Book Synopsis Lateral-directional Flying Qualities for Power Approach: Influence of Dutch Roll Frequency by : Edward Seckel
Download or read book Lateral-directional Flying Qualities for Power Approach: Influence of Dutch Roll Frequency written by Edward Seckel and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program was conducted to extend the previous lateral-directional flying qualities research at Princeton University to include the influence of Dutch roll frequency. Simulated carrier approaches were flown in a variable stability Navion airplane at a closure speed of 105 knots. An environment of moderate natural turbulence and the carrier's turbulent wake were simulated. All operations were conducted in daylight under visual flight conditions. Data in the form of pilot Cooper ratings and commentary were obtained for configurations having several combinations of Dutch roll frequency, Dutch roll damping, and dihedral effect. Some limited testing was conducted at different roll time constants. The results of the program established a range of Dutch roll frequency and dihedral effect considered to be the most acceptable for the carrier approach task in turbulence. Trends of pilot opinion rating were qualitatively established for departures of frequency and dihedral effect from their optimum levels. The factors contributing to the deterioration of pilot rating in these instances were found to be turbulence sensitivity in roll and yaw, a predominantly yawing Dutch roll mode, and heading control problems. Increased Dutch roll damping was found to improve the pilot rating of those configurations which were sensitive to turbulence in yaw and those which had a predominantly yawing Dutch roll mode. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Flight Stability and Automatic Control presents an organized introduction to the useful and relevant topics necessary for a flight stability and controls course. Not only is this text presented at the appropriate mathematical level, it also features standard terminology and nomenclature, along with expanded coverage of classical control theory, autopilot designs, and modern control theory. Through the use of extensive examples, problems, and historical notes, author Robert Nelson develops a concise and vital text for aircraft flight stability and control or flight dynamics courses.
Book Synopsis The Effect of Lateral Area on the Lateral Stability and Control Characteristics of an Airplane as Determined by Tests of a Model in the Langley Free-flight Tunnel by : Hubert M. Drake

Drake and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of large variations of lateral area on the lateral stability and control characteristics of a free-flying model when ailerons are used as the principal control have been determined by flight tests in the Langley free-flight tunnel. The effects of the lateral-force parameter (rate of change of lateral-force coefficient with angle of sideslip) were investigated for a wide range of values of the directional-stability parameter (rate of change of yawing-moment coefficient with angle of sideslip) and the rotary-damping-in-yaw parameter (rate of change of yawing-moment coefficient with yawing angular velocity).

Book Synopsis Experimental Determination of the Effect of Negative Dihedral on Lateral Stability and Control Characteristics at High Lift Coefficients by : Marion O. McKinney
Download or read book Experimental Determination of the Effect of Negative Dihedral on Lateral Stability and Control Characteristics at High Lift Coefficients written by Marion O. McKinney and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The effects of negative dihedral on lateral stability and control characteristics at high lift coefficients have been determined by flight tests of a model in the Langley free-flight tunnel. The geometric dihedral angle of the model wing was varied from 0° to -20° and the vertical-tail area, from 0 to 35 percent of the wing area. The model was flown with various combinations of dihedral angle and vertical-tail area at lift coefficients of 1.0, 1.4, and 1.8. As the effective dihedral was decreased from 0° to -15°, the model became increasingly difficult to fly. With an effective dihedral of -15° the flying characteristics were considered to be dangerous because, when there was only a slight lag in the application of corrective control following a disturbance, the unstable moments resulting from spiral instability became sufficiently large to overpower the moments of the controls so that return to straight flight was impossible. Inasmuch as full-scale airplanes because of their greater size will diverge at a slower rate than free-flight models, the amount of negative effective dihedral that would constitute a dangerous condition is expected to be greater for full-scale airplanes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of flight dynamics requires a thorough understanding of the theory of the stability and control of aircraft, an appreciation of flight control systems and a grounding in the theory of automatic control. Flight Dynamics Principles is a student focused text and provides easy access to all three topics in an integrated modern systems context. Written for those coming to the subject for the first time, the book provides a secure foundation from which to move on to more advanced topics such as, non-linear flight dynamics, flight simulation, handling qualities and advanced flight control. - Additional examples to illustrate the application of computational procedures using tools such as MATLAB®, MathCad® and Program CC® - Improved compatibility with, and more expansive coverage of the North American notational style - Expanded coverage of lateral-directional static stability, manoeuvrability, command augmentation and flight in turbulence - An additional coursework study on flight control design for an unmanned air vehicle (UAV)
