Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later American Poems The selections in this volume are quoted from the works of more than fifty authors. The number might easily have been increased to a hundred, but a manual such as this cannot be exhaustive. All the greatest writers of verse of the present epoch are, it is believed, represented here. Of the minor poets some readers may miss a favorite or two, but a cogent reason could be given for every omission. The present volume is intended mainly as a supplementary read ing-book for Canadian High Schools, and that design has influenced the editor not only in his choice of poems but also in determining the limitation in the list of authors. The editor has taken care to include representations of the work of some writers of exquisite verse at present not iiipreface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry of America: Selections From One Hundred American Poets From 1776 to 1876 I claim precedence for it as the first fair and compre hensive sample of American Poetry given to the old country. The American Poems of my friend Mr. W. M. Rossetti may not claim to be this, as he omits Longfellow and all humorous verse, and as, not having had before him the last edition of Griswold (prepared by Mr. Stoddard in '7 2 but published only in the Fall of last year), he was apparently unacquainted with much of the best poetry of the last twenty years. Or, if on this ground of complete ness my work may not take the place which his would seem to assume, I may yet make good my venture as not uncalled for, even though but supplementary. Omitting as less worthy, after careful comparison of their works, 25 of Mr. Rossetti's poets, I give 61 not given by him; while of his 255 poems my choice has taken only 21 a difference not altogether to be accounted for by difference of taste or opinion, but, I think, owing partly to the wider field for selection of which I have been fortunate enough to have the range. From Griswold's own collections, containing nearly two thousand poems, I take 57; to Mr. Stoddard's supplements I am indebted for about as many more. The rest of my 256 poems, representing 100 poets (not including those quoted in the Review of Colonial Poetry), rewarded a further search among completer works and more recent editions. Half of my book is not to be found in any exist ing collection of specimens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poets of America From the beginning of the present reign. The scheme of the Victorian Poets included, besides an extended review of acknowledged leaders, a concise analysis of groups forming the general choir of the period represented. The work thus became somewhat complete in scope, and doubtless has served as a critical handbook and means of reference. This incidental result, however, was quite subordinate to the author's main design; and I think that such a fact was evident not only to a professional class, but to all readers interested concerning the spirit and methods of poetry, - especially of our English song. To that design I wish shortly to refer, as it is the chief motive of the present volume also. But first I would reproduce a statement made in the Preface to the former work, viz., that the author originally had under taken to write upon the poets of this country and the causes of their successes and failures; that on examina tion he had found modern and radical changes in the conditions affecting ideal effort, at home and abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Poems: 1776-1922, With Notes and Biographies The purpose of this volume is not to thrust upon the public another anthology which, after decorating the drawing-room table a few days at Christmas, shall go to rest under the dust on the top shelf. On the contrary, it is intended to serve in the hands of students as a useful collection of American verse, with notes of explanation and interpretation, which shall illustrate the growth and spirit of American life as expressed in its literature. Moreover, it Should, by giving new perceptions of power and beauty, lift the spirit and increase the sum of human enjoyment. Literature is the record of the best thoughts, says Emerson; and the best thoughts of the best Americans are most assuredly 'worthy of careful study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America, an Ode: And Other Poems IN putting this little volume of poems into the hands of the public, it may not be impertinent for the author to say, by way of preface, that he has not been encouraged to brave the perilous sea of authorship, by the interested fiatteries of any of his personal friends: to most of them his rhyming propensi ties have been, but are now no longer, (very much to the grief of the world wise among them, he doubts not, ) as a sealed book. Neither has he been made the dupe of an over-estimate of their value and importance, for really he has the modesty to believe, that he might as well attempt to hang his hat upon one of Jupiter's satellites, as to reach that standard of excellence in the Divine Art, which he has erected in his own mind. The reader will now very naturally inquire, and perhaps with no little amazement, What could have induced him to launch upon a voyage, which should neither have favoring gales at starting, a comfortable outfit, or a port of destination. Suffice it then - that as the wind bloweth where it listeth, and no man knoweth whence it cometh or whither it goeth, so have these fancies come to him (he knew not whence or wherefore) in green and waste places, with the first breath of morning, at noon-day and at midnight, and they are the promptings of moods, as incomprehensible to him as the spiritual life he lives. They are put forth without pretension and Without a sanguine hope on his part, that they will win the car, or succeed in making any impression upon the heart, of the reader. He may say briefly, that he conceived, wrote, and published them, without demanding of himself a reason, - and whether he sell them or not, is a problem, involving certain considerations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Continuity of American Poetry I shall deal in turn with expressions (and with repressions too) of that twin impulse up to our own times, when it has been followed out to its bitterest and fullest implications (by Wallace Stevens) and when it has been subjected to a mythic, orthodox religious transformation, whereby, as it is shown to be merely human, it becomes the means of demonstrating its own inadequacy (by T. S. Eliot). The narrative, as I shall indicate in the Afterword, properly closes with Stevens and Eliot. The one stakes all on the radical sufficiency of humanism; the other, on its radical insufficiency. For the one, freedom, as it is manifested in poetry, guarantees us all the community we can desire; for the other, community, likewise as it is manifested in poetry, guarantees us all the freedom we can bear. In the later work of Stevens and Eliot, the impulse, no longer taken for granted, is conceived of as fixing a set of either/or alternatives at the extreme, man as against God. It might well be that the alterna tiyes are false. Any case, the 1mpulse - wh1ch is to find a place for poetry iii - the life of modern man now, In our owir time, there is se new modes of reconciliation. Harper and Anthony Walton present the definitive collection of black verse in the United States--200 years of vision, struggle, power, beauty, and triumph from 52 outstanding poets. From the neoclassical stylings of slave-born Phillis Wheatley to the wistful lyricism of Paul Lawrence Dunbar . . . the rigorous wisdom of Gwendolyn Brooks...the chiseled modernism of Robert Hayden...the extraordinary prosody of Sterling A. Brown...the breathtaking, expansive narratives of Rita Dove...the plaintive rhapsodies of an imprisoned Elderidge Knight . . . The postmodern artistry of Yusef Komunyaka. Here, too, is a landmark exploration of lesser-known artists whose efforts birthed the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts movements--and changed forever our national literature and the course of America itself. Meticulously researched, thoughtfully structured, The Vintage Book of African-American Poetry is a collection of inestimable value to students, educators, and all those interested in the ever-evolving tradition that is American poetry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Whitman to Sandburg in American Poetry: A Critical Survey Though none of the other poets approach him in size or comprehensiveness, many of them are none the less greatly significant. Nationalism, cosmopol itan influences in art and politics, a varying natural ism and mysticism, futilitarianism, and a new and abounding T1tan1sm, are some of the marks of the later bards. Folk poetry, too, with its rude action, domestic sentiments, and humor is scarcely less sig nificant of the divine average and its moods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1921 and Year Book of American Poetry To get at the character of an American Poetry then, we must understand these forces which have been at work upon our national experiences. It is interesting in light of what I have said to quote this passage from a letter which I received from an interested reader of these anthologies. In the 1920 Anthology, it runs, you speak of we Americans as being without a 'tap root' in literature. I know we are young, yet it seems to me that if the real hundred per-cent American writers were encouraged the 'root' would respond by a greater depth of growth and in time we would have an American literature, and I am going to suggest that you in the 1921 Anthology select writers as nearly American as possible in name and in harmony with our country - make this issue American in every way descendents of the New England and New York and Pennsylvania and Virginia settlers.
