Book excerpt: Multi-wavelength fiber lasers operating in the long-wavelength band (L-band) wavelength region are needed as laser source for applications such as wavelength-divison-multiplexed (WDM) communication systems, fiber sensors, spectroscopy and fiber optical fiber gyroscopes. Multi-wavelength fiber laser are emerging as attractive alternative technologies for wavelength-selectable WDM. They are used as source for direct compatibility with the fiber-optic transmission medium, excellent amplifying properties of rare-earth doped fibers, Brillouin gain, rapidly contiuing progress in novel fiber gain media, maturity and robustness of the laser diode pumps used and availability of fiber-based components. The multi-wavelength laser applications of interest to this work have distinct performance requirement. This requirement is the need for wide tunability (the ability to tune the lasing emissio through a wide range of wavelength). In this thesis, the design and development of a multi channel continous wave Brillouin/Erbium L-band fiber laser (BEFL), with a novel loop mirror configurations, has been studied experimentally. The design parameters of multi-wavelength fiber laser (launched pump powers , single mode optical fiber lengths and Brillouin wavelengths0, the multi wavelength Brillouin/erbium linear fiber laser configuration with bi-directional pumping is demonstrated. Throughout this work diffreent lengths of single mode optical fiber with various launched pump powers and Brillouin wavelengths have been examined to extract the optimum output performance of a BEFL. The performance of the BEFL is presented in terms of threshold pump power, output peak power, tuning range and the number od Stokes. This development fiber loop configuration exhibits considerably high performance. Twenty-four of Stokes with 10 nm tuning range and efficient output powers were obtained.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Fiber Optics deals with various nonlinear phenomena in optical fibers, including wave propagation, group-velocity dispersion, self-phase modulation, optical pulse compression, cross-phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering and Brillouin scattering, and parametric processes. The implications of various nonlinear effects on the performance of light-wave systems are emphasized throughout. This book consists of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of the fiber characteristics that are important for understanding nonlinear effects in optical fibers. A brief historical perspective of the progress in the field of fiber optics is provided. Fiber properties such as optical loss, chromatic dispersion, and birefringence are discussed. Particular attention is paid to chromatic dispersion because of its importance in the study of nonlinear effects probed by using ultrashort optical pulses. The chapters that follow focus on wave propagation in optical fibers, along with group-velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation. A chapter is devoted to pulse propagation in the region of anomalous group-velocity dispersion, with emphasis on solitons. The book concludes with a discussion of parametric processes such as harmonic generation, four-wave mixing, and parametric amplification. This book is intended for researchers already engaged in or wishing to enter the field of nonlinear fiber optics, for scientists and engineers interested in optical fiber communications, and for graduate students enrolled in courses dealing with nonlinear optics, fiber optics, or optical communications.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents experimental design and development of multiwavelength fiber laser sources utilizing hybrid erbium and Brillouin gains in dispersion compensating fiber. Four laser designs have been successfully demonstrated. Also presented is a simple method of stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold (SBS) reduction.Highly stable multiwavelength Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (MWBEFL) in which the cavity is formed by a virtual mirror, where the oscillating modes are reflected back into the laser cavity by SBS effect rather than by a physical reflector is demonstrated. The issue of low tuning range associated with such laser configurations was successfully resolved. Tuning range of 39 nm from 1527 to 1566 nm, which is only limited by the amplification bandwidth of the erbium gain was successfully achieved. At maximum pumping powers, four channels that are rigidly separated by 0.08 nm (10 GHz) and where each has power above 0 dBm has been demonstrated. Simple method of SBS threshold reduction was demonstrated. The BP signal was recycled back into the fiber thereby increasing the total gain in the fiber and thus SBS threshold was reduced. In a 5 km long fiber, the proposed method reduced SBS threshold by over 48%, from 16.5 mW to 8.5 mW of the input signal. The Brillouin Stokes generated in the 5 km fiber has a peak power of 9.2 dBm against 4.3 dBm measured using the conventional technique. Similarly, the results obtained from the various lengths of tested fibers, proved that the proposed technique significantly reduced the SBS threshold value and improved the level of the Brillouin Stokes signal power. Two structures of MWBEFL incorporating the SBS threshold reduction technique were also proposed. In one structure, unidirectional propagation of both the Brillouin Stokes and the Brillouin pump signals was allowed through the erbium amplifier while in the other, bidirectional propagation of the two signals are forced through the erbium gain. The unidirectional amplifier configuration provides greater tuning range of 46.8 nm, against 23 nm provided by the bidirectional configuration at the same pumping powers. On the other hand, the bidirectional amplifier configuration provides 13 output channels against only 6 output channels obtained from the unidirectional amplifier configuration under maximum pumping powers. The channels output power however remained lower than 0 dBm in both cases. An enhanced structure of MWBEFL that provided flawless tuning range and high channels power was also demonstrated. At maximum pumping powers, up to seven output channels that can broadly be tuned over 35 nm, are demonstrated. Wavelength tunability is also limited by the amplification bandwidth of the erbium amplifier employed. Each of the initial four channels has peak power above 1.6 dBm with the first and seventh channels having a peak power of 8.19 dBm and -8.30 dBm respectively. After an observation period of one hour, the average power fluctuations by all the seven channels is only 1.47 dB with average wavelength shifts of 0.007 nm.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-wavelength laser sources with constant wavelength spacing are of great interest in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) communication and sensors system. As the transmission capacity of optical communication systems is approaching a few Tb/s WDM method in recent years, multiwavelength generation technology becomes more important, considering that the complexity and the cost of the source will increase as the number od WDM channel increases. In this thesis, the design and development of a novel architecture of multi-wavelength Brilloui/Erbium fiber laser (BEFL) utilizing a linear cavity fiber loop technique is presented. Simultaneous and stable multiple wavelength lasing in a linear cavity have been achieved. The results are based completely on the experimental work. The requirement of internal feedback that is commonly used for multiple wavelengths Brillouin/Erbium fiber laser using a ring configuration is achieved by the proposed linear cavity design. This design used only a single 980 nm pump laser for its multiple wavelengths operation. Based on the design parameters namely: 980 nm pump power, Brillouin pump wavelength and single mode fiber (SMF) the performance of a novel BEFL is presented in terms of threshold power, Stokes signal peak power, number of Stokes generated , stability of the Stokes and tuningr range. Throughout this work, three lengths of SMF-fiber are used, 1.9 km, 8.8 km and 25 km. The optimization of Brillouin pump wavelength, power and Erbium gain led to a maximum possible number of Stokes. Twenty-two stable output laser lines with 10.88 GHz (0.088 nm) line spacing were obtained at 1558 nm that was the peak of Erbium-doped fiber (EDF). The injected Brillouin pump power into the 8.8 km SMF-fiber was set at 0.9 dBm and the EDF was pumped by 100 mW of 980 nm pump laser. The most efficient cascaded Brillouin Stokes operation occured at the peak of Erbium gain centered on 1558 nm. The number of Stokes decreased as the Brillouin pump increased in the highest region of Erbium gain. On the contratry, the number of Stokes was proportional to the intensity of the Brillouin pump power outside this wavelenght range. The best performance and conversion efficiency of Brillouin pump to the BEFL signal occur at the lower levels of injected Brillouin pump power. A low threshold of 4 mW pump power with 2.3 mW launched Brillouin pump into the 8.8 km of SMF-fiber at 1558 nm was obtained. The tuning range of the Stokes signal must be taken into account both the Brillouin and EDF pump power, at a fixed EDF pump power the Stokes signal can be tuned wider at a higher Brillouin pump power while higher EDF pump power produces smaller tuning range.

Book excerpt: Brillouin Scattering, Volume 109 in the Semiconductors and Semimetal series, marks the centenary of Leon Brillouin’s seminal 1922 paper which provided a detailed theory of the effect that now bears his name. Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is the strongest third order optical nonlinearity and plays an important role in contemporary science and applications, particularly lasers, communications, and fibre optics, as well as playing a new role in experimental physics and the life sciences. This volume provides a foundational perspective on Brillouin scattering, starting with a historical review of Brillouin scattering, the theory of SBS and the convergence between SBS and Optomechanics. We then consider SBS in several different waveguide geometries, including photonic crystal fibres, integrated optics and superfluids. Book excerpt: We consider ultra narrow-line lasers based on doubly-resonant fiber cavities, describe experimental techniques, and present two methods for passive stabilization of single-frequency fiber Brillouin lasers. In the first approach, Brillouin fiber laser is passively stabilized at the pump resonance frequency by employing the self-injection locking phenomenon. We have demonstrated that this locking phenomenon delivers a significant narrowing of the pump laser linewidth and generates the Stokes wave with linewidth of about 0.5 kHz. In the second methodology, the fiber laser is stabilized with an adaptive dynamical grating self-organized in un-pumped Er-doped optical fiber. The laser radiates a single-frequency Stokes wave with a linewidth narrower than 100 Hz. The ring resonators of both presented lasers are simultaneously resonant for the pump and the Stokes radiations. For adjusting the double resonance at any preselected pump laser wavelength, we offer a procedure that provides a good accuracy of the final resonance peak location with ordinary measurement and cutting errors. The stable regime for both Brillouin lasers is observed during some intervals, which are interrupted by short-time jumping-intervals. The lasers' stability can be improved by utilizing polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber configuration and a cavity protection system.

Book excerpt: Odyssey of Light in Nonlinear Optical Fibers: Theory and Applications presents a collection of breakthrough research portraying the odyssey of light from optical solitons to optical rogue waves in nonlinear optical fibers. The book provides a simple yet holistic view on the theoretical and application-oriented aspects of light, with a special focus on the underlying nonlinear phenomena. Exploring the very frontiers of light-wave technology, the text covers the basics of nonlinear fiberoptics and the dynamics of electromagnetic pulse propagation in nonlinear waveguides. It also highlights some of the latest advances in nonlinear optical fiber technology, discussing hidden symmetry reductions and Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur (AKNS) hierarchies for nonautonomous solitons, state-of-the-art Brillouin scattering applications, backpropagation, and the concept of eigenvalue communication—a powerful nonlinear digital signal processing technique that paves the way to overcome the current limitations of traditional communications methods in nonlinear fiber channels. Key chapters study the feasibility of the eigenvalue demodulation scheme based on digital coherent technology by throwing light on the experimental study of the noise tolerance of the demodulated eigenvalues, investigate matter wave solitons and other localized excitations pertaining to Bose–Einstein condensates in atom optics, and examine quantum field theory analogue effects occurring in binary waveguide arrays, plasmonic arrays, etc., as well as their ensuing nonlinear wave propagation. Featuring a foreword by Dr. Akira Hasegawa, the father of soliton communication systems, Odyssey of Light in Nonlinear Optical Fibers: Theory and Applications serves as a curtain raiser to usher in the photonics era. The technological innovations at the core of the book form the basis for the next generation of ultra-high speed computers and telecommunication devices.

Book excerpt: The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. The suppression was modeled using both a holmium dopant and adding a long period grating to the fiber. Both methods were shown to have a significant effect on the SRS threshold.
