Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later Speeches on Political Questions: With Select Controversial Papers The following speeches deal with questions of current American politics from 1871 to 1889, and they embody, to some extent, the political history of the country during this period. The greater part of them will particularly interest the surviving associates and friends of the men who withdrew from the Republican party in 1872, and thenceforward remained outside of its fold; for they set forth with clearness and force the reasons which prompted them to this memorable revolt against organ ized intolerance and political greed, and made their re turn impossible. Although the party still lives, it has completely outlasted the causes which produced it and made it a necessity, While in the clear mirror of his tory and the light of existing facts it is now seen that the old rallying-cry of reform within the party was a false pretense and a mischievous delusion. Download or read book When Bad Men Combine written by Shawn Francis Peters and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Star Route scandal captured the nation’s attention for more than a decade, with newspapers throughout the United States characterizing it as an unprecedented case of Gilded Age graft. Shawn Francis Peters’s When Bad Men Combine provides a glimpse into this uniquely tumultuous period marked by brazen greed and duplicity. In the first book to offer a full recounting of the Star Route maelstrom, which roiled American politics during the 1870s and 1880s, Peters reveals how postal service corruption resulted in a remarkable legal case that featured jury bribery and document theft. When Bad Men Combine follows the saga to its culmination as two sensational criminal trials presented evidence implicating some of the most prominent men in America and, perhaps, led to the assassination of President James Garfield.

The greater part of them will particularly interest the surviving associates and friends of the men who withdrew from the Republican party in 1872, and thenceforward remained outside of its fold; for they set forth with clearness and force the reasons which prompted them to this memorable revolt against organized intolerance and political greed, and made their return impossible. Although the party still lives, it has completely outlasted the causes which produced it and made it a necessity, while in the clear mirror of history and the light of existing facts it is now seen that the old rallying-cry of "reform within the party" was a false pretense and a mischievous delusion. The controversial papers which follow the speeches sufficiently disclose the occasion for writing them, and fairly indicate the character and material points of the articles to which they reply. The historical paper which closes the volume is one of numerous magazine articles, and is reprinted because it deals with a vital political question, and is believed to be a real contribution to the truth of history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold Medalist, 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the U.S. History Category Finalist for the 2018 Sally and Morris Lasky Prize presented by the Center for Political History at Lebanon Valley College The Suffragents is the untold story of how some of New York's most powerful men formed the Men's League for Woman Suffrage, which grew between 1909 and 1917 from 150 founding members into a force of thousands across thirty-five states. Brooke Kroeger explores the formation of the League and the men who instigated it to involve themselves with the suffrage campaign, what they did at the behest of the movement's female leadership, and why. She details the National American Woman Suffrage Association's strategic decision to accept their organized help and then to deploy these influential new allies as suffrage foot soldiers, a role they accepted with uncommon grace. Led by such luminaries as Oswald Garrison Villard, John Dewey, Max Eastman, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, and George Foster Peabody, members of the League worked the streets, the stage, the press, and the legislative and executive branches of government. In the process, they helped convince waffling politicians, a dismissive public, and a largely hostile press to support the women's demand. Together, they swayed the course of history.

Download or read book Closing the Gate written by Andrew Gyory and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which barred practically all Chinese from American shores for ten years, was the first federal law that banned a group of immigrants solely on the basis of race or nationality. By changing America's traditional policy of open immigration, this landmark legislation set a precedent for future restrictions against Asian immigrants in the early 1900s and against Europeans in the 1920s. Tracing the origins of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Andrew Gyory presents a bold new interpretation of American politics during Reconstruction and the Gilded Age. Rather than directly confront such divisive problems as class conflict, economic depression, and rising unemployment, he contends, politicians sought a safe, nonideological solution to the nation's industrial crisis--and latched onto Chinese exclusion. Ignoring workers' demands for an end simply to imported contract labor, they claimed instead that working people would be better off if there were no Chinese immigrants. By playing the race card, Gyory argues, national politicians--not California, not organized labor, and not a general racist atmosphere--provided the motive force behind the era's most racist legislation.
Book Synopsis Consistent Democracy by : Leslie Butler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Consistent Democracy offers an intellectual history of the arguments, advocacy, and commentary about the so-called woman question and American popular government from the 1830s through the 1890s. What did it mean, a range of observers asked, that the world's first mass democracy only enfranchised white men? The inconsistency of women's "political non-existence" provoked a movement for change, led by familiar figures such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Movement voices were one part of a noisy and often discordant chorus. Only by attending to this broad range of competing voices can we understand popular political thought in nineteenth-century America"--
