Book excerpt: The book presents a fascinating insight into life in Egypt in 1860. Lucie Duff Gordon was a remarkable woman suffering from tuberculosis. For a number of years, she has had to move to a warmer climate for her health, so she chooses Egypt. Those times, the relations between Egypt and the British Empire were becoming tense. And the locals were not loyal to the English tourists, making huge demands. Lucie Duff Gordon managed to become a member of the community. She surrounded herself with some wonderful people, who stayed loyal for the rest of her life, and started to learn the language. Although she wasn't particularly wealthy, she was still generous to those who needed her aid. This wonderful account of her travels and an unusual view on Egypt, its life, and culture in the middle of the Victorian era.

Book Synopsis Wine, Women and Good Hope by : June McKinnon
Download or read book Wine, Women and Good Hope written by June McKinnon and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While setting up a refreshment station in the Cape of Good Hope, Jan van Riebeeck tried his hand at making wine and brewing beer. This introduction, partnered with its trusty bedfellow, sex, set the tone for what would become a hedonistic metropolis. Wine, Women and Good Hope is a romp through this more salacious history of the Cape, looking at the antics of certain missionaries from the London Missionary Society, whose wandering eyes and love of the flesh took precedence over their moral duty to the church, and Cecil John Rhodes, whose excessive indulgence in alcohol contributed to his own demise and no doubt influenced the disgraceful behaviour of some of his contemporaries. Using her knowledge as a genealogist, June McKinnon traces the lineages of many well-known family trees to overturn the notion that those who lived in the past were nobler or had more sense than their modern descendants. Encompassing tales that are both humorous and tragic in their revelations of past misdeeds, this book will give you access to the little-known history of the Cape of Good Hope, and leave you asking the question, ‘What were my ancestors really up to?’
Book Synopsis The harem, slavery and British imperial culture by : Diane Robinson-Dunn
Download or read book The harem, slavery and British imperial culture written by Diane Robinson-Dunn and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on British efforts to suppress the traffic in female slaves destined for Egyptian harems during the late-nineteenth century. It considers this campaign in relation to gender debates in England, and examines the ways in which the assumptions and dominant imperialist discourses of these abolitionists were challenged by the newly-established Muslim communities in England, as well as by English people who converted to or were sympathetic with Islam. While previous scholars have treated antislavery activity in Egypt first and foremost as an extension of earlier efforts to abolish plantation slavery in the New World, this book considers it in terms of encounters with Islam during a period which it argues marked a new departure in Anglo-Muslim relations. This approach illuminates the role of Islam in the creation of English national identities within the global cultural system of the British Empire. This book would appeal to those with an interest in British imperial history; Islam; gender, feminism, and women’s studies; slavery and race; the formation of national identities; global processes; Orientalism; and Middle Eastern studies.
Book Synopsis From the Ruins of Empire by : Pankaj Mishra
Download or read book From the Ruins of Empire written by Pankaj Mishra and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian period, viewed in the West as a time of self-confident progress, was experienced by Asians as a catastrophe. As the British gunned down the last heirs to the Mughal Empire, burned down the Summer Palace in Beijing, or humiliated the bankrupt rulers of the Ottoman Empire, it was clear that for Asia to recover a vast intellectual effort would be required. Pankaj Mishra's fascinating, highly entertaining new book tells the story of a remarkable group of men from across the continent who met the challenge of the West. Incessantly travelling, questioning and agonising, they both hated the West and recognised that an Asian renaissance needed to be fuelled in part by engagement with the enemy. Through many setbacks and wrong turns, a powerful, contradictory and ultimately unstoppable series of ideas were created that now lie behind everything from the Chinese Communist Party to Al Qaeda, from Indian nationalism to the Muslim Brotherhood. Mishra allows the reader to see the events of two centuries anew, through the eyes of the journalists, poets, radicals and charismatics who criss-crossed Europe and Asia and created the ideas which lie behind the powerful Asian nations of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: A Lady Trader in the Transvaal presents the South African adventures of Sarah Heckford, a once famous but now forgotten Anglo-Irish gentlewoman. After treking to the Transvaal in 1878, this intrepid woman served as governess, doctor, builder, nurse, and farmer. When her farm failed, she broke through the barriers of gender and class to make her fortune as a smous or peddler —trading with the Africans and Afrikaners of the remote bush-veldt. Caught up in the Anglo-Boer War of 1879–1880, she survived the hundred-day siege of Pretoria only to find the British dishonored and herself financially ruined.
