Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores two distinct applications of laser spectroscopy: the study of nuclear ground state properties, and element selective radioactive ion beam production. It also presents the methods and results of an investigation into isotope shifts in the mercury isotopic chain. These Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) developments are detailed, together with an RILIS ionization scheme that allowed laser ionized ion beams of chromium, germanium, radium and tellurium to be generated at the Isotope Mass Separator On-Line (ISOLDE) facility. A combination of laser spectroscopy with decay spectroscopy and mass spectrometry unambiguously demonstrated a cessation of the extreme shape staggering first observed in the 1970s and revealed the characteristic kink at the crossing of the N=126 shell closure. A series of RILIS developments were required to facilitate this experiment, including mercury “ionization scheme” development and the coupling of the RILIS with an arc discharge ion source. Laser spectroscopy has since become a powerful tool for nuclear physics and the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS), of the ISOLDE facility at CERN, is a prime example. Highlighting important advances in this field, the thesis offers a unique and revealing resource.
Book Synopsis Investigation of Short-Lived Isotopes by Laser Spectroscopy by : Ernest W. Otten
Download or read book Investigation of Short-Lived Isotopes by Laser Spectroscopy written by Ernest W. Otten and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-01-31 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-spectroscopic methods can be applied to the systematic investigation of radioactive isotopes, covering up to 30 isotopes per element (500 nuclides in total). This book shows how the high resolution and sensitivity of laser spectroscopic methods can be used in experiments on the hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the atomic spectrum or applied to the more general problem of trace analysis. It examines the most popular methods in the field including laser spectroscopy on fast beams and resonance ionization spectroscopy, all of which have a number of variants. Techniques of production and the separation of unstable isotopes are described, along with the physics and processes of numerous laser spectroscopic methods. Also included is a summary of the results of experiments carried out on the systematics of nuclear structure in exotic regions of the nuclear chart.

Download or read book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy written by Kara Marie Lynch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work details an application of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy for the separation of short-lived isomeric states and their subsequent study with decay spectroscopy. It reports the successful construction of a novel decay spectroscopy apparatus that can operate at pressures below 1 x 10^-9 mbar. The method is demonstrated by separating the nuclear ground and isomeric states of 204Fr and performing alpha-decay spectroscopy. An equivalent mass spectrometer would require 4.6 million times as much resolution to achieve the same result. This work unambiguously confirms the existence of a second isomeric state in 204Fr. The author also demonstrates the effectiveness of this method for laser spectroscopy and identification of hyperfine-structure components with energy tagging. This method was successfully used in 202Fr to identify ground and isomeric states. The measurement of 202Fr reported in this thesis demonstrates a factor of 100 improvement in sensitivity compared to state-of-the-art fluorescence techniques. The work reported in this thesis won the author the IOP Nuclear Physics Group Early Career Prize.

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy of Neutron Deficient Gold and Platinum Isotopes written by Guy Savard and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A new method for on-line laser spectroscopy of radioactive atoms based on the resonant ionization spectroscopy of laser desorbed radioactive samples has been devised. An experimental set-up has been installed on-line at the ISOCELE mass separator in Orsay (France) and experiments have been performed on the transitional nuclei region around Z = 79. Four new isotopes $ sp{194,196,198,199}$Au have been added to the series of the isotopic shift measurements in gold and results on the neutron deficient isotopes down to $ sp{186}$Au have been obtained, confirming the nuclear ground-state shape transition from oblate to prolate between $ sp{187}$Au and $ sp{186}$Au. The first isotopic shift measurements on radioactive platinum have been obtained on $ sp{186,188,189}$Pt. Indications of a shape transition have been observed between $ sp{186}$Pt and $ sp{188}$Pt. The extracted experimental changes in mean square charge radii $ delta$ $ sp{A,A{ sp prime}}$ along isotopic chains are compared to self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus BCS calculations." --

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy of Rare Rubidium Isotopes and Development of Data Analysis Software at TRIUMF written by Olivier Shelbaya and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRIUMF, Canada's national laboratory for nuclear and particle physics has been peering into the shape and structure of highly unstable, rare isotopes. Employing the method of collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy, the nuclear ground state spin, hyperfine moments and charge radii can be determined. The laser spectroscopy group at TRIUMF has used this method to investigate the properties of rubidium isotopes, where 76-98 Rb had been previously studied at ISOLDE by Thibault et al. Laser spectroscopy was performed at TRIUMF on both the neutron deficient 74-76 Rb, providing insight into the behaviour leading up to the proton drip line. On the neutron rich end, a programme is in place to extend measurements into the highly deformed 98-100 Rb. Preliminary measurements of the spectra of the spin-0 isotope 92 Rb have been carried out, on beams with intensities of 10 7 per second, representing the first time heavy rubidiums have been produced and studied spectroscopically at TRIUMF. These measurements have been carried out in conjunction with the implementation of a new MCS based data acquisition system, greatly improving the data collection and analysis capabilities of the laser spectroscopy group." --
