Book Synopsis Asdell's Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction by : Virginia Douglass Hayssen

This book was released on 1993 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of the second edition of Sydney A. Asdell's widely used Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction in 1964, the field of reproductive physiology has expanded dramatically. Accordingly, this revision adopts a different structure from previous editions, substituting empirical delineations for physiological interpretations. With the emphases now on a presentation of the published facts of mammalian reproduction, it provides a thorough compilation of what is known about the basic reproductive biology of each of the 4300 mammalian species. To gather information, the authors examined more than 20,000 publications, dating up to 1992. They used primary sources as much as possible, supplementing them with English translations of Russian, Finnish, Chinese, and Japanese journals. The data are presented in taxonomic order. Each familial account summarizes the pattern of reproduction for the family and provides lists of citations arranged by topic of the literature on the endocrinology, reproductive anatomy, and reproductive physiology of the family. Following each account is a tabular listing of species-specific data for neonatal mass and size, weaning mass and size, litter size, age at sexual maturity, estrous cycle length, gestation length, lactation length, number of litters per year, and seasonality of reproduction. For each of these reproductive variables, the range of data gleaned from the literature is given, together with the source of each value listed.Virginia Hayssen is Assistant Professor of Biology at Smith College. Ari Van Tienhoven is Professor of Animal Physiology, Emeritus, at Cornell University. Ans Van Tienhoven assisted in the compilation of data for the book.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A population of Spermophilus beecheyi was studied to determine patterns of individual spacing, behavioral interactions among different sex and age classes, and the relationship between aspects of S. beecheyi social structure and sociality to those of other sciurids. Research was conducted on a population of squirrels living in an abandoned rock quarry on Finley National Wildlife Refuge near Corvallis, Oregon. Squirrels were trapped, marked with dye, and observed during March through October, 1977, and March, 1978. The location of each squirrel and the type and location of any encounters were recorded during 325 hours of observation. The types of encounters most often observed were approach/ withdrawal, greeting/investigation, play, displacement, aggression, and the male-initiated paw push. The two major activity peaks occurred in March, corresponding to courtship activity and male defense of breeding territories, and in July, corresponding to the activity of juveniles. The seasonal activity cycle of S. beecheyi had five phases: breeding, pre-emergence of young, litter, pre-hibernation, and hibernation. distinct time of dispersal was determined. The population consisted of approximately twice as many adult females as adult males. Both sexes had overlapping home ranges, but their centers of activity were usually separate from the activity centers of other members of the same sex. Home ranges were retained from year to year by the same squirrel. The most social sciurids are those which exhibit a high frequency of cohesive behaviors, such as greeting and mutual grooming. The S. beecheyi at Finley National Wildlife Refuge tended to be tolerant of other individuals, but did not maintain a high level of cohesive behavior within the population. The social structure of S. beecheyi was intermediate to the more social S. columbianus and the more solitary S. franklinii.
