Book excerpt: Purpose: This paper analyzes whether Latinos’ attitudes toward mental health services (MHS) serve as a protective factor or barrier to MHS utilization. Research question: How does income level, education level, affiliation with the Catholic religion, age, immigration status, and gender affect Latino’s attitudes toward mental health services. Methods: Through convenience sampling, data was collected using paper and pencil surveys at a Catholic church in rural Santa Paula, CA. Results: Analyses suggest that there is no significant gender difference in regards to Latinos’ perception of MHS helpfulness. Similarly, analyses of various demographic variables continuously counter the literature. Discussion: It is possible that by integrating MHS programs into churches, the rate of positive attitudes toward MHS might increase.

In 2008, this group numbered over 47 million; by 2050, the population is expected to triple, reaching 133 million. Traditionally, Latinos have immigrated to large urban centers (e.g., New York, Los Angeles) that over long periods of time developed a complex infrastructure to receive new immigrants. Increasingly, new Spanish-speaking immigrants are moving into areas of the country previously unfamiliar to them. Although urban co-ethnic communities continue to be the destination of many newcomers, immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and South America in pursuit of low-skilled labor opportunities are settling in small towns and rural areas of the South and Midwest. This new demographic trend has resulted in the creation of the term "new growth communities," which refers to small rural areas that are now home to a small but rapidly growing Hispanic population. Unfortunately, these communities, which are now present in many states across the country (e.g., Illinois, North Carolina), lack the infrastructure necessary to meet the needs of Latino immigrants (e.g., access to health care, immigration assistance, and breaking down language barriers). The lack of an infrastructure and the lack of an established ethnic community to facilitate the assimilation of new immigrants present an ongoing challenge, especially in the area of Latino mental health. The volume focuses on dealing with systemic issues and on providing innovative ideas for development of infrastructure of services. This text will advance ways to understand and ameliorate mental health disparities both from research and experiential perspectives.

Mental health stigma is an additional barrier for Latino adults to seek and access mental health services, among other barriers. Identifying factors that decrease mental health stigma among this population can help bridge this gap. Research Question: What are the factors that contribute to reduce the mental health stigma among Latino adults? Methods: A Systematic Literature Review was completed. Results: Findings suggested that adapting a study's approach with the participants culture and language could assist to change the attitudes towards mental health among Latino adults. In addition, offering different mental health service approaches to Latinos could assist for Latinos to participate in services (e.g. telephone, online, face to face) and decrease their mental health stigma. Finally, community-based settings have played a key role in Latinos accessing mental health services. Discussion: Based on the results, it is important to acknowledge possible adjustments that the mental health field and social workers could apply to help decrease the mental health stigma among Latino adults.

Book excerpt: Hispanic families may experience numerous barriers to physical and mental health care and tend to underutilize mental health services (Haack et al., 2018; Umpierre et al., 2015). English proficiency and cultural factors related to perceptions of mental health may impact the likelihood of Hispanic families seeking professional help for child mental health concerns (Alvarado & Modesto-Lowe, 2017; Eiraldi et al., 2006). The present study examined parental attitudes towards seeking professional help for child mental health concerns as well as possible differences in help-seeking for child mental (i.e., ADHD and depression) and physical health (i.e., stomach flu) concerns. Fifty-one Hispanic immigrant parents (40 mothers, 11 fathers; Mage = 35.62 years, SD= 8.19) completed measures to assess parental attitudes toward psychological help-seeking, likelihood to seek help for child physical and mental health concerns from formal and informal sources, and their level of familyism, religiosity, and acculturation. Participants indicated a higher likelihood to seek help from informal sources than from formal sources for both child mental and physical health conditions. Additionally, participants were more likely to seek help for a child's physical health condition than for mental health concerns. These results speak of the need to examine the process of help-seeking for Hispanic parents regarding mental health concerns in their children as well as the influence of other factors in their help-seeking process, including acculturation, familyism, and religiosity. Understanding these relationships can guide clinicians in identifying and problem-solving treatment barriers.

Book excerpt: Literature suggests that mental illness, particularly depression and trauma, is extremely prevalent in Latino populations, with low rates of psychological service use. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that would decrease or increase the use of mental health services in Latino populations. The data for this thesis came from: (1) 563 Latino college students were sampled via a confidential, online survey at a Southern California university; and (2) 90 Latino college students who participated in eight focus groups. Results correspond to prior literature, as only 21.0% of survey respondents stated they may want to receive counseling in the future, and participants endorsed many negative attitudes toward psychological help. Participants who were interviewed suggested that the barriers that keep Latinos from seeking services include stigma, time, finances, and cultural factors (e.g. espiritualismo, familismo, machismo/marianismo, confianza, etc). Participants suggested outreach via media (e.g. fliers, telenovelas, etc) to increase awareness of mental health services and decrease stigma regarding using mental health services, as a way to facilitate treatment. Implications for community leaders, educators, practitioners, and policy-makers will be discussed.
