Book excerpt: Though slavery was widespread and antislavery sentiment rare in Alabama, there emerged a small loyalist population, mostly in the northern counties, that persisted in the face of overwhelming odds against their cause. Margaret M. Storey’s welcome study uncovers and explores those Alabamians who maintained allegiance to the Union when their state seceded in 1861—and beyond. Storey’s extensive, groundbreaking research discloses a socioeconomically diverse group that included slaveholders and nonslaveholders, business people, professionals, farmers, and blacks. By considering the years 1861–1874 as a whole, she clearly connects loyalists’ sometimes brutal wartime treatment with their postwar behavior.

Little has been written about the men who enlisted from Winston in the Confederacy. Surprisingly, the number of Winston County Confederates almost matched the number of those who supported the Union. Many important Confederate officers hailed from Winston County. The book begins with an essay describing the Forgotten Winston County Confederates. Following is an alphabatized list of all Confederate soldiers associated with Winston County including those that moved in after the war. Information includes service records, pension applications, birth, marriage, and death information. The book is filled with rare photos and obituaries. Additional information includes articles on Captain White's Mail Guard and the Winston County Rough and Ready Volunteers. Full name index. This book is important to students of Winston County History.

This book attempts to identify all of the Confederate soldiers originating from the area which became Cullman County, as well as those who migrated to the county after the War. The book also contains rare first person accounts of the war as told by Cullman County residents George Martin Holcombe and Elijah Wilson Harper and printed in the Cullman Alabama Tribune. This book is important to the genealogy and history of Cullman County and contains much previously unpublished information on the old soldiers. It contains service records, pension applications, births, deaths, marriages, and obituaries.

Book excerpt: Between March 1862 and May 1865, Mississippian William Pitt Chambers kept a journal of his infantry service during the War Between the States. Having been a school teacher for several years prior to enlistment, he was blessed with writing ability not typical of the majority of his Southern comrades, and used this talent to record observations and experiences while fighting in the ranks of two different Confederate armies. Belonging to Company B, 46th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry, Chambers served more than two years as a sergeant, as well as sergeant major and acting adjutant of his regiment. Physical and spiritual strength derived from deep religious convictions and belief in the Confederacy's ideals helped him through many trying ordeals, especially in dealing with the battlefield deaths of friends and his own wounding in the battle of Allatoona, Ga., on October 5, 1864. While his account provides an open window to the hopes, dreams and fears of one Confederate enlisted man, it also chronicles nearly the entire history of his company and regiment through three years of daily life in camp, on the march and in battles fought in Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama.-- Inside jacket flap.

Here are hundreds of direct sources--governmental, archival, agency, online--that will help you access information vital to your investigation. Tracing Your Alabama Past sets out to identify the means and the methods for finding information on people, places, subjects, and events in the long and colorful history of this state known as the crossroads of Dixie. It takes researchers directly to the sources that deliver answers and information. This comprehensive reference book leads to the wide array of essential facts and data--public records, census figures, military statistics, geography, studies of African American and Native American communities, local and biographical history, internet sites, archives, and more. For the first time Alabama researchers are offered a how-to book that is not just a bibliography. Such complex sources as Alabama's biographical/genealogical materials, federal land records, Civil WarÂ-era resources, and Native American sources are discussed in detail, along with many other topics of interest to researchers seeking information on this diverse Deep South state. Much of the book focuses on national sources that are covered elsewhere only in passing, if at all. Other books only touch on one subject area, but here, for the first time, are directions to the Who, What, When, Where, and Why.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a closeness perhaps unique to siblings orphaned young, Orlando and Artimisia “Missie” Palmer exchanged intimate letters throughout their lives. These letters (interspersed with additional letters from Oliver Kennedy, the Palmers’ first cousin) offer a clear and entertaining window into the life and times of a junior Confederate officer serving in the Western Theater of the Civil War. Though he initially felt Americans would see “the folly and the madness” of going to war, Orlando enlisted as a private in what would become Company H of the First (later Fifteenth) Arkansas Infantry, informing his sister that he had volunteered “not for position, not for a name, but from patriotic motivation.” However, he was ambitious enough to secure an appointment as Maj. Gen. William Joseph Hardee’s personal secretary; he then rose to become his regiment’s sergeant major, his company’s first lieutenant, and later captain and brigade adjutant. Soldier letters typically report only what can be observed at the company level, but Palmer’s high-ranking position offers a unique view of strategic rather than tactical operations. Palmer’s letters are not all related to his military experience, though, and the narrative is enhanced by his nuanced reflections on courtship customs and personal relationships. For instance, Palmer frequently attempts to entertain Missie with witticisms and tales of his active romantic life: “We have so much to do,” he quips, “that we have no time to do anything save to visit the women. I am in love with several dozen of them and am having a huge time generally.” The Folly and the Madness adds depth to the genre of Civil War correspondence and provides a window into the lives of ordinary southerners at an extraordinary time.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a remarkably detailed history of the state of Alabama from the time of the Spanish explorer Desoto's arrival in 1540 to the year of its original publication in 1872. Containing elements that will appeal to the genealogist and historian alike, Brewer's "Alabama" is arranged in three parts. The first eleven chapters comprise an outline history of the state, with pages devoted to exploration, the Indian population, natural resources, economic development, Alabama's territorial period, and state politics in general. Included in this section is a complete listing of Alabama governors, supreme court and circuit court judges, chancellors, attorney-generals, secretaries of state, and U.S. and Confederate Senators and Representatives, giving the name of the office holder and dates of service. The middle section of the book, the longest, contains a chapter on each of Alabama's sixty-five counties. Each chapter profiles the county's formation and organization, economic base, chief roads and water courses, biographical and family sketches of prominent citizens of the county, and a complete list of that county's state senators and representatives. The final section of this auspicious work recounts Alabama's involvement in the recently concluded Civil War, and it features sketches of every infantry and cavalry regiment to have served in the Confederacy. The sketches invariably recount the organization of the regiment, campaigns or battles fought in, and the names of the regiment's field and staff officers. An index to the 600 principal subjects of the biographical sketches may be found at the end of this extremely detailed volume.
