Book Synopsis An Introduction to Latin American Economics by : Scott McKinney
Download or read book An Introduction to Latin American Economics written by Scott McKinney and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook serves as an introduction to the major economic topics and events in Latin America’s history, from the settling of the region by indigenous Americans and then Europeans, Africans and Asians, to the economic consequences of COVID-19. Each chapter concentrates on a particular period—for example, pre-Columbian America, the 1980s debt crisis, the 21st Century decline in income inequality—and introduces the concepts needed to understand the events of that period. These concepts include theories such as Dutch Disease and Dependency Theory, policies such as import-substituting industrialization and neoliberalism, and analytical tools such as the circular flow of income and the foreign exchange market. Descriptive data are used to illustrate these concepts: for example, Latin America’s current account balance during the 1970s and 1980s shows the impact of the debt crisis, while the relationship between money supply growth and inflation in Argentina during the 1980s and 1990s shows the impact of expansionary monetary policy and convertibility. With its focus on Latin American economic history and on the key concepts for understanding that history, this book can serve as the core textbook for an introductory course on Latin American Economics, or as a complementary text for an introductory course in Latin American Studies or a social science course on Latin America.

Chapter Two proposes an index intended to measure the formal political strengths of South American parliaments. Chapter Three explores the path sovereign debt resolutions have recently taken in developing countries. Chapter Four discusses regional migration in Latin America, focusing on the social and cultural aspects of a series of topics related to intraregional migration. Chapter Five summarizes the results from two recent studies which empirically investigate how Cuban citizens represent the concept of happiness and its semantic space. Chapter Six reviews the literature which describes the two most recent cholera epidemics in the western hemisphere. Chapter Seven uses findings from a survey of attitudes and beliefs of nurses practicing in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, recent scholarly publications, and public health data, to provide a description and an analysis of the factors that are known to influence HIV care and prevention in Mexico.
Book Synopsis Patterns of Development in Latin America by : John Sheahan
Download or read book Patterns of Development in Latin America written by John Sheahan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major work an economist with long experience as an advisor in developing countries explores the conflict between market forces and political reform that has led straight into Latin America's most serious problems. John Sheahan addresses three central concerns: the persistence of poverty in Latin American countries despite rising national incomes, the connection between economic troubles and political repression, and the relationships between Latin America and the rest of the world in trade and finance, as well as overall dependence. His comprehensive explanation of why many Latin Americans identify open political systems with frustration and economic breakdown will interest not only economists but also a broad range of other social scientists. This is "political economy" in the classical sense of the word, establishing a clear connection between the political and economic realities of Latin America.

Book Synopsis Union Catalogues of Serials, Guidelines for Creation and Maintenance, with Recommended Standards for Bibliographic and Holdings Control by : Jean Whiffin
Download or read book Union Catalogues of Serials, Guidelines for Creation and Maintenance, with Recommended Standards for Bibliographic and Holdings Control written by Jean Whiffin and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Union Catalogue of Serials presents the practical optimum for the design, compilation, and maintenance of world-wide standardized union cataloging activities. Particularly valuable for networks, bibliographic agencies, and institutions planning the establishment of a new, or the improvement of an existing, union catalogue of serials. Although the need for common standards in union cataloging has always been recognized, no single set of rules with universal applicability existed--until the publication of this exciting volume. These guidelines introduce codes of good practice and recommended standards for bibliographic and holdings control to be used in the creation and maintenance of union catalogues of serials, bearing in mind the requirements for international exchange. All countries can benefit from the universal relevance provided in these guidelines for improving physical and bibliographic access to serials resources and in making the most of opportunities provided by computerized production. This practical volume gives useful guidance on the components in the preparation and production of a union catalogue of serials, the administrative machinery required to bring each project to fruition, and the interface with other serials control systems and other information networks.
