Book excerpt: Abstract: The Santa Maria Basin (SMB) is located on the Central Coast of California and comprises the area bound by the Santa Ynez Fault to the south, the Little Pine-Foxen Canyon-Santa Maria River Fault Zone to the northeast, and the Hosgri fault to the west. The SMB is located in a zone of convergence between the clockwise rotating Western Transverse Ranges (WTR) and the relatively non-rotated Southern Coast Ranges (SCR). The rate and style of Late Quaternary deformation and uplift has been poorly defined in the SMB. The Zaca Creek Field Area, in the northern Santa Ynez Valley, contains a sequence of fluvial strath terraces that provide markers for uplift and deformation. Fluvial terraces along Zaca Creek were mapped as 8 separate units, surveyed for deformation with GPS and 1 m Pleiades DEM based transects, and sampled for Luminescence dating. Luminescence results suggest an age of 48 ka for a terrace 52 m above the active channel, and an age of 79 ka for a terrace 75 m above the active channel. One fold and two faults have been active in the Late Quaternary, but the structures slip or deform at very slow rates of 0.05 m/ka-0.17 m/ka. Stream incision rates and minimum rock uplift rates range between 0.95 m/ka to 1.08 m/ka. The rapid uplift rates of the Santa Ynez Valley are best explained by continued vertical axis rotation of the WTR, where strain is distributed via a regional detachment.

Book excerpt: The right lateral San Gabriel Fault Zone in southern California extends from the northwestern corner of the Ridge Basin southeastward to the eastern end of the San Gabriel Mountains. It bifurcates to the southeast in the northwestern San Gabriel Mountains. The northern and older branch curves eastward in the range interior. The southern younger branch, the Vasquez Creek Fault, curves southeastward to merge with the Sierra Madre Fault Zone, which separates the San Gabriel Mountains from the northern Los Angeles Basin margin. An isolated exposure of partly macrofossiliferous nearshore shallow-marine sandstone, designated the Gold Canyon beds, is part of the southwest wall of the fault zone 5.5 km northwest of the bifurcation. These beds contain multiple subordinate breccia-conglomerate lenses and are overlain unconformably by folded Pliocene-Pleistocene Saugus Formation fanglomerate. The San Gabriel Fault Zone cuts both units.

Book excerpt: The Sierra Madre fault (SMF) is an east-west striking reverse fault system along the southern flank of the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles, California. The 140 km-long SMF is separated into four segments; I focus on the multi-stranded, 55 km-long Central Sierra Madre fault (CSMF). The CSMF lacks a well-characterized geologic slip rate, and the goal of this study is to constrain the CSMF slip rate using offset alluvial fan terraces dated by terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide and infrared-stimulated luminescence, The study area includes three catchments along the western third of the CSMF, where I modify previous geologic mapping using field observations and analysis of lidar digital elevation models (DEMs) to delineate terrace flights in greater detail. Vertical separation estimates are derived from 12-44 m-wide topographic swath profiles that were extracted from 0.5-3.0 m-resolution lidar DEMs. Dip-slip displacements were calculated from observed vertical separations and fault geometry. Monte Carlo error propagation was used to estimate slip rates with uncertainties for the western CSMF of 0.96 +3.61/-0.61, 1.17 +3.27/-0.57, 0.70 +1.28/-0.33 and 1.19 +1.31/-0.48 mm/yr. The main source of uncertainty in these estimates is derived from poorly-constrained fault dips. This study indicates that in general, the surface age estimates are in agreement with other terrace age estimates in the region and that the CSMF is in the late stages of a strain accumulation cycle. My CSMF slip rate estimates relative to the other SMF segments suggest that slip rate partitioning along the SMF does not vary monotonically, which I attribute to interaction with other faults, such as the Puente Hills, within the structurally complex Los Angeles region.

Book excerpt: The Santa Susana fault (SSF) is the western extension of the Sierra Madre fault zone in southern California. It originated as a Miocene normal fault and reactivated as a reverse fault in the Quaternary, uplifting the Santa Susan Mountains. In the current seismic hazard model, the SSF has a poorly constrained slip rate. This study utilized U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology, modal compositions, clast counts, and balanced cross-sections to resolve the Quaternary slip history of the SST. Clast analyses in the footwall Saugus Formation show an upsection transition from dominantly crystalline basement rocks to sedimentary rocks. Modal composition data indicates each sampled sandstone formation is arkosic (>55% feldspar), with few lithic grains (5-15%), derived from a local basement uplift.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The western Transverse Ranges and southern Coast Ranges of California are adjacent to one another but experience different deformation styles and rates. We used marine terraces along the coast between these two areas as markers to see how the fast rates of uplift and deformation in the western Transverse Ranges transition to slower rates in the southern Coast Ranges. Recent improvements to sediment dating techniques, paleo sea-level curves, and remote imagery allowed for mapping of marine terraces from Point Conception to Point Sal in south-central coastal California to fill data gaps in coastal uplift rates and evaluate implications for existing data and models to better understand amount and timing of local and regional uplift. We used post infrared-infrared stimulated luminescence dating to determine ages of two flights of marine terraces at five locations. Refined terrace chronology indicates the lowest emergent marine terrace formed ~49.5 ka and the other, higher emergent marine terrace formed ~84 ka. Refined terrace ages suggest rock uplift rates ranging from 0.59 to 1.96 m/ka throughout the study area from 84 ka to present. Our data suggests the Santa Maria Basin, which is the transition zone between the rotating Transverse Ranges and non-rotating southern Coast Ranges, has coastal uplift rates more similar to the western Transverse Ranges than the southern Coast Ranges. Our data is consistent with models that attribute Quaternary shortening and uplift of the Santa Maria Basin to ongoing vertical axis rotation of the western Transverse Ranges, which is accommodated by an underlying detachment fault and ramp.

Book excerpt: The Whittier fault forms the central part of a fault system extending from the East Montebello fault at Whittier Narrows to the Elsinore fault, which is traced as far as the Mexican border. The Whittier fault forms a restraining bend in this fault system, resulting in uplift of the Puente Hills. The northwestern part of the Whittier fault in the Whittier oil field in the eastern Los Angeles basin strikes approximately N65°W and dips 70-75° northeast. The fault is near the range front of the Puente Hills northwest of Turnbull Canyon, and within the Puente Hills to the southeast. The central reach of the Whittier fault had normal separation in the Relizian and Luisian stages of the middle Miocene. From the Mohnian through Repettian stages of the late Miocene and early Pliocene, little, if any, offset occurred until the initiation of reverse offset in the Venturian stage of the late Pliocene. A component of right-lateral strike-slip may have been added near the end of the Pliocene, coinciding with the formation of the Elsinore fault. The Workman Hill and Whittier Heights faults may have formed in the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene, coinciding with the possible initiation of strike-slip on the Whittier fault. The present sense of slip on the Whittier fault southeast of the study area is nearly pure right-lateral strike-slip, with a slip rate of 2-3 mm/yr. The northwestern part of the Whittier fault has a component of reverse slip of approximately 1 mm/yr. The amount of strike-slip on this part of the fault was not determined by this study. The Rideout Heights, 304, and 184 low-amplitude anticlines formed in the Whittier oil field area in the late Miocene and early Pliocene. The Rideout Heights anticline is a southwest-verging fault-propagation fold trending northwesterly from the mouth of Turnbull Canyon through the Rideout Heights area. Strata are overturned in the southwest limb of the fold, and normally dipping in the northeast limb; the fold has been cut along its hinge by the Whittier fault. The 304 and 184 anticlines are north-verging and appear to be beddingplane shear folds in the northeast limb of the La Habra syncline. Recent strike-slip on the Whittier fault may have reactivated the 184 anticline, causing uplift of the footwall block south of Turnbull Canyon. North of Turnbull Canyon, the Whittier fault is at the range front with no evidence of Quaternary footwall uplift. The 304 anticline could be a fault-propagation fold from a previously-unknown southwest dipping blind reverse fault south of the Whittier fault; uplift on this fold could also be the cause of footwall uplift south of Turnbull Canyon. Active fault traces, possibly strike-slip, are on or near the Whittier fault south of Turnbull Canyon, but to the north, recent offsets appear to be northeast of the Whittier fault in the Puente Hills. These offsets may represent an attempt of the Whittier fault to straighten itself by bypassing the restraining bend at Turnbull Canyon. so, this movement is too recent to offset conglomerate beds more than a few tens of meters.
