Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wayside Songs: With Later Lyrics The lights and shades went racing Across the fields of rye, As the hopes and fears that tremble When Love himself is nigh. I call to mind the fancies, So idle, yet so dear, That fluttered round my heart, sweet, When you yourself drew near. A sunbeam on the meadows, A lily on the, stream, A sweet reality - and yet, The image of a dream. Time has not changed the fancies Of that remembered hour Whose bud of bliss has blossomed To true and perfect flower. And fortune grant the way, love, Our happy footsteps tend, Be sunny as the past, love, And sunny to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Poet's Last Songs Once a little song I made In a garden as I strayed, On the myrtle leaves in morning dew I traced it; But by noontide not a line Found I of that song of mine, Where the finger of the sunbeam had effaced it. Then in scorn of self I laughed, And forswore the Poet's craft, And I turned from Love, the Poet's lord and master, Yea, I turned and fled away, But he followed me all day; When I fled, he always followed me the faster. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs in the Night During the earlier years of his ministry he contributed to the religious press many prose articles and not a few poems. In his later years his thoughts appear to have been less frequently crystallized into poetic form, but what he wrote was exquisite in sentiment and diction, while some of it is worthy to rank with the productions of the masters of the art. The writing of verse was only incidental in his busy life, a sort of pastime, as the many bits of only a few lines hastily penned found here and there among his papers plainly show. But what he wrote has caused his friends to regret that he did not write more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Songs Writing amidst rather too much noise and squalor to do justice at all to the delicate rustic muse of Francis Ledwidge, I do not like to delay his book any longer, nor to fail in a promise long ago made to him to write this introduction. He has gone down in that vast maelstrom into which poets do well to adventure and from which their country might perhaps be Wise to withhold them, but that is our Country's affair. He has left behind him verses of great beauty, 'simple rural lyrics that may be something Of an anodyne for this stricken age. If ever an age needed beautiful little songs our age needs them; and I know few songs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A First Series of Church Songs (Classic Reprint) by : S. Baring-Gould
Download or read book A First Series of Church Songs (Classic Reprint) written by S. Baring-Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Series of Church Songs Of late years Messrs. Sankey and Moody, and, later still, the Salvation Army, have introduced religious songs which have at once become favourites, because the airs have been secular, and, in some cases, the words rollicking. The result has been a distinct lowering of the reverence of the people for holy things and holy words. Sacred aspirations and names, at which angels and devils bow, are trolled out or roared to music-hall tunes, sometimes by tipsy men, and often without thought. The tendency of these songs is not only to irreverence and profanity, but also to encourage heretical views of the scheme of Salvation. Justification is upheld as a sentimental outgush of excited hysteria, not as the gradual growth of a spiritual life; and this mischievous teaching poisons the sources of the moral conscience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns and Later Poems Early drawn by his natural bent into a printing office, he reached the foremost place as a stereotyper and type founder, and displayed consummate taste in the manu facture and arrangement of plain and ornamental type. The firm of which he was the head and master-spirit became famous for its productions. From his boyhood he seized every fragment of time for reading and study. And early did acceptable work in literary journals. Volume after volume of poetry followed in due course, and the present volume was prepared for the press by his own hand in his eighty eighth year. Book Synopsis Songs of Toil and Triumph (Classic Reprint) by : J. L. McCreery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Toil and Triumph One of the following poems were originally writ ten for the general public. Most of them, espe cially the longer ones, were meant only for my own family and a circle of intimate personal friends whence it results that many of them refer, to a greater extent than would otherwise be the case, and than I could wish were the case, to myself, my personal experiences, hopes, beliefs, doubts, and feelings. It would be entirely too sweeping a generalization, however, to conclude that every thing to be found here is a transcript of my own outer and inner life for instance, it would not be safe to conclude from Such a Night as This that I am a widower, or from The Voiceless that I am a Woman Just how much of what seems personal herein is fact, and how much of it is fancy, it will be time enough to tell when I come to write my autobiography. And I have not yet begun to write my autobiography. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Nature Songs (Classic Reprint) written by David Chalmers Nimmo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Songs Some of these songs might be placed under another head; but the imagery, viewpoint or book interest justifies their appearance here. There is already enough matter in print and some yet to come for a good sized book of Civic Songs. I trust I shall be permitted to gather and correct the old and produce some better new material in the near future for a book of Soul Songs. A later and smaller book but perhaps more appealing, would be Home Songs. It is not quite an inspiration to earn money with the hands and then throw it away in producing books that no one will read, but if the verse has any real merit, and I still think it has, it ought to be done. They've all got through and so shall I. In sending forth these songs there is nothing asked or expected but just a reading. Give them the reality and brutality of nature. All must have their judgment day and the sooner the better, but it is well to re member that in judging others we are writing the last and final sentence on ourselves. D. C. N. March lst, 1915.
