce and conserve them. This materialist thesis is substantiated by an analysis of legal developments in a series of political fields: the development of penal law, financial law and labour protection law amongst others. A close scrutiny of the social organization of the 'legal superstructure', including an amusing and telling analysis of the modes of behaviour of those at the summit of the legal profession, concludes the first section. The dependence of law on the material structure of society cannot be satisfactorily accounted for, however, without also examining the relationship between the law and other systems of ideas, and between those ideas and the social formation in which they appear. Accordingly the central part of this book considers also religion, art and science. The author distinguishes between 'superconstructing' or conserving idea systems and those which enter into a truly dialectical relationship with the material structure to produce a new totality. He argues that in the late capitalist social formation the law is superconstructing whereas science has a dialectical relationship with the world. It remains, however, a political question whether or not dialectical ideas systems are desirable, that is, repression-abolishing. In the final section Mathiesen identifies reform or revolution as a false dichotomy which must be transcended. These chapters are aimed at revitalizing a flagging radical political movement through coherent and cogent discussion of organization and political strategy. In this part of the book the author developes further the notion of the 'unfinished political movement', first conceived in his earlier work The Politics of Abolition (Martin Robertson, 1974). This volume has direct relevance to a broad field of social and political scientists and workers. In particular it should be read by sociologists, social workers, criminologists, lawyers and law students. It will also be of value as text material for courses in the sociology of law and jurisprudence." -- Backcover.
