Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later Poems This book contains all poetry not in dramatic form that I have written between my seven and-twentieth year and the year 1921. I have included one long poem in dramatic form, of which a much shortened version, intended for stage representation, is in my book of plays. I have left out nearly all the long notes which seemed necessary before the work of various writers, but especially of my friend Lady Gregory, had made the circumstantial origins of my verse, in ancient legend or in the legends of the country side, familiar to readers of poetry. Book Synopsis Later American Poems (Classic Reprint) by : J. E. Wetherell
Download or read book Later American Poems (Classic Reprint) written by J. E. Wetherell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later American Poems This anthology, as its title suggests, is intended as a companion to the editor's earlier book, "Later Canadian Poems." The scope, however, of this collection of American poems is very much wider. American literature divides itself naturally into two epochs, - the earlier including the great names of Bryant, Whittier, Emerson, Longfellow, Poe, Holmes, Lowell and Whitman, -the later including all the living poets and their deceased contemporaries. This anthology, therefore, embodies a collection of American poems written since about 1860, omitting the work of those poets of the earlier epoch that continued to write after that date. The selections in this volume are quoted from the works of more than fifty authors. The number might easily have been increased to a hundred, but a manual such as this cannot be exhaustive. All the greatest writers of verse of the present epoch are, it is believed, represented here. Of the minor poets some readers may miss a favorite or two, but a cogent reason could be given for every omission. The present volume is intended mainly as a supplementary reading-book for Canadian High Schools, and that design has influenced the editor not only in his choice of poems but also in determining the limitation in the list of authors.
