Book excerpt: This dissertation explores one overarching question relevant to the paleoclimate of the latest Pleistocene glacial cycle (approximately the last 130,000 years): “How did spatial and temporal evolution of ocean temperature, both at the surface and interior, relate to other parts of the climate system in the late Pleistocene?” Results from three studies are presented that seek to address longstanding questions in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology for the late Pleistocene using a combination of novel and accepted statistical and geochemical analysis techniques and leveraging comparisons with available global climate model data. The last interglaciation (LIG; ~129-116 ka) was the most recent period in Earth’s history with higher-than-present global sea level (≥6-9 m) under similar-to-preindustrial concentrations of atmospheric CO2. This suggests that additional feedbacks related to albedo, insolation, and ocean overturning circulation may have resulted in the apparent warming required to cause the higher sea level. Our understanding of how much warmer the LIG was relative to the present interglaciation remains uncertain, however, with current estimates suggesting that sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) were 0-2°C warmer than late-20th century average global temperatures. We present a global compilation of proxy-based annual SST spanning the LIG. Using Monte Carlo and Bayesian techniques to propagate uncertainties in age-model and proxy-based SST reconstructions, our results quantify the spatial timing, amplitude, and uncertainty in global and regional SST change during the LIG. Our conclusions suggest that the LIG surface ocean was indistinguishable from the average surface ocean temperatures observed for the last two decades (1995-2014). This may ultimately imply that the Earth is currently committed to ≥6-9m of equilibrium sea-level rise. Although the LIG is not an analogue for present and future climate change due to the large differences in seasonal orbital insolation and absence of anthropogenic greenhouse gas radiative forcing, it provides an opportunity to test the ability of global climate models to simulate the mechanisms and climate feedbacks responsible for the warmer climate and higher global mean sea level during the LIG. However, when forced only by LIG greenhouse gas concentrations and insolation changes, climate models suggest that the annual mean temperature response was not significantly different from preindustrial control simulations. We present the first multi-model and multiscenario ensemble of transient and equilibrium global climate modeling results spanning the LIG. We show, using a novel model-data comparison framework, that these scenario-specific model results exhibit regionally independent agreement with ocean basin-specific proxy-based SST stacks. This result ultimately implies structural uncertainties and/or misrepresentations of climate feedbacks in the existing suite of climate model simulations, or underestimations of additional proxy-based SST uncertainties. Our conclusions suggest a new target LIG time period for future model-data comparisons and highlight the need for higher resolution transient climate modeling of the LIG and its dependence on meltwater input to the high latitude oceans during the preceding deglaciation. Few discoveries have stimulated the paleoclimate community more so than Heinrich events. Nevertheless, the cause of Heinrich events, characterized by a large flux of icebergs sourced from the Hudson Strait Ice Stream into the North Atlantic, remains debated. Commonly attributed to internal ice-sheet instability, the occurrence of Heinrich events during the coldest intervals of the last glacial cycle instead suggests an external climate control. We expand on recent studies that have shown that incursions of warm subsurface waters into the intermediate depth North Atlantic Ocean destabilized an ice shelf fronting the Hudson Strait Ice Stream, causing a Heinrich event. We present new surface- and bottom-water stable isotope, trace metal, and sedimentary records from two cores taken along the Labrador margin that further support subsurface warming as a trigger of Hudson Strait Heinrich events. We further relate these changes to other sediment core records from the North Atlantic and transient deglacial climate modeling results to show that subsurface warming was ubiquitous across the intermediate North Atlantic during the early part of the last deglaciation and was most likely caused by a preceding reduction in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.

Book excerpt: To provide greater spatial coverage of late Pleistocene to Holocene environmental change in the Midwestern United States, a 1350 cm long sediment core was collected from Silver Lake in northeast Ohio. Age control was provided by new radiocarbon dates, correlation to a dated lake record from western Ohio, and a prior study of Silver Lake. Lithologic descriptions and sedimentary profiles of dry bulk density (DBD), organic matter (OM), carbonate, C/N, grain size, magnetic properties, and concentrations of terrigenous derived elements (Al, Ti, and K) allow the core to be divided into six periods. The climate interpretations are compared to published regional and hemispheric climate records. The first period is Deglaciation, which spans from 17,560 -- 13,600 cal year BP (1353 - 1188 centimeters below lake floor (cmblf)). Silty sediment with low OM (average 6 %) and high DBD (average 0.832 g/cm3) are interpreted to reflect cold conditions soon after deglaciation. The Latest Pleistocene Period is the second period and spans from 13,600 -- 12,200 cal yr BP (1188 -- 1103 cmblf). Brown to light brown mud with silty layers, a slight increase in % OM (average 9 %) and decrease in DBD (average 0.694 g/cm3) characterize this interval. The Latest Pleistocene Period may have been a time of increased primary productivity in Silver Lake. The third period is the Younger Dryas, which spans from 12,200 -- 11,500 cal yr BP (1103 -- 1070 cmblf). Gray-brown to light-brown silty mud having low % OM (average 6%), high DBD (average 0.703 g/cm3), high concentrations of magnetic minerals, and elevated concentrations of Al, Ti, and K characterize this period. These sediment characteristics are interpreted as cold and dry conditions, increased terrigenous input, and/or decreased primary productivity. The fourth period is the Early Holocene which spans from 11,500 -- 7,450 cal yr BP (1070 -- 824 cmblf), and is divided into two subperiods. During the first subperiod, from 11,500 -- 10,600 cal yr BP (1070 -- 1016 cmblf), there was an increase in % OM (average 28 %) and decrease in DBD (average 0.311 g/cm3) and concentrations of Al, Ti, and K. The first subperiod of the Early Holocene is interpreted to be a period of brief warming. The second subperiod of the Early Holocene spans from 10,600 -- 7,450 cal yr BP (1016-824 cmblf), and is characterized by highly variable % OM and DBD and increased Al, Ti, and K. This subperiod is interpreted as a period of increased aridity. The fifth period is the Mid to Late Holocene which spans from 7,450 -- 200 cal yr BP (824 -- 128 cmblf). Alternating brown and dark brown mud having no visible silty layers, high % OM (average 51%), low DBD (average 0.116 g/cm3), and decreased Al, Ti, and K and magnetic concentration characterize this period. These sediment characteristics are interpreted to reflect warm and moist conditions when primary productivity increased and/or terrigenous influx decreased. However, within the Mid to Late Holocene Period there are six pronounced intervals of decreased % OM and increased Al, Ti, and K suggestive of millennial-scale increases in terrigenous input and/or decreases in lake productivity. These six intervals may be related in part to rapid global climate changes during the Holocene, when temperatures and moisture balance fluctuated. The sixth period is the Anthropogenic Period, which spans from 200 cal yr BP to the present (128 -- 0 cmblf). The Anthropogenic Period is characterized by a pronounced decrease in % OM (average 19%), increase in DBD (average 0.273 g/cm3), and an increase in the mass accumulation rate (MAR) resulting from Euro-American land clearance enhancing watershed erosion.

Book excerpt: Ocean gateways facilitate water circulation between ocean basins, and therefore directly impact thermohaline circulation and global climate. In order to better predict the effects of future climate change, it is critical to constrain past changes in ocean gateway behavior, and corresponding changes in thermohaline circulation, particularly during analogue periods for modern climate change. The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is a primary ocean gateway and vital component of the global conveyor that transports water from the Pacific Ocean into the Indian Ocean, however due to a lack of long and continuous sedimentary records from locations under its influence, changes in ITF behavior remain poorly constrained. In this study organic geochemical biomarkers preserved in marine sediments are used to reconstruct both sea surface and continental air temperatures in Northwest (NW) Australia from sediments spanning the mid-Pliocene Warm Period (mPWP), a critical carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature analogue period for modern climate change spanning 3.3-3.0 Ma. These sediments were collected during IODP Expedition 356 from Site U1463, located near the outlet of the ITF, and are therefore sensitive to changes in ITF behavior over time. Here, NW Australian air temperatures were reconstructed from 1.5-3.5 Ma using the MBT'5ME proxy (Weijers et al., 2007a; De Jonge et al., 2014a), and offshore sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were reconstructed using both the TEX86 proxy (Schouten et al., 2002; Tierney and Tingley, 2014) and the Long Chain Diol Index (LDI; Rampen et al., 2012). Global climate events, including Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 55, 63, 64, 82, 84, 88, 92, G10, G18, G20, G22, and M2 (Lisiecki and Raymo, 2005) are apparent in all of our records. TEX86 SSTs suggest a stronger cooling signal during MIS Stages G18, G20 and G22 relative to cooling during MIS M2, however LDI SSTs do not yield the same result. Overall, all three proxies indicate higher temperatures across the Pliocene and a cooling trend from ~1.7-1.5 Ma. Cooling occurs during an arid interval identified by Christensen et al. (2017), from 2.4-1.0 Ma, which suggests that offshore cooling contributed to shifts in NW Australian continental hydrology. Cooling from 3.5-1.5 Ma at Site U1463 was likely a reflection of 1) constriction of the ITF from 5-2 Ma and a switch from warm South Pacific to cool North Pacific source waters, and 2) an increase in meridional SST gradients at 1.8 Ma; the particularly strong cooling signal identified in all three records at 1.7 Ma is likely a direct response to the latter. This study helps elucidate ITF variability and shifts in thermohaline circulation across the Plio-Pleistocene and the mPWP, which will help modelers better predict the effects of future climate change.
