Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Periods of Universal History Prefatory remarks.-the fresh events just added to my Universal History are, though forcibly condensed into small compass, numerous, and full of interest and importance. Like Columbus, I have steered my bark through untraveled seas, having collected my facts mostly from newspapers and periodicals, including annals; but I have journeyed in the meantime in my own and in foreign countries, and have often enjoyed the privilege of conversing with the actors of the historic drama, or those personally acquainted with their deeds. The ability to trace great events to their true causes, cannot exist without previous familiarity with his tory; nor is this alone sufficient. And here it becomes no historian to presume on his own success, but humbly to await the award of his judges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World History The scope, character, and purpose of this textbook perhaps require some clarification here. It covers the entire historic field, together with a chapter on prehistoric times; it presents a survey of human progress, rather than a chronological outline of events; it is intended for that large body of students who, for various reasons, do not take more than one year of history in the high school. They ought to gain from such a course, however brief, some conception of social development and some realization Of man's upward march from the Stone Age until the present time. Nothing but general or universal history will give them that conception, that realization. And only a history of the world will enable them to appreciate the contributions made by peoples widely separated in space and time to what is steadily becoming the common civilization of mankind. About two thirds of the book are devoted to the last three centuries. This period furnishes the immediate historical background Of the life of to-day: it is therefore the period ordinarily most interesting and profitable to the student. The chapters dealing with it are reproduced, with some abbrevia tion, from my Modern European History. The other chapters are based on my Early European History, but they contain much that is new, both in the text and also by way of maps and illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Universal History of the United States of America: Embracing the Whole Period From the Earliest Discoveries, Down to the Present Time; In Three Parts From the settlement of Jamestown to the embarkation of the Plymouth Company. The discovery of America by Columbus, gave a new impulse to that hold spirit of adventure which characteri zed the hardy age in which he lived. Although several men of rank and fortune were concerned in the companies which had been formed in England for colonising Ameri ca, their funds appear to have been very limited, and their first efl'orts were extremely feeble. The first expedition for the southern colony consisted of one vessel of 100 to and two barks, with 105 men destined to remain m th.' country. The command of this small fleet was given 1 Captain Newport, who sailed from the Thames the of December, 1606. At the time his instructions were given, three packages, sealed with the seal of the council were delivered, one to Captain Netvport, one to Captor Bartholomew Gosnald, and the third to C a tain John Rat ohfi'e, containing the names of the counci for the colony. They were directed not to open these packages within hours after their arrival on the coast of Virginia, and the names of his majesty's council were then to be proclaim' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tabular Views of Universal History: A Series of Chronological Tables, Presenting, in Parallel Columns, a Record of the More Noteworthy Events in the History of the World From the Earliest Times Down to the Present Day It has been the intention of the editor in the several instances in which events and dates have become a matter of con troversy, to follow the authorities most generally accepted. It may easily, however, be the case that an occasional date/or statement has been retained which some scholarly reader may find ground to question; such a critic can only be referred back to the latest investigators for the authoritative decision that seems to him to be important and that it is not practicable to attempt in a condensed summary of the world's history such as is presented in the present volume. The study of history and the intelligent reading of history should be, as stated, a study of the relations of events to each other made with the view of securing as far as practicable an understanding of the causation of these events and of the influence exercised upon them by historic characters, by the leaders of men. This is the information which the publishers are undertaking to present to the public, on both sides of the Atlantic, in The Handbook of Universal History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Universal History, Designed as a d104-Book and for Private Reading IN writing this volume I have aimed to provide a text-book suited to more advanced pupils. My idea of such a work was, that it should present the essential facts of history in due order, and in conformity to the best and latest researches; that it should point out clearly the connection of events and of successive eras with one another; that through the interest awakened by the natural, unforced view gained of this unity of history, and by such illustrative incidents as the brevity of the narrative would allow to be wrought into it, the dryness of a mere summary should be, as far as possible, relieved; and that, finally, being a book intended for pupils and readers of all classes, it should be free from sectarian partiality, and should limit itself to well - established judgments and conclusions on all matters subject to party contention. Respecting one of the points just referred to, 1 can say that, in composing this work, I have myself been more than ever impressed with tlze unity of Iu'story, and affected by this great and deeply moving drama that is still advancing into a future that is hidden from view. I can not but liope that this feeling, spontaneous and vivid in my own mind, may communicate itself to the reader in his progress through these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronological Table of Universal History: Extending From the Earliest Times to the Year 1892; For the Use of Students, Teachers, and Readers It will be seen that the plan adopted in the present work has been to deal separately with the events of different countries. The events in any one year are not arranged all in chronological order, but each state is introduced independently. Several countries are, of course, grouped together in one division whenever the connection of events demands. In the history of the Middle Ages and of modern times down to the American Revolution the first place, as a rule, is accorded to the British Isles. France follows, and next in order come the countries of central Europe and Italy and Spain, after which the remaining states of Europe are introduced. The political history of the whole of the Old World is given before that of the New. From the time of the American Revolution the first place is assigned to the United States, the order otherwise remaining in the main as before. It has been deemed proper to present the history of Europe in the year 1848 in a connected sketch. Events not political are always left to the end. The names in the obituary lines are arranged in chronological order. Chronological Accuracy. A comparison of the dates in this book with those in any ordinary work of reference will reveal a great amount of discrepancy. It is little understood to what an extent encyclopedic publications contradict each other in the matter of dates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tabular Views of Universal History: A Series of Chronological Tables Presenting, in Parallel Columns, a Record of the More Noteworthy Events in the History of the World From the Earliest Times Down to 1890 This chronology of historical events, originally compiled by the late George P. Putnam and forming a part of his comprehensive cyclopedia on The World's Progress, has been carefully revised and brought down to the present time, and it is now issued in a separate form in the trust that every one who needs at his elbow a convenient manual of dates may find his requirements satisfied in this volume. To teachers especially it is hoped that it may prove an important aid in imparting instruction. They more than all others ap preciate the difficulty of permanently fixing in the mind the exact time of great occurrences, and they should accordingly value any means of lessening that difficulty. Such a means, it is thought, is found in the arrangement here adopted of placing in parallel columns on facing pages the events occurring throughout the world at about the same period of time. This calls in the powerful assistance of association in enabling the memory to grasp and retain a hold of important dates by showing at a glance simultaneous occurrences in other countries. It also helps in teaching the lesson that the history of any one nation is only a part of the history of the world and that the proper way to study true history is to follow the progress of the people scattered over the face of the globe. And not of a fragmentary few gathered into one corner of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
