Sixteen men from their Battalion have already been killed. Forty-seven others have been wounded and flown back home. The last three months have been tough and it shows. Their kit is in a bad way. They are in a bad way. Young men with tans, scruffy beards, peeling noses and lips burnt raw by the Afghan sun. Despite the hardships they are enjoying their time out here learning how to fight the Taleban. The lads are on their way to becoming the best soldiers in the Army. Last Night Another Soldier... is the story of four of the young men in this Rifle section, partly told from the point of view of eighteen-year-old squaddie, David 'Briggsy' Briggs.

Book excerpt: This is a genuine diary of a young WWI soldier who tells in vivid detail what he saw, what he did and what he felt as he fought for his country in France. The diary has a preface written in 1922 by Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice in which he maintains that books like these are a much better way to avoid future war than the glorifying histories generally available. He says "Surely our years of sacrifice were vain if the most highly educated people in Europe remain in ignorance of the real nature of war and are open scoffers at the League of Nations."

From the North, East, the South and the West; we were, America's best. Many lost their Girls and Wives to Jody; along with their Booty! He was their best friend! While we were away, Jody did play! We went to fight; for you, and the Red White and Blue. We were taught: To shoot between the eyes, that way we knew they would die! We were highly trained in Weapons of Mass Destruction and, Combat (Hand to Hand)! Bullets would scream by our heads, one Inch closer, we'd be dead. The sounds of the Big Guns would pierce our Ear Drums. Bombs and Napalm would fall from the Sky: Many men died on both sides; No matter how much, they tried to hide! Booby Traps and Land Mines were all around, on Tree Trunks, in and on the ground. Atop the Trees, Charlie would wait for us, to take his Bait. Immersed in Water; with Weapons above our heads, slowly we moved, make NO sound or we'd be dead. Our way through Villages we made: Children approached us with Grenades. Charlie would hide everywhere, of our Soldiers, they were scared! The Cong were famous for the Tunnels in the ground, in our Tunnel Rats they were Bound, Armed with only a 45, they left no none alive! The Jungles were full of Tigers and Snakes, our Lives they could take! Those 2 days in the Rear; the Women we had to fear! "5 Dollars GI, Me make You Feel Real Good"! Entice us they would! Inside them; a Razor Blade they would embed, as to make Us Dead! Our Tracers Red, their Tracers Green, in the night they could be seen! To Fight at Night, No Moon light, 'twas a Terrible Fright! Our MOTTO was: NEVER GIVE UP NOR ADMIT DEFEAT! There was No Call for Retreat! As We Charged Into Battle, We would Yell: REMEMBER THE "BLACK HORSE"! WE'LL SEE YOU IN HELL! We were the Cav, the 11th Cav. No fight did we Loose, Most Fights we did choose. A Solider Then, A Solider Now,

Book excerpt: “The 22nd is very much a part of my life and had it not been for your journal I would have had no idea of its destiny and its ending. I am very grateful to you for this experience.”—John Cheever Scores of combat incidents and fascinating insights are to be found in “A Soldier’s Journal.” Rothbart provides unusual details of the 4th Division’s, and especially the 22nd Regiment’s, achievements and obstacles in the Allied advance from Normandy to Germany; D-Day Normandy, the breakthrough at St. Lo, the liberation of Paris, the German counterattack in the Ardennes and the Battle of the Bulge, and the bloody Hurtgen Forest battle.—The Trenton Times (NJ) “Rothbart’s meticulously- kept journal is an ‘I was there’ record of World War II. It is a valuable piece of American history.”—The Huntsville Times (AL) “From the day he was drafted in 1942...Rothbart did what many people plan but rarely follow up. He kept a journal, tightly pencilled entries in little notebooks that somehow caught history roaring by, and in remarkably readable style.”—Pittsburgh Tribune Review (PA) “Compelling reading . . . made more so by the many ‘slice of life’ portraits. . . of his time in the U.S. Army.”—John Gresham, bestselling co-author (with Tom Clancy) of Submarine and Special Forces.

Book excerpt: This book was written by my father whilst recovering from tuberculosis, acquired in the jungles of Burma during World War Two. At the tender age of 16 he was awe-struck by the sight of soldiers in their uniforms and the general kudos of fighting for one's king and country. Frank becomes an NCO and is sent to the Orkneys when war breaks out. He seems to have to make the best of it, his sense of humour and lack of regard for authority, along with the luck of not being caught out, make for interesting reading. He witnesses the Battle of Britain and the Coventry blitz first hand. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and the war takes a different turn, he is sent to India on a troopship, with a stopover in Durban, South Africa. He acquires some colourful friends but finally his luck runs out and he is demoted. He confesses that at this point his love for the Army and its traditions suffers. Gandhi used the war to attempt to rid India of British rule, suggesting to the general population that they should welcome the Japanese when they arrived. Frank is sent out to control the rioting. Burma is overrun by the Japanese and the British suffer a defeat but they reform in 1944 as the 14th Army. Frank seems to recover some of his pride in being a soldier at this point. Frank crosses into Burma where he witnesses some of the most fearful fighting of the Second World War. The Japanese refuse to obey the Geneva Convention and think nothing of bayoneting the sick and dying in the hospital tents. Fighting alongside soldiers of all the Commonwealth countries, Frank realizes that they are all brothers in arms and his admiration of the Gurkha soldiers is evident. Frank lives with death every day. His descriptions of trying to avoid it are very poignant - like trying to climb inside his tin helmet in the open jungle. Frank is hit by shrapnel from an exploding bomb and whilst contemplating that he is about to leave the theater of war, a body of Japanese infantry, bayonets at the ready, led by an officer brandishing a samurai sword, appear before him but are cut down by a gunner just in front of his foxhole. Frank recovers in India and is finally sent home at the end of the war. Burma has become known as 'The Forgotten War' as the atrocities were too difficult for some to recall. The lack of food, the long marches, the extreme heat, the diseases. They certainly were a long way from home!

Book excerpt: They are all infantrymen; none were commissioned officers. One is a German-speaking artist whose sole record is nineteen stunning watercolors that cover a year's enlistment. Another is a free black from Syracuse, New York. Six are from slave states, one of whom was a Unionist. Drawing from the more than 60,000 documents housed in the privately held Gilder Lehrman Collection, Robert E. Bonner has movingly reconstructed the experiences of sixteen Civil War soldiers, using their own accounts to knit together a ground-level view of the entire conflict. The immediacy of diaries and the intimacy of letters to loved ones accompany the humor of an anonymous cartoonist from Massachusetts, the vivid paintings of Private Henry Berckhoff. All reproduced for the first time in The Soldier's Pen, the documents and images that Bonner weaves together, providing context and explanation as required, powerfully re-create the day-to-day lives of the soldiers who fought and died for Union and Confederacy. Not since the 2000 publication of Robert Sneden's paintings and papers in Eye of the Storm has a collection of original Civil War documents so evocatively captured the war.
