Special attention was given to the lateral placement of the vehicles dependent on the optical impression of the curve and the roadside features, as well as on the general driving behavior, such as speed and acceleration/deceleration. In order to obtain the lateral placement of a vehicle passing through a curve a new method using video technique was developed at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. This new aproach allows the exact determination of the lateral placement of a vehicle on every possible cross section of the curve. Consequently the calculation of the frequency distribution on spots of interest and the driven path of vehicles negotiating horizontal curves will be possible. Conflict areas, caused by critical encroachments of the centerline or the edgelines could be easy and anable detected directly on the computer screen and drawing by plots. This new developed method was applied on three curves with different horizontal and vertical geometric alinements as well as different roadside features. The results reveal that the driven path can be very different from the built curve radius, according to the variations in lateral placement as vehicles approach and traverse curves. A further result of the study is the fact that excessive speeds often caused critical driving maneuvers and consequently lead to conflict areas especially with the opposing traffic. One of the main issues of this study was also the development of quantitative safety factors to evaluate the safety level of curves depending on the driving behavior as well as on the geometrical and roadside features of the curves. These new developed procedure was also applied in a case study. For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD number 872978.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When accidents happen, drivers are blamed for the mishap. When drivers consistently fail at certain locations, it then becomes obvious that the problem lies not with them, but with the geometry of the road itself. Because accidents are not evenly distributed throughout the road network, locations with high accident rates are a clear indication that there are other factors involved, besides driver error, which are characterized by the road itself. In most countries, two-lane rural roads make up about 90 percent of rural networks and they account for over 60 percent of highway fatalities worldwide, approximately 500,000 people per year. The methodology described in this book will support the achievement of quantified measures of: design consistency; operating speed consistency; and, driving dynamic consistency. The safety criteria are then combined into an overall safety module for a simplified general overview of the safety evaluation process. The authors also encourage the coordination of safety concerns with important economic, environmental and aesthetic considerations. This book will be an invaluable aid to educators, students, consultants, highway engineers and administrators, as well as scientists in the fields of highway design and traffic safety engineering.

These roads tend to be unlit, and drivers may have difficulty seeing or correctly predicting the curvature of horizontal curves. This leads to vehicles entering horizontal curves at speeds that are too high, which can often lead to vehicles running off the roadway. This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of a variety of active and passive curve warning and curve delineation systems on two two-lane rural roads to determine which is the most effective at reducing vehicle speeds and assisting lane-keeping. The study consisted of a human-factors study, as well as an observational study. There were nine curves examined in the study on two road sections in Southwest Virginia. The human-factors study included participants whose speed and lane position were tracked as they drove through eight curves, both before and after new treatments were installed in each of the eight curves. The observational study examined the speed and lane position of traffic on all the curves before and after the installation of the new treatments. The observational study included a curve on a road near the primary study section. The results of the study were mixed, with every tested system leading to some reductions in speed or encroachments at some parts of the curve while also leading to increases in the same values at other parts of the curve. No clear difference was discovered between passive and active systems or between delineation and warning systems. The study recommends that in addition to a safety assessment, specific curve characteristics and budget should be the main considerations in the selection of a treatment for a curve.

Book excerpt: This study compiled an inventory of rural two-lane highways under the operation of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), investigated typical dimensions and characteristics of such roadways, and utilized this information to perform a detailed accident statistic analysis. Crash statistics comparisons were made for highways with and without edge lines. In addition to general accident frequency analysis, varying traffic lane and shoulder widths, and roadway curvature, factors such as accident type, intersection presence, light condition, surface condition, crash-supporting factors, severity, driver age, and driver gender were considered.

Book excerpt: "The driver of an isolated vehicle on a given section of highway, whether it is urban or rural, will choose a path on the pavement that offers the least resistance to driver effort and which to him seems safest. Lateral obstructions, such as retaining walls, trees, bridge abutments, ect., which may cause him to deviate from the desired path represent some degree of hazard to the driver and should be removed, if practicle. The purpose of this investigation was to determine any change in the lateral placement of automobiles due to side restrictions on rural two-way, two-lane highways. Phase one of the study concerned two bridges on U.S. Highway 63 near Rolla, Missouri, that differed only in the amount of lateral clearance between the edge of the traffic lane and its corresponding bridge abutment. Phase two of the investigation concerned a bridge near Newburg, Missouri, and the change caused by reflectorizing the bridge abutments for better night visibility. The results of phase one showed that by increasing the amount of offset between the traffic lane edge and the bridge abutment, drivers positioned their vehicle more correctly within their lane. For the purpose of this investigation, a vehicle is considered correctly positioned within its lane when the vehicle is centered in the lane; that is, there is an equal distance from the pavement center line to the left edge of the left tire and from the right edge of the right tire to the right edge of the traffic lane. In phase two of the investigation, it was determined that the reflectorization of the bridge abutments was benefitial in that drivers positioned their vehicle more correctly within its lane"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

Book excerpt: A survey of the current delineation practices in the various U.S. States and Canadian provinces indicated the importance of a set of quantitative delineation guidelines. According to the survey, no computer assisted methods are used for the curve delineation task. The evaluator responses before and after curve delineation, with the objective to obtain input for the curve delineation tasks, indicate that (1) evaluators have difficulties to agree on the type, number, and location of curve delineation devices, just by looking at a curve while driving with low beams at night; 2) subjective evaluation of an undelineated curve tends to provide a recommended number of devices that is considerably lower than the actual number required when placing four devices within a driver's functional visual field of view; 3) the optimal type, number, and location of the delineation devices should be computed with a set of algorithms implemented in a software package. These findings support the development and use of a knowledge-based, interactive software which computes the delineation layout. The approach and center speed measurements before and after delineation installation were conducted in order to assure that there are no adverse effects on driver behavior due to delineation. The measurements indicate that there is no systematic pattern in speed increase or speed reduction before and after the delineation devices are installed.
